With Chicago trailing 5-3, Danny Darwin (2-1) walked Steve Sax, who took third on Robin Ventura's single. Frank Thomas walked, loading the bases, and George Bell hit a run-scoring groundout. Newson singled for a 6-5 lead, took second on the throw home and scored on pinch-hitter Mike Huff's single off Tony Fossas.

Scott Radinsky (2-1) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the victory and Bobby Thigpen got twe outs for his sixth save. Boston starter Mike Gardiner allowed three runs and five hits in 5 innings. Chicago starter Greg Hibbard gave up four runs and nine hits in 5V3 innings. Orioles 6, Twins 2 BALTIMORE Ben McDonald pitched a six-hitter and Brady Anderson and Leo Gomez homered as Baltimore beat Minnesota for its seventh victory in eight games. Anderson had three hits, including a two-run homer.

Sam Horn drove in two runs for the Orioles, whose 11-2 home record is the best in the AL. McDonald (4-0) walked three and struck out five in his third complete game of the season. He didn't allow a runner past second base until Shane Mack and Kirby Puckett homered in the eighth. "I certainly didn't have my best control tonight. It was a struggle," he said.

"But when the guys go out and score runs for you like that, it makes all the difference in the world. The guys deserve all the credit for these victories." Kevin Tapani (1-4) lost his fourth straight decision, giving up five runs and eight hits in four innings. He hasn't won a game in May since 1990. "Pitching will keep you in ball-games," Baltimore manager Johnny Oates said. "That's one of the goals we had after last year.

We wanted to put people out there who can win with talent, not with mirrors." The Orioles got a run in the first when Mark McLemore reached on a force, stole second and scored on a single by Horn. It became 3-0 in the third when Horn hit a bases-loaded single and Mike Devereaux drove in Anderson with a ground-out. The Expos, who are 12-2 on the road, wLy play at Fort Myers at WP Report: Mariners' Harris may retire for a shot in NFL The Associated Press SEATTLE Seattle Mariners pitcher Gene Harris wants to retire from baseball and attempt to play in the NFL as a cornerback, his agent said Wednesday.

Mariners spokesman Dave Aust said the team has talked to Phil Tannenbaum, Harris' agent, about the pitcher's future, but had not made a decision whether to place Harris on the voluntary retired list. Harris, 27, left the Mariners in Baltimore last weekend for his stepfather's funeral in West Palm Beach. The Okeechobee High School standout was scheduled to return to the team Wednesday night, but did not show up at the Kingdome. Tannenbaum said he had told Mariners president Gary Kaseff that Harris wanted to retire frok baseball. Harris, who played defensive back at Tulane, had been scheduled to make his first start of the season Friday night against Detroit.
