ewport, kj in4. The strictly didactlo literature of problematic chess is limited Indeed. While ita merely Illustrative contingent, in the shspe of problem collections pure and simple, may ne counted almost by scores of volumes; while the number of these is constantly being augmented by the pardonable vanity of other composers eager to secure a family reunion of their mental progeny in at least seemingly ermanect form; and while the current monthly and weekly chess periodicals of the day continue to swell tha tide ot composition at ti astonishing rate cf mora than 5000 problems annually, it la not a little curious to note tiiat the didactic works, which should form tbe basis and regulate tbe development and character ot all this vast mass cf composition, may almost be numbered on the fingers of a single hand! To what cause or causes this fact Is due we do not preteud to discuss, but certain it Is that American cbessiats fiay lastly boast that, of these vol umea, the composition of an American author constitutes ioeon. testauly the lending work the Chtts Strult jry of Mr. Loyd, which one of the most eminent problem critics of our times has pronounced a masterpiece deserving to become the text book ai raa'e mec mm of proLlcmists all over the oild.

Wben, therefore, under this somewhat peculiar combination cf circumstances, it was announced tbat another Amciiean author was about to issue a supposedly similar, if somewhat briefer work, uuder the title forming the caption of this article, it is undeniable that Its appearance was awaited with considerable expectation, aud something of curiosity. Its recent arrival has gratified the letter feeling, and la eome senses met and in others diwapitomted the former. reason ot sueii disappointment aa is experienced ou its perusai is a vstsiuipie one: the wore, accurately speaking, ie not what it professed to be. and is wbat it professed not to be. in terms, upon iu title page, it ie announoed to be "a treatise on ebrs problems." and thus wa are Induced to anticipate a genuine didactic work, aud not a mere collection of problems; npon inspection we find that in tbe strict sense ot tbe term It 1a not a didactic work at all, aud that two-thirds of its mass are a mere collection of problems.

A genuine work ot instruction In the problem-art must, we eoueeive. so artistically interweave tbe theory and prsetme of tbe art tuat every principle deliceJ shall receive apt Illustration in a problem or prouiems exemplifying it, appropriately introduced and analyzed; a feature beautifully characteristic of Mr. Loyd'a great book. "Cueas-Kut Burrs," ou the otber hand, is altogether lacking in this res peel; indeed. It cannot be said to even attempt success In It, since but a single Illustrative problem is introduced in its sixty pages of lelter-press.

In reality, the woik cousists of a theoretical esssy upon problems, euibodj ing tee au-toor's viewa on composition aud solving, followed, aa we bave said above, by a misoeilaoeoua collection of lOU two-move and three-move, direct-mate prob-lems. by various compoeera. aud. in tue authnr'e words, "selected for the purpose ot illustrating ideas with the least poe-siols number of pieces, and to leach the learner ratber than delight the advanced atudent." Rut. Indeed, it is precisely from this last mentioned standpoint that the method and arrangement of the work are, we think, unfortunate, aud wo strongly apprehend that the authors intentions, as to the parties to be benefited by its perusal, are lousequeutijr rather more than apt to be reversed.

Turning aside, however, from this question or method and arraunement, and viewing Mr. Lyon's little work, not Willi regard to what It professes to be, but to what it realty Is. we find much to commend and comparatively little to disapprove (Xo os totUiAutd. That night, as Robert and now completely reconciled (except tbat he would still try to take the deg'e part), were amine np aomewhat late, we beard a couple of luulilod barks in the back garden. "You see," aaid Robert, "he mcy not be all I bad hoped from him. be may be a little conceited and orlicious; but you must admit, Fridoline, that at the worst be remaina aa admirable bouse dog!" "That's Rieary Rill's legs," sid the constable, aa he scoured them with a rope, and presently the enure burglar lay, swearing horribly, on tbe scullery floor.

"bo," said Robert directly be saw bim, "this Is oue of your odd jobs. Is it It was the man who bad sold bim Flncber.
