The crisis in the Middle East has hit closer to home for local residents now that Altus Air Force base personnel and equipment have been deployed to the region. "I'm upset about it," military wife Linda Albright said Tuesday. Mrs. Albright is among the thousands of military dependents nationwide, whose loved ones have been or could be dispatched to the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Shield, the Pentagon's name for the mission to protect Saudi Arabia from invasion by Iraq. The Altus base's Office of Public Affairs released a statement Tuesday saying details about the operation including how many airmen and what types of equipment were not be disclosed for security reasons.

"I understand the information needs of the families of those involved and the general public. However, the safety and security of those we have dispatched to the Middle East is paramount at this time," said Col. Walter S. Hogle commander of the 443rd Military Airlift Wing at Altus. Police facing pair of charges The base operates C-5 and C-141 cargo aircraft, as well as KC-135 tankers used for in-air refueling.

The Pentagon says an unspecified number of KC-10 and KC-136 tanker aircraft, RC-13 5 reconnaissance aircraft and Airborne Warning and Control System radar planes had arrived for the Saudi operation. In addition, the aircraft carrier John P. Kennedy will leave today from its Virginia port for the Middle East, the Pentagon said. The tensions in the Middle East have put many Altus residents' nerves on edge. "I've never been in a situation quite like this before," said Mrs.

Albright, whose husband, Curt, is a field training detachment instructor. "I don't regret him being in the military. "But we don't know what to expect," she said. "It's kind of like sitting on eggshells." Another Altus resident, whose son is with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C., said she spoke to him shortly after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.

"I'm concerned about his wel- arrested, fare and other service men in that dangerous area of the world," said the 69-year-old woman, who asked to remain anonymous. "He said he's proud of his service duty and (will) do whatever he had to protect the country. "I can't say I'm fully for it and I don't want to lose him. I can't see any other way to get (Iraqi President Saddam) Hussein." Carolyn Nichols, a 23-year-old employee at KG Distributors 2, said the situation should have never escalated to its current level. "I think it should have never gotten started," she said.

"But I don't see any other way of doing it." In Lawton, Fort Sill Army Post officials said no post units have been sent to the Middle East, nor has the Department of Defense announced deployment of Fort Sill units. DONALD E. By The Associated Press WAXAHACmE, Texas A grand jury will never indict Police Chief Ted Garber of two misdemeanor charges that resulted in his arrest, City Manager Bob Sokoll predicted. "From what I have seen, I don't think he should have been arrested," Sokoll said of the charges, which stemmed from Garber's disciplinary action against an officer who taped a departmental meeting. "I don't think it should even be taken to the grand jury," Sokoll said Tuesday.

Garber was arrested by Ellis County constables at the police station Tuesday. He appeared before Justice of the Peace Maurice Lowrey, who charged him with the Class A misdemeanors. After being fingerprinted, he was released onjtwp personal recogni- bonds. The Associate'd" Press was unable to reach Garber for comment. He has an unpublished telephone number, and a police department dispatcher said he had not released any statements.

Garber was arrested on the basis of complaints of misdemeanor theft under $200 and of official oppression brought by officer Lonnie Reavis because Garber confiscated hia tape recorder, suspended him for five days and withheld hia paycheck. "I feel it's basically a reaction by a disgruntled police officer who was just given a five-day suspension last week and he's just getting even," Sokoll said. Since Garber left his job as police chief at Azle last April to become Waxahachie's police chief, six officers have filed civil rights complaints gainst him. The six complaints allege the chief has harassed. jintimi- dafiSd to roust the Wa'xahacnfe Police Officers Association and Waxahachie Police Union Local 714.
