San Diego's Tony Gwynn went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI to raise his average to .372 in the Padres' 9-2 win over Pittsburgh.

Atlanta's Ron Gant was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the Braves' 4-2 win over Montreal, raising his average to .296. TOP PITCHER Terry Mulholland, Philadelphia's only healthy starter, threw a five-hit with five strikeouts to beat the Reds. The Associated Press PITTSBURGH Gary Sheffield hit a two-run double, and Craig Lefferts won his third straight decision as the San Diego Padres defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 Friday night. Tony Gwynn had four hits and Benito Santiago added three doubles as the Padres tied a team record set twice previously with seven doubles. The Padres got a break on a bizarre play in the first in which catcher Santiago failed to catch a pitch.

With Gary Redus on second and Jay Bell on first and one out, Lloyd McClendon checked his swing on a 2-0 pitch from Lefferts that eluded Santiago. Rather than chasing after the ball, Santiago put out his hand and home plate umpire Charlie Williams automatically handed him a new ball, even though McClendon apparently hadn't fouled off the pitch. Mets 4, Dodgers 1, LOS ANGELES Bill Pecota drove in three runs with his first NL triple, and Bret Saberhagen pitched five innings of three-hit ball before leaving with a finger injury as New York beat Los Angeles in the Dodgers' first home game since the civil unrest. The Dodgers' first home game since the riots began on April 29 played in front of 41,222 fans resulted in their fifth straight loss at Dodger Stadium and their 11th defeat in 13 games overall. "I wanted to show everyone I still have it," Franco said. "And so it ain't a bad start." He has recorded six saves in six chances, his 1 1 total innings blemished only by one hit and one walk. Opponents have hit only .029 against Franco.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES Catcher Darren Daulton is 30 years old and already has had six operations in six years on his left knee. "I have no cartilage underneath my kneecap, so it's bone-on-bone," Daulton says. "I'm a catcher and doing a lot of squatting and it rubs bone-on-bone and (chips) break off. You can't replace the cartilage." He got off to a slow start this season, hitting .132 after 15 games. In the next 1 7, he hit .4 1 4, with three home runs and 16 RBI.

Van Slyke hit .195 against lefties last year and has a career .218 average against them. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS The origi nal plan was that when Andres Galarraga returns from the DL, outfielder Brian Jordan would be returned to the minors, and Pedro Guerrero would return to left field from first base.

Change that. Guerrero now will serve as a backup at first and in left. Jordan has the Cardinals putting together long-term contract proposals and has won the job in left. He went into the weekend with 13 hits, including four home runs, and 13 RBI in 36 at-bats in May. "He's not going anywhere," said manager Joe Torre.

"They'd run me out of town." SAN DIEGO PADRES Outfielder Jerald Clark, whom the Padres decided to keep instead of Tom Howard. went into the weekend hitting .176, less than half Howard's .354 average in Cleveland. "This is killing me," said Clark. "I feel like a new-bom baby up there with no idea what I'm doing." SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS First baseman Will Clark went into the weekend with a 14-game hitting streak, but there's bad news. While going 18- for-54.

Clarfc saw his average drop from .347 to .342. And then there is Matt Williams, who had a 10 game hitting streak that has turned his season around. Williams raised his average from 1 70 to .233. having finally relaxed after opening the season trying to prove he couid pick up the slack for the loss of Kevin Mitchell. J3 ST.

But you can't convince the West Palm Beach Expos of that. John Kosenski and Leo Torres combined on a five-hitter and Lakeland (17-19) knocked out West Palm Beach starter Miguel Batista in the fifth inning for a 5-1 victory over the Expos (25-11) Friday.

That win combined with the Tigers' 7-4 victory in the completion of Thursday's game that was suspended by rain, amounted to a doubleheader sweep of the Expos at Municipal Stadium. "They always play well against West Palm," Expos manager Dave Jauss said. And Friday was no exception. Winning pitcher Kosenski (1-1) allowed two hits and struck out five in the first five innings of the seven-inning contest. West Palm Beach didn't score until Mike Weimerskirch singled in Rob Fitzpatrick, who doubled with two out in the seventh.

Lakeland backed up the pitching performance with an 1 1-hit attack. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first on consecutive one-out singles by Jim Givens (who beat out a bunt). Warren Sawkiw and Mike Rendina. The same three Tigers figured in a three-run fifth inning. Givens and Sawkiw singled with one out and both scored on Rendina double.

Rendina went to third on a passed ball and scored on pinch-hitter Denny McNa-mara's single All five runs and nine hits MONTREAL AB Bl BB SO Grissom cf 3 1 0 0 2 1 258 DeShields 2b 5 0 1 1 0 1 279 Aloulf 4 0 0 0 0 0 .375 Rons 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 LWalkerrf 4 0 3 1 0 0 277 Carter 3 0 0 0 1 0 259 Wallach lb 4 0 0 0 0 0 194 Barberie3b 1 0 0 0 1 I 244 Sampen 0 0 0 0 0 0 OoD BLandrum 000000' DReedlf I 0 0 0 0 I OOd Owen ss 4 0 1 0 0 0 245 Nabholzp 2 0 0 0 0 1 071 Cianfrocco 3b 2 1 1 0 0 0 250 TOTALS 33 2 4 2 4 5 ATLANTA AB Bl BB SO Avy: Nixon cf 3 2 0 i 0 40d Pendleton 3b 3 2 1 1 1 0 333 Gant It 4 0 3 2 0 0 7 Justice rf 4 0 0 0 0 2 174 Hunter lb 2 0 1110 185 Berryhill 4 0 0 0 0 I 278 Lemke2b 4 0 0 0 0 1 179 Belliard ss 3 0 0 0 0 1 198 Bielecki 0 0 0 0 0 0 154 Mercker 1 0 0 0 0 1 000 Berenguerp 1 0 0 0 0 0 0O0 a-LoSmith ph 1 0 0 0 0 0 107 Stanton 0 0 0 0 0 0 I 000 TOTALS 4 7 4 3 6 E-Campbell. "Our pitchers have been a little flat," Jauss said. "His (Batista's) change-up was up, the slider he didn't throw well. His fastball was good but if you only have one pitch that's not good enough against all those left-handed hitters." There was some unfinished business to attend to as the teams had to complete their suspended game from the previous night before they could start Friday's contest. However most of the damage was done before the rains came Thursday. Joe Perona's three-run double highlighted Lakeland's seven-run third-inning.

The Expos voted against making up one of the games on the Monday before the All-Star Game because they don't want to give up the day off. While the NBA switched a Los Angeles Clippers playoff game to Anaheim and a Los Angeles Lakers playoff game to Las Vegas, the Dodgers refused base-'" bail's suggestion of moving the Ex- pos senes to San Diego.
