Mike Henneman, Detroit's fourth pitcher, got the final out for his 21st save. Kevin Tapani (13-9) gave up all four runs and seven hits in seven innings, struck out nine and walked two. Yankees 5, Brewers 1 NEW YORK Rookie Sam Militello won for the third time in four major league starts as New York, behind home runs from Danny Tartabull and Bernie Williams, defeated Milwaukee. Militello (3-0) allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings, struck out four and walked three as he sent Milwaukee to its third straight loss. He won his first two starts and left with a lead in his third, but the Yankees' bullpen blew it.

This time, Greg Cadaret pitched the final two innings. Militello became the first Yankees rookie to start his career with three straight victories since Ray Fon-tenot in 1983. Rangers 6, Royals 2 ARLINGTON, Texas Kevin Reimer hit a two-run homer that traveled 444 feet, and Ruben Sierra added a solo homer as Texas beat Kansas City to stop a seven-game home losing streak. George Brett went 2-for-4, including a solo homer in the sixth, and tied Willie Keeler for 20th place on the career hit list at 2,962. Brett, who has six homers this season, homered in consecutive games for the first time since July 24-25, 1990.

White Sox 6, Blue Jays 3 CHICAGO Charlie Hough won his 201st game, and Shawn Abner hit two RBI singles as Chicago beat Toronto in a game stopped for 19 minutes because of a power outage in the sixth inning. Toronto's lead in the AL East was cut to two games over the Baltimore Orioles, who beat California 9-1. Hough (6-10), the 44-year-old knuckleballer, allowed three runs and eight hits in five-plus innings, struck out three and walked none. Roberto Hernandez pitched three innings for his fourth save. David Wells (7-8) allowed six runs and six hits in iVs innings for the Blue Jays.

The Associated Press BOSTON Dennis Eckersley blew his second save chance in 42 tries this season when he gave up Billy Hatcher's two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning, lifting the Boston Red Sox over the Oakland Athletics 5-4 Tuesday night. Eckersley (6-1) relieved Jeff Parrett with two outs and a runner on second, and intentionally walked pinch-hitter Wade Boggs. Hatcher Eckersley doubled for his third hit of the game. In the seventh inning, Hatcher hit his first home run for Boston, bringing the Red Sox within 4-3. Palm Beach Gardens' Jeff Reardon, baseball's career save leader, relieved with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning.

He got Terry Steinbach on a grounder for his 27th save in 35 chances. Orioles 9, Angels 1 BALTIMORE Rick Sutcliffe scattered four hits in eight innings as the Baltimore, aided by a triple play, beat California to stop a three-game losing streak. Mike Devereaux and Chito Martinez homered for the Orioles, who turned the third triple play in the majors this season, and the second at Camden Yards. Baltimore hit into one against Cleveland Aug. 7.

Sutcliffe had a perfect game until the fifth, when Tim Salmon reached on an error by third baseman Leo Gomez, stole second and took third on a single by Chad Curtis. Gary Gaetti hit a line drive at Gomez, who caught it inches from the ground and stepped on the base to double up Salmon. Gomez then threw to first to retire Curtis, who was running on the play. Sutcliffe (13-11), pitching just two days after his mother died following a prolonged illness, struck out four and walked one. He is 3-0 in August after an 0-5 July.

Tigers 4, Twins 3 MINNEAPOLIS Cecil Fielder hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as Detroit handed Minnesota its eighth loss in 10 games. "We're going to have that facility open for the spring season," City Manager Alex Muxo said. "Getting people sheltered and fed is the first thing. But (rebuilding) is the kind of thing that can bring a community together." The complex sustained heavy damage to the skyboxes, scoreboard, training building and roof. The Indians are moving to Homestead, one of the hardest-hit areas by Andrew, after holding spring training in Tucscon, the past 46 years.

Indians President Rick Bay said he and other team officials will travel to Homestead later this week to assess the damage. "We're going to make every effort to see them through this tragedy." Officials in Tuscon said Tuesday they will approach Indians officials about the possibility of Cleveland returning for another spring training if the Homestead facility's opening is delayed. "We definitely will be in contact with Cleveland and offer whatever assistance we can," said Craig Kimmell, president of a group in Sun City, Ariz. Despite those overtures, Bay said the Indians are concentrating their efforts on rebuilding the Homestead facility for next spring. "To be honest, we haven't looked into any alternatives," Bay said. "We've been working for the Homestead dream for so long, we're reluctant to give up on it." The Indians are scheduled to open the complex March 6 with a Grapefruit League game against the expansion Florida Marlins.

"I was trying to throw it in the corner. I was really concentrating, trying to get a complete game in because of the doubleheaders." "Juan threw a great ballgame, just outstanding," Mets manager John Tamargo said. "That's the best fastball he's had in six weeks. With all the doubleheaders, we don't want to get into our bullpen this early." The Mets scored three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Jay Davis and an RBI fielder's choice by James Harris.
