1 2C THE PALM BEACH POST SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1988 Page two Seaquay eyes fifth win in Riviera Day when she'll probably meet Ogden Phipps' undefeated (10 victories) Personal Ensign. Blame it on the weather. Saratoga's recently concluded 24-day meet was a big disappoint was retired to stud at the end of 1986 but returned to racing this season. The Florida-bred son of Cro-zier is 2-for-4 this year and is eighth on the list of all-time money winners with more than $3.3 mil- ment with both attendance and wagering down from last year. The on-track handle was down J' 7T 5 OPEN 3, 1.7 percent.

Track attendance was 629,560 a 7.7 percent decrease from 1987. The oppresive heat, no doubt, was the problem. I gave up going to Saratoga a long time ago because of the hot lion. The Riviera carries a purse of with the winner receiving i $30,000.

Ridden By Robyn Ehrlinspiel, who has been aboard in all Seaquay's starts, the filly has four wins and four second-place finishes in nine races. Her last victory two weeks ago was the Desert Vixen the first leg of the Florida Stallion Stakes for fillies. In that race, the Fire Dancer filly came from off the pace to catch Sez i Fourty in the stretch to win by 1 Vi lengths. Sez Fourty, with a record of 2-1-3 from six I starts, is the one to catch, and that's been her problem. She likes to go to the front quickly but has a tendency to weaken approaching the wire.

Seaquay has beaten her twice with a come-i from-behind finish. Today's race is a prep for the second leg of the Stallion Stakes in two weeks the $140,000 Susan's Girl on Sunday, Sept. 18. Chris McCarron joined an elite club last Sunday when he rode Fred W. Hooper's Preci-sionist to victory in the Cabrillo Handicap at Del Mar.

That victory put McCarron's winnings at more than $100 million, joining Angel Cordero, Laffit Pincay, Bill Shoemaker and Jorge Velasquez with winnings at that amount. And how about Precisionist? That victory earned $300,000 for the Fappiano colt and vaulted him from 31 to 22 on the money winning list.

Cryptoclearance has nearly $2.3 million in the bank John Henry still is the all-time leader with $6,597,947, but Alysheba is catching up quickly. A few more stakes victories, including a win in the $3 million Classic on Breeders' Cup Day at Churchill Downs in November, could make him No. 1. Mike Tyson will fight Frank Bruno in a mandatory heavyweight title defense Oct. 22 instead of Oct. 8 in London, the champion's manager, Bill Cayton, said Friday. The switch was made after Dr. David Chiu examined a hairline fracture in Tyson's right hand, sustained during an altercation on the street.

A cast was removed Thursday, the hand was X-rayed and Chiu said "the fracture is healing beautifully," Cayton said. "But he recommended the fight be switched from Oct. 8 to Oct. 22 to give the hand an extra two weeks. The fight definitely will be held Oct.

22." Tyson was injured when he hit Mitch Green, a former opponent, in a street fight last week in Harlem. At stake are the Wildcats' 1988 SEC title, most of their 27 victories last season and most of the approximately $500,000 the team made from this year's NCAA basketball tournament. Those could be lost if the NCAA determines UK knew it was using an ineligible player, according to NCAA and SEC officials. The NCAA has not indicated when its findings might be revealed.

Houston Rockets center Akeem Olajuwon, sued last month by a former girlfriend who claimed he deserted her and their daughter, filed a suit asking that he be declared the legal father of the child. Olajuwon, 25, asked a Houston district court to declare him the father of Lita Spencer's two-month-old daughter, and also asked the judge to grant him joint custody and to decide appropriate support payments. Ms. Spencer filed suit in federal court last month alleging that the 6-foot-ll Olajuwon broke a promise to marry her and later argued that he left her for a taller woman "more likely to bear tall sons worthy of his genetic heritage." Dallas Mavericks' guard Rolando Blackman, working this summer as an intern with WFAA-TV News, wound up covering the crash of Delta Flight 1141 at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport earlier this week. "It was a tragedy for those involved," said Blackman, who worked with the film crew but didn't conduct any on-air interviews.

Sullivan wins provisional pole Danny Sullivan outdueled Al Unser Jr. to win the provisional pole for the Escort 200 Indy-car race as the threat of rain today turned the opening qualifying session into a pressure-packed scramble. Sullivan toured the 2.4-mile, 15-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, at 112.766 mph, considerably slower than the track record of 114.791 set by Bobby Rahal in 1985. Speeds generally rise on the second-day of qualifying as the cars lay more rubber on the track and teams zero in on the best chassis setup, but a 100 percent chance of rain forecast by the National Weather Service makes it likely that Friday's times will stand for Sunday's race. After passing a rookie test only hours earlier, Dick Mast led the second day qualifying for the 39th Southern 500 NASCAR race at Darlington International Raceway in Darlington, S.C.

Mast, of Rock Bridge Baths, was clocked at 157.288 mph on a sunny afternoon at the superspeedway to grab the 22nd spot in Sunday's race. Bill Elliott, one of nine drivers to break the qualifying record for the race Thursday, will start on the pole. The Soviet Union will make its auto racing debut on a Western raceway when four Latvian drivers compete in an international Formula Four race this weekend in Lidkoping, Sweden. Olympic rules call for a six-member team and one alternate. Phillips, who has trained with coach Bela Karolyi for years, would have made eight. Her mother, Terri Phillips, said her daughter will train through the weekend and then return to the family home in Baton Rouge, and train there. "It's basically what I felt would happen," the elder Phillips said of her daughter's situation. "She was upset, but she took it well.
