4B THE PALM BEACH POST FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1992 msl lo Obituaries 22 graduate from Delray Citizens' Police Academy I T1 iv ft- SKI I Fk, i Curtis Summers, amusement park ride designer The Associated Press CINCINNATI Curtis Summers, who was credited with designing some of the scariest roller coasters in the world, died this week of a heart attack. He was 62. Mr. Summers started in the amusement park business in 1958, repairing and designing rides at Coney Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati. In 1972, he formed Curtis D.

Summers Inc. to specialize in designing wooden coasters. He designed more than 30 coasters at theme parks all over the country. His most recent project was Japan's first wooden roller coaster, set to open in July. He was the structural engineer for many parks, including Kings Dominion in Richmond, and Canada's Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario.

Richard Overman for spurring a new openness in the department. The approach helps improve relations between the police and the community, graduates said. It may also help prevent incidents such as Los Angeles police officers' beating of motorist Rodney King and the ensuing riots, both graduates and Overman said. "I respect the officers a lot more than I did," graduate Rosalind Murray said. "We can feel very confident that Delray Beach will never have a police chief or a police department that will wait to react to something so serious." Overman, who hopes to start a second Citizens' Police Academy class in September, said he plans to keep the doors open.

"There isn't going to be any mystique about the Delray Beach Police Department," he said. "This communication that we've begun is going to be a new day for Delray." By STEPHANIE L. JACKSON Palm Beach Post Staff Writer DELRAY BEACH They included lawyers, pastors, a teacher, a community activist and city commissioners. And Thursday night, they reported having a new understanding and respect for the job police officers do every day. The first class of the Delray Beach Police Department Citizens' Police Academy graduated at City Hall.

During a 10-week course, 22 residents learned the basics of policing. They met officers and 911 dispatchers, went on patrols, watched arrests, practiced firing guns, used a computerized shooting simulator and learned how drugs are bought and distributed. "It's been a real eye-opening experience for me," said resident Michael Castronis, adding he was impressed by the officers' professionalism. Graduates praised Police Chief v. I KJ C.J.
