Vfriri Sports 'Florida's Finest: Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, Sept. 27, 1970 Dl FSU Rallies; Alabama's Tide Drowns Florida Gators Fall, 46-15 Deacons Stopped TALLAHASSEE (AP) The barefoot toe of Frank Fontes smallest man on the squad gave Florida State 13 points and a 19-14 football victory over a spunky but overpowered Wake Forest team which lead By JACK FLOWERS Ptst Sports Editor TUSCALOOSA Ala. There's no doubt why John Reaves moved from Alabama to Florida 13 years ago. The 20-year old University of Florida quarterback doesn't seem to be welcome in this state. In two years since Reaves has been at Florida his only two losses in 14 games has come at the hands of Alabams.

The latest was administered here yesterday afternoon in Denny Stadium by the University of Alabama, 46-15, knocking the Gators from the ranks of the unbeatens and give both teams identical 2-1 records for the season. A year ago, 160 miles southeast from here, Auburn University stopped Reaves and Florida, 38-12. Reaves was born in Anniston, 120 miles from here, but moved to Tampa at the age of 7. The fact Reaves is from Anniston, really had nothing to do with the demise of the Gators. Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant's Crimson Tide just outmuscled coach Doug Dickey's Floridians, cutting off the Gator's life -line the long passing of Reaves to junior All-America flanker Carlos Alvarez.

Alvarez caught only three of the 24 passes Reaves completed in 44 attempts for 37 of the 238 yards. Most of the completions were of the short yardage variety, eight going to running back Mike Rich for 69 yards. While the Alabama defense stymied Florida, junior tailback Johnny Musso of Birmingham ripped the Florida defense for 139 yards in 21 carries. The 6-foot 199 pound Musso also scored in the fourth quarter. He also caught two passes for 19 yards.

Alabama jumped off to a 10-0 first quarter lead on quarterback Neb Hayden's one yard touchdown run and a 33 yard field goal by Richard Ciemny before Rich scored on a nine yard pass from Reaves in the second period. Starting quarterback Scott Hunter put Alabama ahead at intermission, 17-7, with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Dave Brungard. After Hayden hit Griff Langston with a 10 yard scoring pass and Musso accounted for his six pointer, Florida was out of the game early in the fourth period as Alabama opened up a 31-7 advantage. Reaves attempted to rally the Gators with Leonad George capping a 59-yard drive on a one yard run. But Alabama came back to score twice more on a three yard run by Buddy Seay and a 13 yard run by third string quarterback Terry Davis to erase any doubts of the outcome.

Alabama piled up 486 yards on offense (286 on the ground and 200 in the air) compared to 279 for Florida (41 rushing and 238 passing). Fontes, 5-foot-6 and 155 pounds, kept the Seminoles in the game with four field goals from 22, 37, 39, and 47 yards out while an FSU offense led by Frank Whigham struggled to overcome a paralysis that seemed to seize it every-time it neared the end zone. Fontes, who kicks the ball barefoot and soccer style, transferred to FSU this year from Ferrum (Va.) Junior College, where he was a teammate of Georgia Tech great Rock Perdoni.

The four field goals by Fontes set a single game record for Florida State. Wake Forest surged to a 7-3 lead early in the first quarter on a 24-yard touchdown sprint by Larry Hopkins and didn't yield command of the game until 8:04 were left in the third quarter. Hefty, 222-pound fullback Paul Magalski demoted to third string after a poor performance in the Georgia Tech game redeemed himself late in the first half as he streaked 46 yards to the Deacons' six, setting up Fontes' second field goal. Running back Tom Bailey sped 36 yards on a short pass from Whigham, starting his first game at quarterback, to the Deacon two, and running back Art Mun-roe carried it in on the next play. Fontes kicked the extra point.

Wake Forest's second touchdown came on a 10-yard keeper by quarterback Larry Russell. iff 'To -1 Jackets Throttle Miami ATLANTA (UPI) Junior speedster Brent Cunningham scored three yesterday, two on passes from sophomore quarterback Eddie McA-shan tc lead the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to a 31-21 victory over the Miami Hurricanes. Cunningham, who alternated between tailback and flanker, scored on a 16-yard pass from McAshan midway through the first period, on an 18-yard pass from McAshan with 59 seconds remaining in the first half, and on a one-yard plunge over the middle with barely two minutes left in the game. McAshan, who completed 24 of 44 passes for 268 yards threw a third touchdown pass midway through the third period, a 28-yard strike to tight end Steve Foster. The Yellow Jackets, now 3-0 as they attempt to break a string of three straight losing seasons, got their other points from the toe of Jack Moore, who kicked a 20-yard field goal late in the second period and added the four conversations after the Tech touchdowns.

Miami was outplayed thoughout most of the game but managed to stick close, thanks to a 75-yard punt return by Tony Sta-warz and the passing of alternate quarterbacks David Teal and Kelly Cochrane. Stawarz' long punt return came with 52 seconds remaining in the first period and enabled the Hurricanes to go into the second period with a 7-7 tie. Dickey-' We'll Be We'll Be Better' Jack Flowers rosi opons EiUiiur TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Remorse. Sweat. Tears. Dejection.

Defeat. No laughs. It was the Florida dressing room after suffering a 46-15 defeat to Alabama here yesterday afternoon at Denny Stadium. Coach Doug Dickey and his assistant coaches, quarterback John Reaves, flanker Carlos Alvarez and other Florida players all tried to find words which would shed some light on why the Gators had been beaten after two straight The end result was the same. Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide were superior.

That was it, bluntly. No getting around it. Some thought the fact Florida was playing its first game ever on artificial grass might have been the reason. "The field had nothing to do with the game. You can't blame anything like this on the field." said Dickey.

"We'll go back with heads up and go to work Monday when we start practicing and thinking of North Carolina State. "We'll be back. We'll be better. We worked ourselves into a big game and we stunk. This is not the worst I've ever been beaten, but it comes close," said Dickey.

Dickey said Florida just didn't tackle like it should have on defense. "We had too many open field situations and you have to hit a guy like Musso (tail- Pittsburgh Clinches Tie For Crown From Post Wire Services The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched no worse than a tie for the National League Eastern Division title with a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets yesterday. "Alabama was just a lot stronger than we had expected," said Dickey. "I think Alabama is physically as strong or stronger than they have ever been since I've seen them.

"I thought we were still in the game until it got to be 24-6. We were hanging in there a little bit in the third quarter but at the end of the quarter it was evident Alabama was dominating the game at the line of scrimmage. Reaves had his thoughts, too. "I've been hit as hard before, but I haven't been hit as often. Alabama played more of a zone defense against us than we thought they would.

I think that hurt us some. "I wasn't worried at all when Alabama scored first. I knew we could come back and overtake that, but they put on a great pass rush on me. It may be one of the best pass rushes I've ever faced in college," said Reaves. Turn to ALABAMA, D4, Col.
