(AP Laserphoto) For Winter Fishing State Lakes Stocked With 50,000 Trout A second shipment of over 50,000 legal-size brook, brown and rainbow trout left Pennsylvania Fish Commission hatcheries during January for stocking in 55 lakes open during the winter trout season which started Dec. 1. Located in 39 counties, the same lakes were stocked with an equal number of trout before the season opened. The winter season, open only in lakes or ponds 10 acres or more in size, rims to midnight, Feb. 20,1978.

Each year the Commission stocks the most popular trout lakes especially for the winter fishing season although these and other ponds or lakes still contain some carry-over of stocked trout from the Commission's regular stocking program which ended last May. The daily creel limit on trout during the winter season is three fish (combined species) with a minimum size of six inches. No fishing for trout is allowed in rivers or streams, except in "Fish-For-Fun" projects which are open year around and in several other areas under special regulations. A winter steelhead (lake run rainbow trout) season is also in effect in sections of several Lake Erie tributary streams from Jan. 1 to Feb.

28 with a daily creel limit of three trout of a minimum size of nine inches. Among those lakes stocked with trout for the winter season, only three are very close to Indiana County. These are the Keystone Lake in Westmoreland County (near Elderton), Cloe Dam in Jefferson County (near Punxsutawney), and the lake at Parker Dam north of Clearfield in Clearfield County. ANGLERS SET RECORDS IN '77 Six new state records were set by Pennsylvania anglers last year. A final tabulation of 683 entries in the Pennsylvania Fish Commission's 13th annual angler awards program shows 1977 was the year the "biggest ones didn't get away" among Amur River Pike, Coho Salmon, Sheepshead, and three of the four species of trout found in Pennsylvania Brook, Brown, and Steelhead.

The new record holders are: Fred Daley, 822 George Lilly, for his 48''i-inch 24 Ib. 3 oz. Amur River Pike caught Aug. 30 in Glendale Lake, Prince Gallitzin State Park, Cambria County. The previous record was a 45-inch Amur Pike landed from the same lake in 1978.

Richard Sherback, RD 5, Latrobe, for a 31Va-inch Coho Salmon weighing 12 Ibs. caught at the mouth of Walnut Creek, Erie County on Oct. 20. The previous record was a 31-inch coho taken from Lake Erie in 1972. Gary Wehrle, 4041 S.

Shore Drive, Erie, for a 32-inch Sheepshead (freshwater drum) weighing 15 pounds, caught in Lake Erie on July 8. The previous record was a Sheepshead taken from Lake Erie in 1976. Frederick J. Rupert, Railroad Blanchard, for a 25 Brook Trout weighing 5 Ib. 11 oz.

landed from Bald Eagle Creek, Centre County on April 22. The previous record was a 23 a-inch "brookie" taken from Shermans Creek, Perry County, in 1975. Joe Humphreys, RD 1, Boalsburg, for a 34-inch Brown Trout weighing 15 Ibs. 5 oz. laken from Fishing Creek, Clinton County on Aug.

8. The previous record was a 33-inch Brown Trout landed from Lake Wallenpaupack in 1967. Scott R. Benden, 11370 Martin North East, for a 35-inch Steelhead (lake run rainbow) trout weighing 11 pounds caught in Twenty Mile Creek, Erie County on May 11. Steelhead trout were included in the Fish Commission's Award Program for the first time last year.

Of the 683 big fish entered in the awards program last year, crappie topped the list with 84 entries. Other species earning the most awards were muskellunge (71), brown trout (57). channel catfish (57). walleye (47), largemouth bass (47), carp (36), smallmouth bass (35). and bluegill (34).

SEASONS CLOSE The trapping season for skunks, opossums, raccoons, weasels, and foxes officially comes to a close with the last day of January. And the raccoon hunting season also closes out at midnight tonight. By DAVE PUTNAM Gatetle Staff Writer BROOKVILLE Finishing with a flurry of first period falls, the Punxs'y Chuck wrestlers routed up-county rival Brookville by a 49-8 score here last night. The unexpectedly easy win upped the Chucks' current unbeaten string to 22 straight dual matches and made them 8-0-1 this winter. The LaMarcamen enjoyed a 31-8 lead going into the 167-pound bout and when Cliff Thompson, Larry Reinhard and Howard Brooks all pulled off first period pins the Chucks' lead climbed to a final margin of 41 points.

