The Missouri reached 28.6 feet early today at Omaha, just short of the 29 foot flood stage.

Meteorologist Gary Wise with the National Weather Service said the river would crest at about 30 feet. Scattered thunderstorms strained rivers in the Great Plains and the same storm system that prompted weekend Plains floods soaked southern New England with up to 4 inches of rain Monday. Texas endured a third day of record heat. The Missouri was at its highest point in Omaha since 1952, when it reached an all-time record of 40.2 feet. Since then its highest point had been 27 feet in 1960.

Water already stood 1 to 3 feet deep in trailer courts a few miles upstream from Omaha along the banks of the Missouri, said Civil Defense Director Roy Brown of Washington County, Neb. Brown said the road leading to one trailer court along the river was completely covered by water, and at another court, water stood 1 to 3 feet deep. He said at least half the residents of the 55-unit court were staying with friends or relatives, and those remaining were getting around by boat. The flood situation in the southeast corner of South Dakota, where 100 families fled the James River as it spilled over 20,000 acres in Yankton County, was "much Improved" today, Yankton County Civil Defense Director Ted Blakey said. He said the biggest worry was the eastbound lane of South Dakota 50 going towards Sioux City, Iowa.

Blakey said the force of the flood waters washed away a pier on a 1936 bridge. The Army Corps of Engineers said the Oahe Reservoir on the Missouri at Pierre, S.D., is within 6 inches of its highest recorded level. Four Inches of rain fell on Cape Cod, Monday and early today, causing minor flooding on some roads in Hyannls. Hail the size of golfballs fell at Follett, Texas, Hettinger, N.D., and Nisland, S.D., and winds gusted to 67 mph at Taylor, N.D., during Plains storms late Monday. A third day of record hot weather in Texas saw Austin break the record for the day with a reading of 102, and Corpus Chrlsti tie its 1980 mark of 96.

It was a record 96 at Apalachicola, Fla. Hormone Replacement Differs DEAR DR. LAMB I'm a young, "old lady" older than 80 and feel great. Years ago I had the usual gall bladder and appendicitis operations and a complete hysterectomy in which all the female organs were removed. I walk at least six miles a day, ride a bicycle, bowl and' even play nine holes of golf a week.

I have a 60-year-old daughter and daughter-in- law who have had the same operations I have had. They're the sickliest, crabbiest and unhappiest women I know. They won't obey their doctors and absolutely refuse to take hormones as they should. Could you please comment on the ramifications women can suffer by not doing what they are told to do and how it affects their health now and in later years. DEAR READER I see you really care about them and want them to enjoy the good health you do.

But you need to know whether their doctors thought it was wise for them to use hormones. Each case is different, but if a young woman has her ovaries removed it usually means she should take hormones as a replacement. And now that the scare cbout cancer from using estrogen has been blunted by more recent research it would appear that in most 'cases estrogen, when there is a deficiency, or a combination estrogen and progesterone usually improve the chances of good health. Estrogen is particularly useful in helping to prevent dissolving bones that result in a humped back, loss of teeth and a high percentage of fractures after age 60. DEAR DR.

LAMB If a person has herpes, can she cook for the family without infecting them? What are the dos and don'ts? My doctor says do NOTICE! I will not be responsible for debts contracted for by any other person than myself. GaryG. Quillen 306Tanguy CARDOFTHANKS Mary Fox wishes to thank her family, friends and relatives for their prayers, cards, gifts and visits that made her 88th birthday a very special day. And thank you for the kindness given to me during my dinner at the Moose Lodge. CARDOFTHANKS I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Doctors J.

Hall, Dodt, Bowditch, and Mathews, as well as the nursing staff of Memorial Hospital OB Dept. for the care given to my wife and daughter during their recent period of hospitalization. I have witnessed a high level of professionalism as well as a genuine interest in their work. I have been reassured of Memorial Hospital's place as an above average health care facility. FRIDAY Baker's FAMILY RESTAURANT 830 E. Main St. Logpnsport AT FRIDAY the normal things, but no sex when you have an outbreak.

I want to be sure about this disease. DEAR READIER First, be sure you have herpes. From your letter you must mean genital herpes, not other forms. To spread genital herpes, live viruses present from the lesions (sores) of the infected person have to enter a break in the skin of the person who becomes infected. Friction is one way to break the skin barrier, which is why sex is such an effective way to transmit genital herpes.

Just getting the viruses on the skin will not infect a person. So, of course, you can cook and do everything any normal person would do. Avoiding sex when you have a breakout is important. DEAR DR. LAMB In a month I'm going on a two- week vacation with my girlfriend.

I 37 and she's 23. Since we don't live in the same city our sexual activity is limited to the weekends Lawrence Lamb, M.D. when she visits. During that time her sexual appetite is endless. That is great both physically and mentally for a weekend.

But I'm afraid that for a two-week period I may not be able to satisfy her as much as she would like. I'm not asking for a magic potion, which I know doesn't exist, but can I follow a certain diet, take certain vitamins or do any particular exercises that will help me get by those two weeks successfully and later on if we get married? DEAR READER If there were such a ercise program, I'm sure it would be selling faster than those books that claim you can eat all you want and stay thin forever The only time a specific diet helps improve a man's sexual performance is when he's malnourished. Good health. which includes good nutrition and fitness, is important, but beyond that you can't expect much. Perhaps your girlfriend will not be as amorous for two weeks as she is for just two days.

It sounds as if you'll need to learn to talk about what you want and don't want. That is essential to a good relationship. FIND OUT ABOITE YURIKA Free Tasting Party Every Wed, Night Across Ph.
