NAVIGATION CLASSES START Monday evening will see the start of the new classes in navigation con' ducted by the Evening Navigation School in the" Ferry Building in San Francisco.

The classes are held five, nights a week from 7 to 9 o'clock and are free to the public, beina conducted by. the department of education. The first week will -be open to registration and the course consists of a complete working knowledge of navigation required by small boat operators and tho mathematics necessary for masters, mates, pilots and aviators to pass their examination for their papers. of the officers now plying the eoast trade lanes are. graduates of the Public Navigation School.

NEW SHIPPING HANDBOOK Revision work that will result in second up-to-date edition of the Pacific Coast Shipping Handbook Is now being carried on -by executives of the General Steamship Corpora tion, according to information received today from the San Francisco office of that concern. The like the first edition, whic was published three years ago, will be elaborately illustrated with color maps, charts, photographs and concise text material containing valuable data pertaining to the Pacific Coast, and of interest especially to shipping executives in the maritime and import-export field. Maps will show in intimate detail the location of every dock and steamer facility on the Pacific Coast World-wide attention Was aroused when 10,000 copies of the first edi tion of were distributed early in 1933 and General Steamship Corporation, Ltd. was deluged with requests for copies of this handsome 63-page manual. The second edition will not only fill a need for more copies, but will bring up to date the constantly changing scene of activity in the shipping industry on the Pacific Coast.

Officials of the corporation state the work is costing $10,000, and will be ready for distribution about January 1, 1938. CONTROVERSY 19 SETTLED LOS ANGELES; Oct. Two British-owned-freighters loaded with ore and scrap iron are ready today to weigh anchor, Indicating out-of-court settlement of a $720,000 libel action brought against their operators by a Japanese shipping firm. The Kawasaki Line filed the Fed eral Court suit, charging that the Bantham Steamship Company tried to cancel charters on the ships be cause of Asiatic war conditions, A Kawasaki Line spokesman said the question of whether Japan and China are at war with each other will be settled in London. One of the freighters, the Nailsea Meadow, is scheduled to sail for South America today.

The other, the Nailsea Court, Is due to put out for Japan tomorrow. PINEAPPLE FLOOD BOSTON, Oct. wa terfront was puzzled today by sudden increase in pineapples from Hawaii, One ship, the Isthmian freighter Constance Chandler, clogged a pier with a cargo of 186, 000 case of pineapples, and Guy Rodey, representing the line's agent, said another vessel, the Golden West, had arrived in New York, en route to Boston, with another cargo of 189,000 cases.
