"He looked tired, but he was still making some tough pitches." Winter's throwing error allowed Prieto to reach third, then Alex Novo singled in Prieto for the final run. Palm Beach's best chance to win the game came in the eighth inning when Lewis led off with a double, but Hernandez got out of the inning on three straight flyouts. "I think if we would have gotten that run in the adrenalin would have carried one more inning' DiMartino said. Gero, 10 players bow out The game was not only the last American Legion game for DiMar-: tino and nine other 18-year-olds on the team, but for Gero as well.

Gero will replace Randy Gailey as baseball coach at Palm Beach. Community College next year. "Some of these kids will be playing for me, and some of them will be playing against me, too, so that's going to be a funny situa-. lion," Gero said. "But all these kids are battlers hopefully when they play for other teams they'll battle the same way." DiMartino, who signed with Indian River Community College, certainly will.

"I guess I'm just going to try and beat him," DiMartino said of Gero as he pulled the equipment bag over his shoulder and walked out of the stadium. Lewis. By CHRIS DeSTEFANO Palm Beach Post Staff Writer BASEBALL CITY It was appropriate that Sam DiMartino was carrying Palm Beach Post 12's overstuffed equipment bag up the stairwell that led to the exit of the stadium at Boardwalk and Baseball. The left-handed pitcher and designated hitter had done just about everything else for Palm Beach in the American Legion state tournament last weekend. pitching seven strong innings and not earning a decision in Friday's opening-day loss to Jacksonville and going 12-for- I 22 with eight RBI in Palm tournament games, DiMartino Beach's five DiMartino returned to the mound Monday and pitched 10 innings of shutout ball. Unfortunately for Palm Beach (40-12), Coral Park-Avanti (Miami) scored two runs off DiMartino in the Uth inning and eliminated the defending state champions 2-0.

Sarasota Post 30 beat Avanti 6-4 late Monday to win the state title. "You can't get four hits in 11 innings in a tournament like this and expect to win," DiMartino said as he slowly walked down the tunnel after the game. The four hits were Palm Beach's lowest output in the tournament. In its last four tournament games, Post 12 had at least four hits in one inning each game. DiMartino himself had four hits in Saturday's 14-7 win over Mulberry.

Tough pitching Alex Hernandez and Terry McGrady of Avanti (24-12) changed all that. Hernandez, who allowed four hits, walked one, struck out MONTREAL CHICAGO ab ab Da. How-en, Los Angeles, 24; Burke, Montreal, 23. Tigers send down Pena, activate Hernandez DETROIT The Detroit Tigers activated relief pitcher Guil-lermo Hernandez from the disabled list, the club announced. To make room on the roster for Hernandez, the Tigers sent pitcher Ramon Pena to their Triple A farm team in Toledo, Ohio. Hernandez had been sidelined since July 13 with tendinitis in his left elbow. In 28 games this season, he is 2-2 with a 6.15 ERA and 12 saves.

In his last appearance, Hernandez allowed a game-winning grand slam to Toronto's Pat Borders. Pena was 0-0 with no saves and a 6.00 ERA in eight games for Detroit. Toronto puts Key on disabled list TORONTO Toronto lefthander Jimmy Key, who has lost seven straight decisions, has swelling around his rotator cuff and was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 4, the Blue Jays announced. "It's gotten worse and worse," Key said.

"After my last start, my shoulder had some soreness. "For me, it's a time to back off and try to get back into top form for the stretch run in September. I'll miss two starts and that should be enough time." He is being replaced in the rotation by Mauro (Goose) Gozzo, a 23-year-old right-hander taken from the Kansas City Royals' organization in the minor-league draft last winter. Gozzo will start in place of Key tonight against the Texas Rangers. Gozzo was 7-0 with a 2.98 ERA at Class AA Knoxville before being promoted to Gass AAA Syracuse, where he compiled a 5-1 record and 2.76 ERA.

Brewers 5, Tigers 2 Vero Beach avenges 13-0 loss with 18-1 victory over Mets two and got 18 of the 27 outs on fly balls, pitched nine innings before being relieved by McGrady at the start of the 10th. (American Legion tournament rules don't permit a pitcher to throw more than 12 innings in a 72-hour period, and Hernandez pitched three shutout innings Saturday.) McGrady (9-1) used a sharp breaking ball in his two innings and struck out five. DiMartino (9-3) allowed Avanti seven hits in the first seven innings, but escaped trouble by great defensive plays (right fielder Shawn Hardin saved a run in the second on a sliding catch, catcher Kevin Lewis threw out a runner attempting to steal second in the seventh and third baseman Danon Winter made a diving catch of an attempted sacrifice 30 feet in front of the plate), two double plays or poor base running by Avanti (one runner overran second base and another was picked off first by DiMartino). "We left too many people on base," said Avanti third baseman Anthony Prieto.

"Plus they made some good plays to get out of it." Leadoff walk costly But after threatening so many innings, Avanti finally scored in the 11th when DiMartino walked lead-off batter Luis Hernandez and Prieto followed with a double. "The coach called me over and said to hit and run, so I just tried to hit it to the opposite side of the field," Prieto said of his double, which went down the first-base line and came to rest under the bullpen benches. "We kept making mistakes and missing signs," said Avanti manager Carlos Hernandez. "But I knew it was just a matter of time (before we scored)." The walk to Hernandez was the Florida State League driguez and left fielder Bruce Dos-tal had two-run singles and right fielder Tony Barron had a run-scoring double. St.

Lucie's only run came in the eighth when Radhames Polanco tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Valdes was 3-for-4 with his fifth home run and two RBI. Dostal was 3-for-5 with four RBI and Lewis was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Winning pitcher John Knapp (6-9) pitched six shutout innings, striking out four and giving up two hits while walking three, one intentionally. The Mets play at Miami tonight and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

St. Lucie's next home game is at 7 p.m. Thursday against Fort Lauderdale. West Palm Beach 4, Dunedin 2 DUNEDIN Bryn Kosco went l-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Expos (21-23) over the Blue Jays (22-21) Monday night in a Florida State League game at Grant Field. Doug Kline (9-4) was the winning pitcher for the Expos, Scott Henion came in in relief in the eighth inning and earned his 12th save of the season. intent on finding the fans who had heckled him. "Apparently there were punches thrown and-an usher was hit," said George Taylor, head of stadium security. The fans got on Sanders in the second inning when he slammed down his batting helmet after taking a called third strike. The booing persisted every time Sanders came to the plate.

He was 0-for-4 in the game. Moore said he often waits to see to work. "All the clubs are located in one state, you can get to them in a matter of hours, and you're not competing against the major or minor leagues. It's like senior golf, or masters tennis.
