for Accident Makers to Consider Well Many a car owner recently has faced a somewhat rude awakening when he has encountered a substantial increase in his property damage and personal liability insurance charges, or maybe he has been forced to shop around at some length before finding a company that would accept him as a policyholder even at premium rates. It is now an almost universal practice among automobile liability insurance companies to charge practically a necessity for every car and operator to be covered by insurance. Anyone unable to obtain adequate insurance faces a genuine dilemma. But there have been recent indications even the added restrictions of insurance companies have not sufficiently impressed teen-agers and drivers with bad records. The Iowa Safety Council has announced that unless the situation among those two groups of vulnerable a higher rate for a policy covering drivers is improved, legislative ac- a car which will be driven by a teen-ager.

Likewise, the insurance companies have adopted a policy of increasing the rate covering drivers, either adults or ers, who have previous records of accidents, regardless of where the blame should be placed. And, in not a few cases, liability companies flatly refuse to accept business on any terms from with previously bad records. The insurance companies tion will be the next step in an effort at control. The council points out that of the 643 drivers involved in fatal Iowa accidents last year, 115 were teen-agers and 216 were drivers with previous records of accidents or violations. If that worse than sad record isn't improved during the next two years the matter will be taken to the The Crow's Nest By J.

The drive is not over of course, but if the goal of $17,000 is to be reached it will require some sizable contributions. Our quota is small, when broken down to individuals, only 73 cents for every resident of the county. That is not much individually but collectively it amounts to a fairly sizable sum.

In order to create interest in the campaign the committee is attempting to develop a contest between towns, the mayor of each town being the captain. On February 14, we will probably all receive some of these funny, pretty valentines. Many of us will believe that convince you differently, I want to tell you the true meaning of Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is really the feast of a martyred saint, Saint Valentine, in fact not only one Saint Valentine but three such I til she Seniors To Fete Juniors February 10 has been set for the annual Valentine party sponsored by the seniors, in honor of the junior class. This anticipated date is due to the senior class play, "School For Girls," scheduled for February 13, 14, and 15. Games, dancing, and refreshments will provide the evening's entertainment. The ever popular box luncheon, so much enjoyed by hostesses and guests, will be an attractive A balloon dance, with a charming and startling surprise climax, has been planned for the occasion. February 14 is the date set aside by the Church to commemorate at least three saints bearing the name, Valentine. The examples of love and charity practiced to an eminent degree by each, sets the pace for all on the highway heaven. six months. Or six years. Hard.

In the first two weeks of the Eisenhower administration, some of those in Congress have taken the bit in their teeth. They have shown signs of wanting to reduce taxes right away, spend three-quarters of a million dollars investigating mistakes of the past, limit the President's power to reorganize the government and cramp his style on appointing the men he wanted to his cabinet. All this was because there was no clear program from the White House. But that period should be over now. The President's message outlined an 11-part work program that should keep the Congress busy, not on proving mistakes of the past, but on shaping new and constructive programs for the future.

The ajm is to get the country out of the mess it's in and not merely to dig deeper into the mire. Furthermore, in the President's opening paragraphs he puts it right up to the congressional leadership to work with the other leaders of his administration for joint efforts to realize his program. He wants cooperation, not opposition. One of the more amusing aspects of the message is that the President at first apologizes because he hasn't had time to prepare a program that covers everything. But then he gives Congress the business, outlining a work load that would stall an ox.

Program Will Make Headlines The President's own immediaie actions will, of course, get all the headlines. He will withdraw the U. S. fleet from the Straits of Formosa. He will allow price and wage controls to expire on April 30 He will do everything he can to balance the budget.

He will end segregation in the District of Columbia. He will recommend continuation of the federal rent control and reciprocal, trade agreements. He will strengthen civil defense a neat slap at ex-Pres- of other nice things in mind for the help to do. And here he is positively sensational. First off, in foreign policy, he tells Congress he will ask for a policy declaration "making clear that this government recognizes no kind of commitment contained in secret understandings" which permit the enslavement of any people "to purchase fancied gain for ourselves." ress.

There are some exceptions, of course, but in general that phase of the road program is on the schedule set legislature back in 1949. Today it does not need any adjustments or corrections. It should be permitted to work without tinkering. But the primary road construction program is falling behind schedule. This phase of the road i building program is losing ground Instead, each of these four little words has an important message.

Let's examine it and find what it should really mean to us. The statement is addressed to "you." That means that its message is meant for you and me, and for many other people.
