But Tri-Rail officials say the obstacles will pale in comparison with traffic on the highway after construction to widen 1-95 begins this spring. Officials say commuters will appreciate the alternative. "You won't be able to just hop in your car and go," said Ed Kennedy, the rail board chairman and a Broward County commissioner.

But, "once the traffic starts, Tri-Rail is going to look better and better." The logistics of riding the rails are more complicated than most South Floridians are used to, rail officials said. To reach any of the Tri-Rail stations from West Palm Beach to Miami, would-be passengers can hop a shuttle bus. Schedules and maps of bus routes which are marked by signs bearing Tri-Rail's distinctive green, orange and blue logo are available at each station. "The feeder bus system is the most crucial link, but it's also the most flexible," Kennedy said. "We'll adjust it as needed.

If people need to go places other than what we have scheduled, we'll make every effort to accommodate them." Other commuters may opt to drive their cars to the nearest station. Between 45 and 150 parking spaces will be provided at each station, with the largest amount of parking at renovated Amtrak stations that will be used for the Tri-Rail. On test runs, operators have had no trouble keeping to the schedule planned, which is between 5:15 a.m. and 9:13 a.m. and from 3:50 p.m.

to 8:45 p.m., So commuters can expect few delays. Fort Lauderdale station to join passengers from Miami for a symbolic joining of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Despite a 40-minute delay while the train sat on the tracks just Dutside Fort Lauderdale waiting for the Miami train to arrive, most passengers had nothing but praise for the system. "Anyone who took the Tri-Rail today knows it will be a refreshing alternative to Interstate 95," said Sen. Howard Forman, D-Pembroke Pines, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Transportation.

"The ride was smooth, it was quick, it was cool. Now we just have to get people to ride it." 7,000 commuters a day Tri-Rail officials hope the trains eventually will attract 7,000 round-trip commuters a day. The rail network was conceived to relieve traffic on 1-95 when it is being widened. The $105 million road jroject was supposed to begin this nonth but has been postponed until Jus spring. Tri-Rail Executive Director Bill Howard said he heard only compliments about the new system.

"They like the trains, they like the stations, and they think it's going to be a success. Now all we lave to hope is that all these VIPs mil help us continue to pay for the system when they go back to Talla-lassee and Washington." With a Dixieland band playing an a stage decorated with Tri-Rail balloons and brightly colored bunt-irig, officials cut yet another tri-colored ribbon to kick off the rail system before boarding trains to head back north and south. Rep. Carol Hanson, R-Boca Raton, who helped obtain state money pay for the $112 million system, said she was surprised by how quiet the ride was. "It was wonderful," she said.

"Couldn't have asked for a better start for this project." Speeds of 70 mph Inside the double-decker cars, padded seats, water coolers and air conditioning kept the passengers comfortable on the 20-minute ride back to Boca Raton. Conductors wearing tri-colored epaulets patrolled the cars and answered questions, while the train swayed slightly as it hit speeds up to 70 mph. Boca Raton City Councilman Wanda Thayer was ecstatic about the ride. "It was smooth and just great," she said. "I love trains." Despite the nearly flawless opening, officials were scrambling to iron out the last hitches before commuter service begins Monday.

Route maps for feeder buses were being revised Thursday, and workers were installing pay phones near stations Friday. "There comes a point when you just have to start it running and see how it goes," Travasos said, shrugging off the llth-hour obstacles. "The first few months will really be test runs for us, until we figure out where the strongest ridership is and how best to serve the public."
