MYERS 747-1590 n4 meal W-ty Wf'T'i VICTORY FULNESS CHURCH MEETING AT TEMPLE BETH TIKVAH ON JOG ROAD SOUTH OF LAKE WORTH RD. RON BYRD PASTOR By SCOTT BENARDE Palm Beach Post Staff Writer SUNRISE They looked so, so right, those older-but-still-poster-handsome guys from Duran Duran as they took the stage for the first of two sold-out nights at the Sunrise Musical Theatre Thursday. And the boys who helped put the 'M' in MTV were greeted as conquering comeback heroes by 4,000 fans who never sat down. Lead vocalist Simon Le Bon was sharp in his black-and-white suit, which was covered with phrases such as "here comes the bride," "escape" and "divorce." He didn't sound quite as sharp; in fact, he sounded ragged and flat. Not a problem; he meant well and he was cool.

And 10 years after the group's early hits, he still makes the girls swoon and try to sneak up front. So does that handsome Johnny, ever-smiling bassist John Taylor (orange-red hair). Keyboardist Nick Rhodes (magenta hair) didn't disappoint his fans even though he acted so nonchalant behind his synthesizers in his gold lame suit. But sexiest of all was guitarist Warren Cuccurullo (jet black hair). Shirtless and well-defined, he played the real guitar hero.

Touring drummer Fergus Ger-rard held everything together, laying down heavy no-nonsense grooves. Backup singer Lamya Al'Mugheiry saved the band's new hit Come Undone when she took over lead vocals from Le Bon midway through the song. She added soul and grit and some serious sensuality. A trio of string players fattened up the tunes and helped bolster poor Le Bon's erratic voice. But who really cares so much about vocal precision? The band performed all its hits including Ordinary World, the song that brought the band back to the charts and a second round of stardom.

The new album is full of hits, and the band sounds so good (doesn't and the guys still look so good (don't they!) just like a sexy pop band should. This was an evening of fun and fantasy and colorful hair, not soulful music. Opening act Terence Trent D'Arby didn't sing so well either. D'Arby's also in the midst of a comeback after falling into rock 'n' roll obscurity, but his act was full of clich6s: pseudo-James Brown dance steps, the obligatory doffing of shirt, the shaking of a head full of dreadlocks and the attempt at a Smokey Robinson-style falsetto. Most of it failed (worse, he'll never wrest the Calvin Klein underwear account from Marky Mark with his scrawny body).

The fans may have gone nuts because the stars looked out of this world. But Duran Duran and D'Arby only gave us an ordinary evening. "And one day she saw us watching The Three Stooges. She took the TV out of the room because we used to sit at the dinner table," Sinbad recalled, switching to Curly's voice, 'Oh, wise and smack each other!" Townsend, who will try to revive the variety show format for Fox with Townsend Television, loved TV, too. "I grew up on TV," he said. "I'm a child of television, from the Show of Shows to Saturday Night Live, all of those things. And being a fan of Andy Griffith to I Love Lucy I grew up on Ed Sullivan." He promised his Sunday night variety show would combine elements of all his favorite old shows.

Proving Things by the Bible It may seem strange to you, but the fact is that you can "prove" anything by. the Bible. It all depends on the way you define the word "prove." Think about it for a moment-vou can "prove" anything by the laws of our land. Did not men for years justify slavery, and then later justify racial injustice by appealing to law? Do not children twist and distort words of parents and teachers, to justify their wrong behavior? The response to this unintended use of words is, "But that is not what was meant by those words." The same is true of the Bible. When the Holy Spirit of God chose the exact words (I Corinthians 2:13) used in the Bible, He arranged them in such precise way that they convey the mind of God to the heart of man The relationship between words is important, and so is the definition of them.

Words and sentences have meanings and understanding the Bible demands that we recognize this. When one ignores these facts, he can "prove anything by the Bible. Why did the Holy Spirit choose the following words? What did He mean when He said them? with Him in baptism" (Rom. "Call no man your father upon the earth (Matthew them elders in every (Acts justified by faith (James The Bible is our authority. It is important that we only prove what it proves.

It's a good role. Let's pray. He's up for a slave after this, he gets tied to a tree. Let's pray that he gets these Campbell, who said he was proud of the work ethic he learned growing up in Royal Oak, showed the TV critics how he got the very physical Brisco County role. He stood up, reached back, grabbed his shirt collar and flipped himself, landing on his back with a loud whack.

"The problem is that after I did it at the first audition, after that, they went 'You're going to do that flip thing for this next audition, Yeah, yeah, I'll do it. "The problem is I had to audition six times to get the role." Sinbad spokesman for TV? Not ashamed to reveal his middle-class roots, Sinbad could be the best spokesman for the network TV industry. He talked about the current wave of TV bashing for reasons including violence, language and sex. "I'm sorry, I can't say TV was negative," he said of his growing up. "You know how people go, 'I don't let my kids watch TV? If I hadn't watched TV, I wouldn't be here." The father of two children, Sinbad said, sure, there's some bad TV out there.

"But the good thing about being bad, you can turn it off when it's bad. You can switch channels." To hear Sinbad tell it, some I-never-watch-television bashers are overlooking a very real fact about life in this country, especially for many who can't afford much more than free network TV. "We crave entertainment in America, because, man, when you got a bad job, you're living a bad life, and you're just bored, when you watch a show, sometimes it takes you to another place." Actors TV fans as children Each of the three actors quickly! established the idea that they gfew up in a way much like the audience they hope to attract. Campbell came with a realistic and rare view of TV stardom.

"I think it's very dangerous when an actor thinks he's the only reason people are tuning (in). It aint necessarily so." When Sinbad was asked why he never has relied on blue material for his comedy routine, he was quick. "My mother would kill me. It 1 ever cursed I would get shot, and you would find my body in an alley somewhere, murdered by my mother." Townsend, who wrote, directed and starred in the feature film Hollywood Shuffle, told a funny story about growing up in Chicago. He was one of four kids raised by a single mother.
