Palm Beach Post, Wednesday, November 10, 1971 E3 World' Pro-Am Today at PGA Lewis McBride takes a break while he has a chance. With today's pro-am starting five days of activity in the 1 9th annual World Cup golf tournament, McBride and his fellow workers in the ice cream stand at the PGA National Golf Club probably won't have much lime to rest. PALM BEACH GARDENS The 19th annual World Cup pro-am is scheduled today on the PGA National Golf Club's East Course. The first foursome, which includes members from one participating team along with two amateurs, will tee off at withthefinal foursome scheduled to go off at 12: 10. The featured foursome pairs comedians Bob Hope and Jackie Gleason with the United States team of Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino.

"Yes, the black nations might object, and if they didn't play it would be a great shame. It's defeating the object of the tournament.

I'm just going to speak to the sponsors this week. "We have all the facilities in South Africa to stage such a tournament. We have over 100 championship courses in Johannesburg and it will be as good a course as they've ever played on. We have great weather. I would just like to see the tournament there." Because of South Africa's apartheid racial policies, Player has been the target of many demonstrations.

During the 1970 Masters, Player was followed by a horde of plainclothesmen. His life was threatened many times. "The idea of this tournament is to create international good will," the articulate Player said yesterday. "While the concept is very good, and with the great increase in nations, I would like to see the World Cup in South Africa in 1973. "We've got the go-ahead from our side.

Now it's And while his mission isn't totally impossible, it appears highly improbable. Player, a 14-year World Cup veteran, is attempting to get the international tournament for South Africa in 1973. Back Co ra Appearing tired after a 32-hour trip from Australia Sunday, Player was up at 8 a.m. yesterday for a prac-. tice round on the PGA National Golf Club's East Course.

By JAMES QUINLAN Post Staff Writer "It's playing extremely tough," said Player. "There's been so much rain they haven't been able to cut the grass. Everything goes dead but with some wind and sunshine it should dry out." Player, who will team with Harold Henning, won the 1965 World Cup individual trophy. South Africa also won the team title. f00 if WVA life km fessfl PALM BEACH GARDENS Cora Hoover is back.

And Jack Nicklaus' self proclaimed number one fan and sometime golf prophet wasn't doing what was expected at yesterday's practice round for the World Cup. The Augusta, housewife, who has for years followed Nicklaus in his quest for golf championships, was in the gallery of this year's number one money-winner, Lee Trevino. Did this mean a change of allegiance? Had Cora dumped Jack as she once did Byron Nelson? "Oh, that's silly, you know that isn't true and I didn't dump Byron, he retired." Cora's eyes danced under her bugeye sunglasses. "Lee is Jack's partner in the tournament and I just want to see how he's feeling," Cora smiled and pushed ahead of the small crowd for a full view of Trevino. Cora, who makes it to most of the major tournaments "just to watch Jack," showed some of her golf know-how during the PGA Tournament here last February.

She calmly predicted then that her hero would birdie three of the last nine holes he played. He did. She also predicted he would win. He did. "I'm sure of the other half of this team," she said yester-k day pointing to a Nicklaus picture in her program Trevino with his off-again-on-again grin paused before setting his ball on the 11th tee.

He took a small knife from his pocket and began to clean his nails. "See what happens when you get money," he said loudly. I used to chew these things before. "Who ever heard of a Mexican with fingernails?" Cora smiled. The crowd laughed.

"He's feeling good and since he's lost some weight he's playing better," Cora said, not bothering to watch Trevino's screaming tee shot. No more than a green later Trevino, as if by some form of telepathy, repeated Cora's judgement. "Hey, man," he called to Puerto Rico's Manuel Camacho, "I'm really feeling good." It wasn't a comment meant for spectators. Cora was satisfied. "Jack and Lee can't lose," she said.

South Africa, with Player a member of the team, has placed second twice, third four times and fourth once in team competition. In individual play, he was second in 1957 and 1963, tied for third in 1964, was fourth in 1959 and tied for fourth in 1968. "As far as the team title goes this year, I'm giving 8-1 on Trevino and Nicklaus," joked Player. "They're 1-2 on the money list and they're together and that makes one hell of a team. She said she could expect to feel some sadness on Sunday when it ends. "I just know I'm going to cry when they play the Star Spangled Banner." South Africa's Gary Player Prepares tor World Cup There's No Way We Should Lose' LEE TREVINO feels the run for the individual trophy is up for grabs. Heck. I think I even have a chance to win it." said the colorful Trevino.

"But guys like Peter Oosterhuis (England) and other long hitters are in the running." Trevino also predicts the scores over the four days will zoom. "I don't have to name the nations, but there'll be plenty of 85s." said Trevino. "This is one of the toughest courses in the world. It's long, has wind, bunkers and lots of water and with all this you don't need trees. it's going to play especially hard for some of the smaller players.

If they get in the rough, well, they might not get out by Sunday some of these players will be dead-tired from hitting nothing but woods." Trevino and Nicklaus team with comedians Bob Hope and Jackie Gleason in today's featured pro-am foursome. -DICKTREGLOWN It is considerably smaller than the ball used by players on the PGA Tour. "I'm sure Jack will use the small ball," said Trevino. "He's played with it in three straight tournaments. With that ball he'll be playing irons to the par five holes.

"Yes, I'll use the smaller ball, too," said Trevino. "I've experimented with it but if we get some more rain and they don't cut the grass here, I'll change back to the bigger ball." Trevino. who finished third in the Mexican Open last week in Mexico City played his only practice round yesterday. The 72-hole. 46-nation event begins Thursday.

The pro-am is scheduled today. "What happened?" joked Trevino of his third-place Mexican Open finish. If I knew what happened I wouldn't have finished third and I had my wife with me so I wasn't in trouble." While Trevino picks the United States to capture its 11th World Cup title, he PALM BEACH GARDENS Awesome Jack Nicklaus might be in for an unexpected pep talk any day now. And it will come from of all people Lee Trevino. "All Jack has to do is get keyed up.

If he gets pumped up and really wants to win a tournament, believe me he can," Trevino said yesterday at PGA National Golf Club. "Unless Jack putts horrible, and if I can play anyway half decent, there's no way we should lose," said Trevino, who along with Nicklaus will represent the United States in the 19th World Cup. "Jack is just so strong you won't believe how he'll hit the small ball," said Trevino. "Nicklaus carries the ball so far that using the small ball on his drive will be worth 30 more yards." Trevino, the leading money winner on the PGA tour this year with over was talking about the smaller ball which can be used in international play.
