4E THE PALM BEACH POST MONDAY, AUGUST 7, 1989 News crew delivers last broadcast I' 1 "When you have ABC, NBC and CBS dumping huge audiences into affiliate news shows, for a little old independent to try to compete is very difficult. But at 10, you're an alternative." Fonger, 38, is talking to several other stations in the area and is eager to put this chapter of his professional life on the shelf. "We're like ghosts now. The sad thing is that this community is losing a great sense of its identity. Now there's no local news department.

You may not have liked what we did, but at least we were there." The public's reaction was heartening; a wailful of letters, lots of phone calls, even some flowers the day before closing. "Actually," Fonger said, "it's been better than I thought it would be. All the people at WTVX worked till 11:30 p.m. on Friday to put out a newscast." He'd like to stay and talk, but there's really no time. The station has informed the ex-employees that as soon as the 11 o'clock broadcast is over, and they have a brief meeting with the local press, they all have to be out, gone.

Effects, tapes, family pictures, everything. Fonger looks around and sighs. "They just don't want us around, I guess." get them over the air south of Boynton Beach." WTVX was a rarity, a UHF network affiliate. Its service area was part of St. Lucie County, all of Martin County and the northern part of Palm Beach County.

It was traditionally a modest operation because a UHF station, before cable, didn't have that large an audience. No matter how modest, however, an affiliation with CBS mandated a news operation. 'Writing on the wall' But, on Jan. 1 of this year, they lost that affiliation, as CBS allied with WPEC-Channel 12, which had been ABC, and ABC went to WPBF-Channel 25. The loss of CBS virtually guaranteed the abandonment of news.

"In all honesty, I didn't see the writing on the wall," said Fonger, who had worked at WTVX for 3 years. "I thought we could be a viable news operation and provide a quality newscast. "However, when we canceled the 10 o'clock report and not the 11 o'clock report, that's when I allowed my contract to expire. The station couldn't be viable if it pretended to be a network affiliate but wasn't, and went head to head with a network affiliate. "There's no hope, nothing to work toward," said one Channel 34 news employee.

"But there's also a sort of camaraderie. This happened to all of us together. Our ratings were still decent. The prime time ratings may have dropped, but the newscast was holding on." Since the affiliate switch, Channel 34 has been offering low-rent, prime-time movies such as Terminators in the Year 3000 instead of the CBS lineup, and ratings have reflected it. In the May Nielsen ratings period, Channel 34 finished third with 20,000 households, behind Channel 12 with 45,000 households.

New ABC affiliate WPBF-Channel 25 was fourth with 5,000 households. Competition tough Channel 34 will now be competing with independent stations that already have their marketing and public identities down pat. Viewers also have been lost during the daytime, as they look elsewhere for their favorite soaps or quiz shows. Closing the news operation may help the cash flow, but 34's long-term future is still clouded. "They're the second independent in the 50th market, and they're not even covering the entire market," Green said.

"It's impossible to WTVXfrom IE With the shuttering of the Channel 34 news operation, the only independent in the South Florida to offer news is Miami-based WSVN-Channel 7, which had a very strong news operation before it also was divested of its network affiliation at the beginning of this year. "But you can't overlook the fact," said Murray Green, station manager at independent WFLX-Channel 29, "that they're in a larger market, the 16th vs. the 50th." Among market professionals, the Channel 34 news operation was regarded as decent, comparable 1 allowing for the size of the market to that of Miami's WCIX-Chan-nel6. As might be expected, the I WTVX news operation has been a somewhat gloomy environment, complicated by the difficult mix of the news operation (a body of peo-', pie soon to be without jobs) and the of the station (a body of people with jobs.) gloomy atmosphere Being on a sinking professional ship is a disconcerting, emotional-'. ly wearing experience, like staring an open grave for what seems like forever.

There is considerable grumbling about the knee-length green socks with a red band around the top that the Scouts are supposed to wear with shorts. A quartet of Texas Scouts defiantly pulled theirs down around their ankles.

"We're older Scouts. We don't pull up our socks," 15-year-old Mike Mulvaney of Austin said. "We're too cool for that." The laser and fireworks show that opened the jamboree on Wednesday night had delighted even the most jaded Scouts, however. "It was great," recalled Gary Banfield, 15, of West Palm Beach. Film producer and director Steven Spielberg, a former Eagle Scout, greeted the campers.

"You're the best. You're the Scouts. We're brothers," he told them. Spielberg credited his scouting experiences with giving him the RICK McKAYPalm Beach Post Washington Bureau confidence and courage to embark on a career in motion pictures. He also announced the creation of a new merit badge in cinematography.

Spread out for miles under the hot August sun, the jamboree was an anthill of activity, with boys wandering everywhere for fun. Some rode trail bikes over an obstacle course. Others shot BB guns or bows and arrows. Others toured a giant space exhibit set up by NASA. Aaron Banfield of West Palm Beach ran through a confidence course.

"Really cool," he said. They worked on merit badges. They rode a bucking barrel. They threw tomahawks, built towers, sweated, smiled and swam. And they whistled and cheered every time one of the girl campers walked past.

Cuylaine Ltactot FACTS ABOUT THE TREATMENT OF VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS Sclerotherapy is a NON-SURGICAL treatment for varicose and spider veins. Using tiny injections, a special sclerosing fluid is put into these dysfunctional veins, allowing them to be absorbed into the body naturally. Treatments take no longer than an average visit to the doctor. Normal activities can be resumed THAT VERY SAME DAY, even if walking a mile is one of them. Most spider and varicose veins, regardless of size or severity, can be eliminated through sclerotherapy without any surgical scarring.
