Are Free," the runaway Broadway hit just released to the nation's performing groups, will have its preview showings Tuesday through Thursday at the Hayloft Dinner Theater with the month-long run starting formally on Friday. The securing of this hit play by the producer, Les Craver, scores a bulls' eye in that it marks the first time that the play has been seen In West Texas under any management ahd is an exclusive "first." Starring in this warm, human comedy about a domineering mother, her son and his girl friend, will be the well known motion picture star remembered for her television series, "My Favorite Husband," Joan Caulfield. Hollywood actor Michael Potter will portray the son, Don Baker, who is trying to gain his independence and is blind, sup ported by Hayloft veteran Elaine Partnow as Jill and John Alton as Ralph. Peacock Directs The production is directed by James Peacock, who brought to the Hayloft stage such hits as "Star Spangled Girl," and the just closed "Any Wednesday." Joan Caulfield began her career as an actress in drama classes and performances in school productions. An enthusiastic member of Columbia drama group, she appeared in many of the plays which drew critical praise.

Friends at the university urged her to try her luck at modeling. A visit to the Harry Conover Agency and she was on her way. Soon she became a favorite with fashion magazines and color photos of her covered every national magazine frequently. Bowed In Musical A try at the Broadway stage found her cast in a small role in George Abbott's musical, "Beat the Band." Impressed, Abbott then ca'st her in the leading role as Corliss Archer in "Kiss and Tell." During her 14 month run on Broadway in this play, she began to receive offers from Hollywood. Signing, with Paramount Pictures her first picture, "Miss Susie Sh gle," made her a star.

She followed with such films as "Blue Skies," "Monsieur Beaucaire, "Dear Ruth" and "Welcome Stranger," produced by Frank RoSs. Retaining her love for the legitimate stage, she has toured in "Voice of the "Dream Girl" and She has appeared in Chicago in I -eductions of "Roar Like a Dove" and "Affairs of State." Miss Caulfield toured the nation in I960 in "Love from a Stranger," the celebrated Frank Vosper melodrama.

In 1962 She toured "Cactus Flower" in major stock theaters. In 1971 she loured "Plaza Suite" for the entire summer and fall in various dinner theaters across the country. It was the Hayloft's Jim Peacock who directed Miss Caulfield in her extensive national tour in "Plaza Suite." "Butterflies Are Free" has just closed its lengthy run on the Broadway stage which starred Gloria Swanson, and it has enjoyed high success on national tours with such stars as Myrna Loy in the mother's role. Its name is that of the construction firm that pul up the building.

The Uris' firsl show is a musical entitled "Up," which may or may not fit the "wonderful" description pinned on it by an obviously optimistic and enthusiastic press agent. Of course, everyone hopes that it is wonderful, for it would be a most unhappy event for a fine new theater to start with a failure. The Uris is described as being the first Broadway theater to be completely automated, what with an hydraulic risking; system, a switchboard that can be pre-set to light a sequence of scenes and mobile stage flooring. It is adaptable to either traditional proscenium or modern thrust usage. Largest In Town The theater, designed by veteran Ralph Alswang, is the largest legitimate playhouse in town, seating 1,900.

Producers Geore W. George, Barnard S. Straus and Nat Shapiro have signed as the star Raul Julia, currently one of two leading men in the successful "Two Gentlemen of Verona" musical at the St. James. The director is the distinguished Briton, Peter Hall, no stranger here, who will replace Sir Lawrence Olivier as director of the National Theater of England in 1973.

Composer Is Knmvn The composer for "Up" is Gait McDermott, noleil for his scores for the Ions-running "Hair" "Two Gentlemen of Verona." Lyricist and co-author of the libretto is Christopher Gore, unknown to Broadway, and Judith Ross, who has had one play produced here, shares the libretto credit. The building that has the Uris Theater also has the intimate new home of the Circle in the Square organization, the oldest and most successful of the off- Broadway operations. It also opens in tail. The second new large Broadway theater built into a new skyscraper under a relaxed building ordinance is the Astor, appropriately in the office building on the site of the historic Astor hotel in the heart of Times Square. There has been no announcement yet of iU opening date or first tenant.
