The original Ringling brothers started their show in the late 1800s. In 1908, the Ringlings took over P.T. Barnum's Barnum Bailey Circus, then in 1919 combined the two operations, creating "the Greatest Show on Earth." Mr.

North, known as Buddy, was a Chicago native and a 1933 Yale graduate. In World War II he served in the Navy and the Office of Strategic Services, where he arranged the rescue of three antifascists imprisoned by Mussolini. He earned a Silver Star. He was 83 and lived in Begnins, near Geneva. He died after a long illness, said attorney Richard Cunningham. North and his older ran the circus from 1936 tr5967.

They eliminated many freak-show acts, adding more sophisticated acts. They also shifted performances to indoor arenas, pulling up stakes on the canvas "big top" tent for the last time in That drastically cut costs. Mr. North was especially fond oCthe circus' menagerie of giraffes, lions, tigers and elephants. ZJie found himself more suited to-irianaging than to performing.
