Tyfoffll Daily Heraidj Thuwdty, Dodgers Trade Baker To A's, Reds Get Parker From Pirates LouUvlllo Dumps No. Dantley, Jazz 'Bully' Blazers Page Five Lorry Holmes Won't Retire ByFREDMcMANE UPI Sports Writer NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UP!) Dusty Baker, a major contributor to three Los Angeles Dodger pennants, has been traded to the Oakland A's for two minor-league prospects. The trade was completed late Wednesday night by Dodger general manager Al Campanis and Baker's agent, Jerry Kapstein. Baker had veto power over the deal since he is a 10-and-5 player (10 years In the majors and five with the same team) and has a no-trade clause In his contract.

The names of minor- leaguers from the Oakland organization were not announced. Baker, 34, is the fourth member of the Dodger championship teams to be let go in the past three years. One of. the most popular Dodger players, Baker was bothered by injury much of last season. But he had a strong second half and finished with a .260 average and 15 home runs.

He has been the club's left fielder the past eight seasons since coming to them in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. It was also a day of activity for four of baseball's lesser lights: the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins. Seattle bolstered its offense by getting outfielder Gorman Thomas from Cleveland, Chicago Its starting pitching by obtaining Scott Sanderson from Montreal, Texas added some punch by acquiring outfielder Gary Ward from Minnesota and the Twins helped their pitching staff by picking up Mike Smithson and John Butcher from the Rangers. In another transaction, the Cincinnati Reds. who traditionally have shunned the free agent market, signed outfielder Dave Parker to a two-year, $1.4 million contract that includes additional performance bonuses.

For all Of the day's wheeling and dealing, George Stein- benner never made a soilnd. The principal owner of the New York Yankees did not fire his manager, Billy Martin, nor did he wish to discuss the situation. He will be involved in the American League owners' meeting In the morning at which Dr. Bobby Brown, the noted cardiologist and former major leaguer, is expected to be named league president. (UPI) Dave Parker, a two-time National League batting champion who played out his option with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wednesday returned home artd signed a two-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Parker, 32, who was selected by only three clubs in last month's re-entry draft, agreed to terms with the Reds after three weeks of negotiations. A native of Cincinnati, Parker will receive $700,000 a year plus incentive bonuses that could increase his pay to more than $800,000 per season. The hard-hitting right fielder admitted he received a one-year offer from the Pirates but he didn't feel the money was satisfactory. "I made a lot of friends in Pittsburgh and it was a great feeling playing for a manager like Chuck Tanner, but there comes a time in a player's career" when he should move on," said Parker at a news conference.

"Apparently from the contract the Pirates offered me, they felt it was time for me to move on, too." Pirates' general manager Harding Peterson admitted the club refused to budge from its original offer which was made after the season ended. "I've learned to try to stay on an even keel." said Peterson. "If we don't have Dave Parker, we'll have someone else. We made him an offer the week after the season was over for one year. The one year was okay but the money was not.

So we let it go." A left-handed hitter, Parker once was considered the best all-around player in baseball but has not hit over .300 since 1979. Plagued by injuries the past two seasons, Parker finally showed flashes of his old form during the second half of the 1983 season and hit .302 with 48 RBI after the All-Star Game. He finished the campaign with a .279 average, 12 homers and 69 RBI. "I think I'm still a quality player and I think I'll prove that In the coming year," Parker said. 'Tm in good shape and I'm healthy at this time of year for the first time in quite a while.

I think I'm still capable of hitting .300 with 20 to 25 home runs." In keeping with the Reds' conservative image, Parker appeared at the news conference clean-shaven and wearing a jackettmd tie with a red carnation attached to his lapel. "It's something I did on my own," said Parker, referring to the shaving off of his beard. "Coming to the Reds is like a new transfusion for me. There is no substitute for discipline and if being clean-shaven is a club policy you should abide by it." Parker won NL batting titles in 1977 (.338) and 1978 (.334) and has a lifetime batting average of .307. new commissioner at today's joint meeting, The committee is expected to recommend Peter Ueberroth, president of the Los) Angeles Olympic Organizing Commute, and James Baker, the White House chief of staff.

