"He came up to me to asked me some questions about Sombo, and to be honest, it's still a new sport to me, so I went over and grabbed a guy in a Sombo uniform who was sweating. I figured he'd just got through wrestling and had some time to coach." The "guy in the Sombo uniform" turned out to be Niko-lay Baturin a 10-time Soviet national champion. Baturin took Gutscher aside for 10 minutes of personalized instruction.

With a vengeance, it appears, for one affectionately known as "The Bandit." Ordonez, a senior, was among the local favorites to qualify for last month's high school state tournament before personal problems led to his ouster from Hilltop High's lineup.

Ordonez was left watching the second-half of the season from the sideline knowing well that he should have been among those grabbing for glory. He has since learned his lesson and made amends for his transgressions. Bolstered by a fresh attitude and a new religious commitment he has returned to the mat as a champion. The erstwhile Lancer and Tro- jan mat standout has yet to be beaten in freestyle competition this spring, already having defeated one high school state meet qualifier. His big win Saturday came against Orange Glen's Paul Clou-tier 3A division champion at 160 pounds.

Ordonez also defeated Grossmont's J. Mount second at the 152-pound 2A division finals. Ordonez decisioned Cloutier, 12-0, and pinned Mount in 2:27. Rios went 3-1, including a ductch 6-5 overtime decision over Mission Viejo't Matt Smith.
