10A Th Porl Sept. 24. 1986 9-year-old dies from cocaine HEREFORD, Texas (AP) A 9-year-old boy who had taken cocaine at least, once previously suffered a fatal heart seizure after using a small amount of the drug, a pathologist said. Manuel Saucedo suffered the seizure in a reaction to either the cocaine or to impurities in the substance with which it was mixed, said Dr. Ralph Erdmann, who performed the autopsy.

He said the child had taken the drug at least once before, but that he couldn't determine exactly how many times. The boy's 16-year-old brother found him unconscious at his home shortly after midnight Aug. 17 and took him to the hospital where he died. Erdmann said Monday that the autopsy report was delayed until results of toxicology tests were verified. Acting Coroner Johnnie Turrentine said the amount of cocaine detected normally would not be enough to cause death.

But she said an acute sensitivity to the drug warped the normal beating pattern of. Manuel's heart and caused cardiac arrest. Accidental shooting leaves infant in critical condition BOERNE, Texas (AP) A shooting involving the accidental discharge of a rifle left a 19-month-old boy in critical condition, authorities said. Boerne Police Chief Walt Myers said Tuesday that the victim, whose name was not released, was taken to a San Antonio hospital by helicopter following the accident. The infant was in critical but stable condition suffering from a single gunshot wound to his forehead, Myers said.

"As far as we have been able to determine, it was just a freak accident," he added. A woman who was house-sitting for a friend had taken her 19-month-old son, 3-year-old daughter and their 2-year-old cousin to the residence, Myers said. While the woman was cleaning the home, the children apparently found a loaded semiautomatic rifle. "It appears the gun fell over and went off, striking the 19-month-old boy in the upper forehead," said Myers. (Staff photo by Marvin Gorley) Surrogate motherhood lawsuit filed SAN ANTONIO (AP) Rookie patrolman William Biesenbach had quite a night on first shift of work with the San Antonio Police Department. He did something that most officers go years without doing, according to his superiors, Biesenbach, 20, arrested a capital murder suspect armed with a knife less than eight hours into his first night on duty early Tuesday.

"The odds of that happening are about one in 1,000," said Sgt. William Smith of the department's training division. "You could go five years and that's 190 working days a year without catching one (murder suspect)." Biesenbach is credited with the apprehension of an 18-year-old man who was sought in the slaying of a man during a robbery. "I knew right away it was him," Biesenbach said. "We had pictures of the suspect and were going door- to-door looking for him." "He just opened the door, and I made the arrest," the 19C4 Alice High School graduate said.

Biesenbach said witnesses had told police the area where the man could be found. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) Surrogate motherhood is just another term for selling babies and should be banned, according to a lawyer who represents a woman whose paid pregnancy went awry. A U.S. District Court lawsuit filed on behalf of a 25-year-old Lansing woman alleges that surrogate parenting is tantamount to slavery.

"It's been my understanding that the buying and selling of people was prohibited," said lawyer Wiley Bean, who filed the lawsuit Tuesday. The lawsuit alleges that the woman, identified only as Jane Doe, suffered physical and emo- tional harm after she was coerced into participating in a surrogate- mother program. The lawsuit names lawyer Noel Keane, a prominent proponent ol surrogate parenting and author of the 1981 book "The Surrogate Mother." Also named in the lawsuit were Keane's New York- based Infertility Center, and five doctors. The lawsuit said the woman was to be paid $10,000 to be artificially inseminated with a man's sperm so the man and his wife could have a child. The surrogate mother gave birth four months prematurely, and the baby died shortly after birth Feb.

18. Longview industrialist dies LONGVIEW, Texas (AP) Robert Cargill an East Texas industrialist who made promoting Longview one of his life's biggest goals, has died in a local hospital. He was 77. Cargill, a Longview resident since 1935, had been involved in developing and leasing oil, gas and lignite properties in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi since 1953. A memorial service was scheduled for 4 p.m.

today at Trinity Episcopal Church, preceded by a private graveside service. He was born in Jonesville in Harrison County, and had also lived in Gilmer and Marshall. He was a past president of the Longview Chamber of Commerce and was a driving force in the industrial development of the Longview area. Cargill had been a leader with the Longview Industrial Districts Inc. since its inception in 1956.

Several industrial parks resulted from the organization's efforts, and more than 200 industries located'" in the area-creating thousands of iobs for East Texans. The woman alleges that Keane and the other defendants coerced her into joining the surrogate parenting program, and that she received poor medical treatment and evaluation. Keane called the allegations "totally ludicrous." "She presented herself to my office voluntarily. She went through counseling with a psychiatrist, a medical examination and legal counseling with her own attorney," he said. The lawsuit alleges that the woman's history of five miscarriages was not taken into account when she signed a contract agreeing to be a surrogate mother.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and asks that an injunction be issued banning the practice of surrogate parenting because it is unconstitutional. The five physicians named in the lawsuit are Michael Berke, Ronald Zack, Michael Gotlib, Abraham Blumer and Philip Parker. Parker is a psychiatrist. Zack, who heads a surrogate parenting medical office that is an independent contractor to Keane's program, denied that the woman received faulty medical evaluations. "This individual has three healthy children," said Zack, adding he didn't personally treat the woman.

"There was absolutely nothing in her medical history to preclude a pregnancy." Zack said the woman sought medical care elsewhere after she became pregnant.
