Spiders Bomb East Carolina Palm Beach Port-Times, Sunday, October 25, H70-D3 Texas Tech Tops SMU LUBBOCK, Tex. (AP) Quarterback Charles Napper hurled a 16-yard scoring pass to Johnny Odom in the closing minutes yesterday to propel Texas Tech to a 14-10 Southwest Conference football victory over Southern Methodist. Napper drilled four passes for a total of 47 yards as he took the favored Raiders on an 80-yard desperation drive into the wind. The clincher to Odom came with 3: 12 left. Odom pulled in the pass Roper Paces Missouri A field goal was kicked Friday night by Jim Sandbothe for the only points Macon got.

The Tigers lost to Brookfield High School, 19-3. East Carolina finally scored twice in the final period when fullback Billy Wallace barged in from four yards out and quarterback John Casazza threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Tim Dameron. But the Spider defense was the big gun in the 22nd annual Tobacco Bowl game. They held the Pirates to minus four yards rushing and minus three yards on returns while intercepting five passes and captur-1 ing three Buccaneer funbles. Richmond's first touchdown came after a 10-play drive that covered 54-yards, keyed by a 49-yard pass from Richards to flanker Jim Livesay.

Three plays after that bomb, Mauro broke into the end zone from three yards out. Haynes, 5-11 and 185 pounds, shook loose from defenders all day as Richards shifted to him when Livesay was covered. j'j if IS' ilL from the midst of a cluster of Mustang defenders inside the five and battled on across the goal. SMU specialist Skipper Johnson booted a 27-yard field goal into the 17 miles per hour wind in the third period, climaxing another long SMU drive.

Ciemny, a senior from Anthony, kicked field goals of 34 and 40 yards to turn a 21-17 Houston lead into a 23-21 margin for Alabama. He also had a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter.

The other Alabama scoring came on two second-quarter touchdowns one by split end David Bailey on an 18-yard pass from halfback Johnny Musso and the other on a 36-yard burst by fullback Dave Brungard. Elmo Wright, the All-America candidate at split end, scored twice for Houston on passes of 13 and 3 yards from Gary Mullins. Halfback Tommy Moziesek scored the other one on a one-yard plunge. Wright, who caught nine passes for 112 yards, was in the open on the 15 when Hig-ginbotham intercepted Mullins' underthrown pass along the sidelines and made his 80-yard dash. At that time, Houston had a fourth-and-five situation on the Alabama 35 and was trying desperately to get into field goal range.

Until the last quarter heroics by Higginbotham and Bruce Frazier blocked a Tech punt on the 15 and the ball bounced to the one, where Connaway grabbed it and stepped over the goal line. But Virginia Tech's three-touchdown explosion in the second period sealed the game as Schwabe hit for a total of 209 yards with 14 completions in 21 pass attempts along with the two scoring touchdowns Tiberio, a bruising 205-pound tailback, was Tech's leading ground gainer with 100 yards in 21 carries. Quinn, a junior wingback, was second in rushing with 79 yards and was the leading pass receiver with four catches for 63 yards. BLACKSBURG, Va. (UPI) Quarterback Gil Schwabe threw a pair of touchdown passes, one a 62-yarder to Perry Tiberio, as Virginia Tech erupted for three second-period scores to crush Buffalo yesterday, 31-14.

Schwabe's other scoring toss went eight yards to Nick Colobro and Tiberio scored the other Tech touchdown of the period with a one yard plunge. Buffalo's offense scored its only touchdown in the first period on a five yard run by wingback John Faller. However, in the second period, linebacker Dan Connaway scooped up a blocked punt at the one and stepped across for the touchdown. Mike Constantino kicked both extra points. Virginia Tech marched 61 yards for a touchdown after receiving the opening kick-off, with Quinn carrying three times for 30 yards and the touchdown in the eight-play series.

Buffalo came right back with a 60-yard drive of its own as quarterback Kirk Barton hit on three passes, good for 33 yards, before Faller scampered over from the five. (UPI) Quarterback Mike Sherwood scored one touchdown, passed for another and set up a third yesterday to lead West Virginia University to a 24-21 victory over stubborn Colorado State University in the first football meeting between the schools. The victory snapped a two-game Mountaineer losing streak, giving WVU a 5-2 season record. The loss was the sixth in a row for the Rams 1-6 Sherwood, a senior from Bellaire, Ohio, and fullback Jim Braxton provided most of the offensive fireworks for West Virginia. Braxton gained 170 yards in 19 carries. Sherwood set up West Virginia's first touchdown in the opening quarter with pin-point passing to Chris Potts and Braxton.

Eddie Williams went over from the two. In the second period, Sherwood hit end Frank Samsa with a seven-yard touchdown toss, and with 10:40 remaining in the final period Sherwood scooted over from the seven for a score.