The Cubs, Expos and Padres got things started early Wednesday morning with a five-player deal. It began with the Padres sending reliever Gary Lucas to the Expos for Sanderson. Then the Padres turned around and sent Sanderson to the Cubs for reliever Craig Lefferts, first baseman Carmelo Martinez and third baseman Fritz Connally. Martinez and Connally were considered top Cubs prospects, but General Manager Dallas Green and Manager Jim Frey jumped at the chance of getting a quality starting pitcher. Sanderson, 27, is coming off a sub-par season in which he went 6-7 with a 4.65 ERA.

Lucas. 29, is a left-hander who went 5-8 record with a 2.87 ERA and 17 saves for the Padres. In Thomas, the Mariners have one of the AL's premier power hitters. The 33-year-old outfielder had requested a trade and he was dealt, with second baseman Jack Per- conte, for second baseman Tony Bernazard. In acquiring Ward, the Rangers surrendered pitchers Smithson and Butcher.

Ward hit 19 homers and knocked in 88 runs last season and hit 28 homers and knocked in 91 runs in 1982. In other developments, the San Francisco Giants acquired outfielder Tommy Francis as the player to be named In the trade that sent Champ Summers to the Padres for Joe Plttman two days ago; the Yankees signed free agent catcher Mike O'Berry; the Toronto Blue Jays signed shortstop Alfredo Griffin to a five-year contract, and the Twins signed Infielder John Castino to a four-year pact. White House Official Claims Baker Won't Take Commissioner's Job WASHINGTON (UPI) A White House official says he is certain chief of staff James Baker will not take the job of baseball commissioner. Baker Wednesday stood by the comment he first made Tuesday night when UPI reported he was being considered for baseball's top job, continuing to say he never comments on reported job offers.

The unidentified White House official said he was sure that even if the baseball owners might be interested in hiring Baker, the chief of staff would not accept the job. It was learned that Baker had not been directly contacted by the baseball owners and that he made the vague "no comment" because it would have been "presumptuous" in that situation to respond at all. President. Reagan said he "was as surprised as anyone to read it," referring to the story that Baker or Olympics organizer Peter Ueberroth were under consideration to replace commissioner Bowie Kuhn. Baker Is widely reported to be frustrated in his job, but Speakes said, "it goes without saying" that the president has full confidence In Baker and wants him to stay.

Asked if Baker didn't realize that by reaffirming his basic "no comment" position for so long it would be taken as an affirmative signal, White House spokesman Larry Speakes said, "1 think James Baker is an astute man with (the) press." He said he would not face Page because promoter Don King is offering him only $2.5 million.

"I know 1 have signed for a fight with Greg Page," Holmes said, with rival promoters Murad Muhammad. Charles Spaziana and his wife. Diane, at his side. "But 1 won't fight him unless they come up with more dollars." Holmes challenged Coetzee, saying he would promote the fight himself. "I'm putting out an offer to challenge Gerry Coetzee." he said.

"I'm gonna promote this fighl on my own. I'm offering Gerry Coetzee $3million plus a percentage of the closed circuit rights. "It they do it fair, they can't remove me." Holmes said of the WBC. "If they do it with trickery, they can do it. The WBC might take it upon themselves to withdraw all recognition if 1 take another fight.

But the WBC rates fighters like they want to rate them. Holmes bucked the Mexico City-based WBC when he fought unrated Marvis Frazier. son of former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, on Nov. 25. Holmes devastated Frazier in one round, but if Frazier had beaten him.

Holmes' title would have been declared vacant by the WBC. Holmes captured the title on June 9. 1978 in a decision over Ken Norton. He has defended the title 17 times and his last mandatory 'defense was against Gerry Cooney on June 11,1982.
