"He doesn't expect special favors because he is the boss is what I mean." Sanchez reminisced about an incident that occurred while he was working in the Nixon home in New York. "I was wearing old shoes; and I was on my knees looking for a screwdriver. The boss passed and must have seen the holes in my shoes.

He told me to see him when I was finished. When I did, he took me to his closet. There, he pointed to about six or eight pairs of shoes, and said 'Pick out what you I told him I only wear those worn shoes for work. Anyway, the boss' shoes were one and one half sizes bigger than mine!" Not only is Mr. Nixon gen By TRUDE B.

FELDMAN From Ntw York Tlmti Special Ftaturts WASHINGTON Manuel Sanchez is the one person in the White House responsible for waking the President of the United States each morning. He remains outside the President's door throughout the day, and he is one of the last to see him before he retires. He describes himself as the President's "personal servant." After 12 years of working for Mr. Nixon, Sanchez combines a fierce loyalty to Nixon the President with genuine love for Nixon the man. "I would work for my boss forever," he says.

"I would even give my life for him." An ebullient, 45-year-old native of Cuba, Sanchez is "an ingenious man with a sense of humor," says presidential son-in-law Edward Cox. "He is a man who can keep the family in stitches with jokes and witty comments, but he is also a serious man dedicated to the President." "Once, I wantedto see my parents in Spain.

I had no money. But Mr. Nixon paid for my trip there from California and then back to New York. Anytime I need anything, he helps me. He says, 'Tell me what you "But most important, he treats me like a man.

I am not really his servant, but a friend. It is the first time anyone has treated me as a man in any job. That's why I like him so much and have good feelings for him." During the early days with Mr. Nixon, Sanchez recalls "I didn't speak English. Today, my English is not good, but Mr.

Nixon is always tolerant of that." On Aug. 6, 1968, Manuel Sanchez became a citizen of the United States. His witness at the swearing-in ceremony in New York was Richard Nixon. "When Mr. Nixon became President-elect," Sanchez related, "I asked him for a letter of recommendation to get another job.

He then said, 'Remember, when we moved here (New York) from California? You said you'd go any place with me. Well, all right, we're going to the White And since Mr. Nixon became President in January 1969, Sanchez has lived in the White House. Sanchez starts his day by waking the President at 7 a.m. "I just knock on the door and say, 'Get up, Mr.

He says, 'Thank "The first thing after he is dressed, I bring breakfast. Then I bring him his briefcase; and later I take coffee to his office." The President's breakfast is a simple one cold cereal, a glass of orange juice, and a small glass of milk. He eats eggs only when there is a breakfast meeting with congressmen. Each morning the President personally selects what he will wear. When he goes on trips, he tells Sanchez what to pack.

He likes to dress neatly and conservatively, matching his suits to his ties. Turning to his boss' work habits, the valet observed that Mr. Nixon works about 16-18 hours a day without stopping even when he is alone. Sanchez admires the way the President shows consideration for people, and the way he asks for things. "He never even asks for coffee without saying 'please' or 'thank He's always concerned about everyone's health and if everyone is happy or not." The President, says Sanchez, shows his best human erous, but he is often helpful with his advice, says Sanchez, such as reminding him that when he (Sanchez) has a problem, losing his temper will not solve anything.

"He says to me, 'Just sit and work it out I watch him do this and I learn from him." Asked how the President controls himself, Sanchez said, "He has wonderful self-control. He doesn't blow up. He never loses his temper. When he has a big problem, he just sits and studies it, trying to find a solution. He handles big problems with a cool head, saying little about them, working on them alone.

He doesn't run away from problems, but hits them straight on the head." But, Sanchez observed, Mr. Nixon is only human. "He gets upset with bad news, and enjoys good news. When he is upset, he works harder. I saw this when negotiations were not going well during the Vietnam war and he was very sad." Sanchez said that the President is not a man who seeks approval.

"He likes straight answers; not 'yes men' and not men 37 I CHILDREN ADULTS DELRAY BEACH PALM BEACH MALL OPEN SUN. 12:38 I 5:30 Mm PALM COAST PLAZA DOWNTOWN WEST PALM I EACH OPEN SUN. 12:30 It 5:30 We would like to who are nice to him."
