Some know him from the movies: He's the lead rapper in his most recent movie, CB4, and he was the crack addict turned informant in New Jack City.

Television fans may recall his militant attitude as Nat on Saturday Night Live. Today, Saturday and Sunday, audiences in West Palm Beach will catch his brash, streetwise and politically sharp stand-up act at the Comedy Corner, 2000 S. Dixie Highway. Five years ago when he appeared at the club, nobody knew who he was. "Most times you go to a comedy club, you're going to see some guy that you've never seen before," Rock says.

"It's much better when they come out to see you." Ten years from now, Rock hopes to be an established producer and writer. And he wants stand-up to be in the picture as well. "I hope I'm doing it because I want to do it," he says, "and not because I have to." The world of movies, late night Chris Rock will be at the Comedy Corner this weekend. professionally, he says. He ex pects to do more.

"I would love it if they had these great movies written for me, but that doesn't happen, so I'm going to have to write more movies." CB4 grossed $18 million on a $6 million budget, he says. Chris Rock appears today, Saturday and Sunday at the Comedy Corner. Show times are 8:30 and 10:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

$36,900 SALE PRICE: mances are a long way from Rock's childhood in a middle-class home in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. The son of a teacher and a newspaper truck driver, Rock was bused to a predominantly white school, where he was faced with name-calling and racial slurs, he says. "I hated school." He dropped out at age 17, earned his high school equivalency diploma and tried community college for a year, he says. "But by then I was too warped on school," Rock says. "I was messed up, just like a kid that's been abused.

I couldn't function. I was too paranoid." He eventually turned to stand-up comedy, something he always considered, but never tried until eight years ago when he auditioned on a whim at Catch a Rising Star in New York City.
