Juan Berenguer (5-3) pitched two innings of scoreless relief. Jeff Reardon pitched the ninth for his 15th save and 250th of his career. "It's nice to get that," Reardon said, "But it's a move to pull us out of the losing streak, and that's more important." Gaetti homered off reliever Mike Smithson (4-9). San Francisco tied the game in the fourth with the help of singles by Clark and Kevin Mitchell, and errors by right fielder Glenn Wilson and third baseman Bobby Bon-illa. Brett Butler, who had three hits and scored three runs, singled, stole second and scored on Clark's two-out single for a 3-2 lead in the "fifth.

Clark's double made it 6-2 in the sixth. Four RBI gave him 69 for the season, second only to Mitchell's league-leading 83. Giants 8, Pirates 3 SAN FRANCISCO Will Clark overcame his career hitting problems against left-hander John Smiley and drove in four runs to lead San Francisco over Pittsburgh. The left-handed-hitting Clark, who entered the game with only two hits in 24 at-bats against Smiley, had a three-run double and a run-scoring single among his three hits.

"I've hit some balls hard off Smiley in the past but they haven't dropped," Clark said. "He usually has good control and today he didn't. He got some balls over the plate." Mike LaCoss (4-6), winning as a starter for the first time since last July 28, gave up two runs in the first inning. He allowed six hits in six innings, struck out four and The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA Houston took advantage of six Philadelphia errors, including four by third baseman Charlie Hayes, and the Astros beat the Phillies 9-6 Saturday night. Hayes fell one error short of the major league record for third basemen, set by David Brain of the Boston Braves on June 11, 1906.

Six players have committed five errors in a nine-inning game since 1900. Hayes had two putouts and two assists. National League The victory was Portugal's first as a starter since April 19, 1987, with Minnesota. He struck out six and walked two. Houston scored five runs in the first inning, three unearned, off Larry McWilliams (2-9). Billy Hatcher hit the first pitch of the game for a single, and went to third on Craig Biggio's single. Both scored on Bill Doran's double.

Glenn Davis walked, and when Hayes threw wildly on Ken Camini-ti's bunt single, both runners scored. Caminiti later scored on another Hayes throwing error. The Astros added their sixth run in the second when Hatcher was safe on shortstop Dickie Thon's error, stole second and moved to third when catcher Darren Daul-ton's throw went into center field, and scored on McWilliams' wild pitch. Lakeland went ahead 2-0 in the eighth. Rivera walked Cabrera to lead off the inning. Galindo bunted down the first base line and the ball bounced into foul territory. The home plate umpire ruled that Rivera had touched the ball before it went foul, allowing Galindo to reach first and Cabrera to move to second. Hale followed with a single, scoring Cabrera.

The Expos made it 2-1 in the Florida State League ejection of Alou, who protested the game, and Expos mascot Willie P. Bananas, who was thrown out for offering the home plate umpire a pair of glasses after a controversial call. The game also counted in the second-half standings.