Both teams had two unbeaten wrestlers going into last night's event here and all four emerged unscathed. Greg Astorino decisioned Scott Hayes, 15-2, and Brooks recorded the heavyweight pin to give both Chucks 13-0 records. Brookville's Jack Hayes nipped Matt Taladay, 4-3, and Chris Haynes pinned Jeff Miller for the Raiders' only two wins. Brookville lost a team point following Hayes' 4-3 win over Taladay because Coach Les Turner disputed a late stall point assessed against his grappler by official Wally Clark. Other Chuck winners were John Astorino at 98 by a 15-1 superior; Tom Dunkle in a forfeit at 105; Lewis Burke by a Vikettes Vanquish Riverview SPRING CHURCH The Apollo-Ridge girls raised their section record to 5-1 with a 59-47 win over Riverview Monday night.

Tracy Latham led the Vikettes with 26 points. The A-R squad now rests in a first-place tie for the section lead. Aiding Latham in the Vi- kette win was Lori Altmire, who scored 14 points, and Sue Schultz, who added 11. Diane Schiff led Riverview with 17 points. Apollo-Ridge will play at Mars Thursday.

John won 20 games and lost 7 last season when the Dodgers COURAGCOUS He was told to find some other line of work in 1974 after rupturing a ligament in his pitching arm back in 1974. But Tommy John waw't hiten- ing.

He recovered and won 20 games in 1977, leading the Dodgers to the National League pennant. The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association voted John the Most Cou- rogeous Athlete of 1977. (AP Laserphoto) won the National League pennant. John pitched the clinching victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League playoffs. In addition to John, the writers honored jockey Steve Cauthen as Outstanding Athlete of 1977; golfer Jay Sigel as Philadelphia's top amateur athlete, and baseball's Greg Luzinski and basketball star Julius Erving as the city's top professionals.

The 34-year-old John suffered a ruptured ligament in his left elbow on July 17,1974, and didn't pitch in a league game again until the 1976 season. He underwent surgery in September 1974, when doctors used a tendon from his right forearm to reconstruct the left elbow of the left-handed pitcher. Dr. Frank Jobe, who performed this first operation of its kind in history, told John the southpaw would never pitch again. "You'd better look for other things to do," Jobe had suggested.

After the elbow injury, John's left hand atrophied so badly that the ring finger and little finger had curved up, and were resting against the palm. There was little feeling in the hand. The arm was placed in a cast following surgery, and when it was removed, John moved too fast in trying to rebuild the arm elbow and had to undergo another operation to repair nerve damage. This time the cast was on for Iti weeks, and John missed the 1975 season. But after undergoing a rehabilitation program, he returned to pitch for the Dodgers in 1971), posting a 10-10 record, and being voted the Comeback of the Year Award in baseball.

He started 31 games, pitched in 207 innings, and posted the 16th best earned run average in the league 3.09. Point Park Lands Lewis PITTSBURGH (AP) Two former members of the University of Pittsburgh basketball team, Nathan "Sonny" Lewis and Terry Peavy, have enrolled at Point Park College here. "1 was very elated early today about the two enrolling in our program, but I sort of 'feel very depressed right now because we played so poorly," Point Park Coach Jerry Conboy said Monday night after his team lost 86-65 to the Pitt- Johnstown branch campus squad. The 6-foot-3 Lewis was a freshman starter last season at Pitt after earning All-State at Sche'nley High School here. Upset with lack of playing time this season under Pitt Coach Tirn Grgurich, Lewis left the Pitt squad prior to last weekend's game at Penn State.

The 6-foot-4 Peavy was dropped from the Pitt team last week for missing classes. "Terry came and talked to me the other day. He wanted to come here." said Conboy. who unsuccessfully recruited Peavy when he was a standout last season at Pittsburgh's Community College of Allegheny "This morning I got a surprise call from 'Sonny' Lewis." added Conboy. "He said he wanted to come too.

I didn't recruit either young man but we certainly think they can help our program." Pending satisfactory academic progress this spring at Point Park. Lewis and Peavy will be eligible to play next fall at that school, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Peavy will have one season of NAIA eligibility; Lewis will have two seasons. Both players would have had to sit out next season if they had transferred to an NCAA school. "Sonny has a great reputation." said Conboy.
