If you should happen- to need some strictly modern fighting done, by an old, reliable organization, telephone Cathedral 8411 at San Antonio and ask for the Second Division. It's prepared as is no other U.

S. military establishment to serve you. The celebrated Second is prepared because, ever since June, 1937, it has been a monster martial guinea pig for experiments in streamlined organization 1 and the evolution- of new tactical units. It has been training some troops- as heavily armed combat teams to be transported by air for surprise attacks. It has developed a new, longer range and faster reconnaissance force.

The entire division is especially strong in fire power and mobility to get there first and pour the most lead. Today it is this nation's deadliest striking force on land. Colorful History Long" before Hitler's blitzers romped over the'Jow countries, U. strategists were figuring on an arrangement which could combine" fancy footwork with hard jabs, and still unlimber a few haymakers the instant an opponent became a little boggle-ey ed. The Second Division of the Regular Army was an easy-choice for such trial training because during the earlier fracas it had traveled far into the German lines and captured more prisoners and material than any other outfit.

Incidentally, it also von more French and American decorations, and the entire personnel of the division today wears the ourra- 39c Blue gabardines, patent leathers. In an open area here at Fort Sam Houston is a dummy fuselage of a transport ship which would do credit to Hollywood's replica makers.

But this copy is for practice in loading and unloading men and equipment in a hurry. Incidentally, this correspondent has been told (though not at this post) that a -plan is cooking for a trial mobilization of large numbers perhaps all of commercial transport planes. At a secretly' prearranged time, all passenger service would be suspended, maybe for 24 hours, while the. ships gathered up troops and rushed them to some hypothetical danger point Tactical Set-op As a model for the streamlining of all 10 Regular Army divisions, the Second is called "triangular." The tactical idea, as Colonel Short explained it for a layman, is that its main components are three in though their strength was mostly just on paper, used to be scattered all over the military map of the U. S.

tfnd its world outposts. But the Army gradually has been reassembling them, -it was explained, so that they can be trained as real fighting teams. At the same time, though, the Second has been hit pretty hard by the need for crack regulars as instructors; 1000 recently were detached to teach recruits. Division Well-Equipped Even at that, this model division is better off most For example, it is- completely equipped with Garand rifles, though many civilians probably haven't realized that that many of the new rifles have been manufactured. At Fort Sam Houston, too, there seem to be plenty of the much desired 37 mm.

explosive-shell anti-tank guns, besides heavy and light .50 and .30 caliber machine weapons. Also 60 mm. and 81 mm. infantry mortars. (The former is new and very useful; one man cam pick up such a mortar and scamper through the brush.) There are light armored cars mounting three types of automatic weapons, huge fleets of trucks, four-wheeled-drive command cars, and new four -wheeled drive midgets which largely will replace motorcycles.

fancy cord looped on the left shoulder, with a dangling little gold business resembling a scepter. All such things, together with the brave history of Fort Sam Houston itself, make good listening for proud and wide-eyed selectees in barracks these nights. A few traditions seem to make quite a difference in the morale of recruits who haven't got a real war to spur their fervor. At other camps this correspondent has visited, the attitude of the selectees is one of willingness but definitely not of enthusiasm. Men Actually Want Discipline "We haven't even eased up on discipline here, because the majority of the men actually want it," said Lt.

Col James C. Short, of the division staff. "They have shown that they want to be soldiers, at least while they're here. It's encouraging that about half of the green men at Fort Sam Houston are three-year enlistments. And of the one-year men, a big share volunteered without waiting to be called." Final units of the division have Just been concentrated here, and it soon will be at full war-time strength of 15,245.
