This might be quite valid. Take, for example a mediocre melodrama that can lay claim to one great scene. That one great scene may be enough to convince a goodly number of people that the entirety of the specific melodrama is, indeed, great.

I think the diversity of "The Twelve Chairs," though, may be more of a handicap than a psychological blessing. Children will hate it for the most part it's not really directed at children anyway. And a lot of more mature people out for a good, entertaining laugh may feel they were shortchanged. That leaves those movie-goers in a mentally alert, but potluck mood, out to pounce on anything and everything. In the right frame of mind one could go into hysterics over DeLuise opening the window of his train compartment after a long journey to Siberia and finding it solidly blocked with ice and snow, a la "Dr.

Zhivago." "The Twelve Chairs" purports to be a satire on 1920-ish greed in. Russia. In one of the title chairs, a fortune in jewels is stashed and the characters are involved in a mad romp to find them. It turns out to be more a diverse mish-mash of comedy than a specific satire. And it needs, I think, especially to be seen from the beginning.

It's rather like pot luck. Taking all the once delectable and maybe still delectable scraps out of the refrigerator and throwing them into the kettle and hoping for the best. Sometimes its humor is intense, like a drunk drummer, so much so that it's a strain both to watch and to laugh at, even though you know it's funny. Sometimes the comedy is gentle and easy and relaxed and lulling, and the watching and the laughing come softly and comfortably.

Sometimes it's low-level slapstick and, on a few rare occasions, almost classic slapstick. But that might not be any better than saying your favorite team almost won the game, as good as the game plight have been. I Sometimes the humor gets meaningful, in flashes of intelligent wit and satire. And sometimes it gets spoofy in a yvay you can read almost anything into it you want. And sometimes it's not funny at all.

What strikes me so odd is that its diversity of good humor and almost good humor, while offering something for almost every comic appetite, is hard put, I would think, to satisfy very many people all the way through. Is the same person, for instance, who finds funny the speed-up slapstick camera technique of Ron Moody, as 'the deposed Russian noble-man, chasing Dom DeLuise, las the errant priest, going to find funny Moody's feigning epilepsy at the end of the mov-Jie?
