(IOWA) ADVANCE TUESDAY, AUGUST 18, 1959 SEEN AT THE ALGONA By T. H. C. Sometimes a picture has a certain appeal, regardless of the weakness and asininity of the plot. A case in point is The Horse Soldiers.

As a student of Civil War history, I am in no position to comment on the authenticity of Grierson's raid by Union troops deep into Confed- territory. Certainly Director John Ford must have taken some liberties with truth for the sake of making a spectacular production but this, as started out to say, is beside the point. What appealed to me is that $5.000.000.00 budget and the tremendous effects and technique employed in making this picture. I was simply fascinated by the photography in gorgeous technicolor, in the massing of troops, by the destruction of war materials at Newton's Station. The very idea of spending a cool five million dollars on a production that, at times, was unbelievably weak and improbable and at.

other times dragged unmercifully, appalled, and still fascinated me. I thought it was a most entertaining show, regardless of all these short comings. I have alwavs admired everything that William llolden has I mean everything. As an actor. I watch his work with keen interest.

John Wayne, on the other hand, has never been a favorite of mine. In The Horse Soldiers, I merely tolerated him and the fact that Holden usually had the last word and got the better of the argument, made ANNOUNCING THE CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP OF THE NEWLY REMODELED CHROME CAFE and DRIVE-IN Effective Sunday, Aug. 16, we became new owners and managers of the Chrome Cafe and Drive-in. The Horse Sold- icrs a first, class entertain- merit and its overwhelming be- auty and sympnthotic direction I made it quite a picture. I NOTE THAT Hercules 'smashing all records at a fir.st run theatre in DCS Moines; at- (ondance has boon goot at tlv local playhouse where I enjoy- fd the mythical fairv-tale story. Viewed purely as a fable of the strong man in the old story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. Hercules is a comnlotely enter- taining picture. Onlv in such eoisodes of the killin? of the lion and "the bull with barn hands, does it laose into mo- monts of uncredulity.

And the nulling down of tho palace in the final moments iniccts a lit- tie of the Samson Biblical epi- sode; this could have been o- mitted. Otherwise the Italian, techni- color picture is unusual and well done. There is nothing offensive in the Amazon sequence in the disolay of pulchitudo of the beautiful Italian actress Svlvia Koscina. Some of ther shots of Italian scenery and the? gorgeous sunsets are breathtaking in their pictorial boauty. The background of Hercules and its success is just another example of tricky aspects of the moliors.
