Channel 12 welcomes Nichols back Ask Bob porarily." We recently watched Out of Africa on WTVX (Channel 34) and could swear we saw many scenes for the first time in the TV version that we never saw in the theater or home video. What's the scoop? Where did the extra footage come from and why was it utilized? Scott and Margo Walmsley, West Palm Beach The additional minutes of footage were from scenes that were edited out of the 161-min-ute theatrical version to keep it from running too long. They were re-inserted so that CBS could run Out of Africa for four hours over two nights and make it more profitable. Theatrical releases that run too long often require the insertion of an intermission, which gives theater operators fewer showings per day, making it more difficult to turn a profit. That's why such films are trimmed.

However, when popular Question: What happened to Bob Nichols, who used to report the weekend weather on WPEC-TV (Channel 12)? Hazel Poltlvent, Loxahatchee Answer: Nichols left Channel 12 about two months ago for Alabama to work at NBC affiliate WOWL-TV in Huntsville-Florence-Decatur, the nation's 80th market. His job was a combination of being on the air and handling some management responsibilities, explained Channel 12 spokesman Donn Colee Jr. However, by the time you read this, Nichols will be back working at Channel 12. "He's very well liked, very well liked; we've been getting calls ever since he left asking where he went, and now we're pleased he's back," Colee said. "For his own reasons, things didn't work out to his liking at that station, and at the same time we were looking for a new morning anchor since Donna Clewis recently left for a job in Jacksonville so Nichols will become the co-anchor of our expanded Eyewitness News Daybreak reports, which will go to a half-hour a.m.) on Nov.

1" Nichols will co-anchor the Show with Martha Seibert, who most recently worked as a reporter and late-night anchor for WMGM-TV in Atlantic City, N.J. You gave me an address some time ago to get in touch with George Burns on behalf of my brother-in-law, Al Nelson, who worked with George in a dance studio more than 60 years ago. Well, it took about one year to get George to acknowledge receipt of the item you published, but Al has become quite a celebrity here in Century Village since the arrival of the letter George sent him. Many thanks. I'm enclosing a copy of the letter.

Lou Kaufman, West Palm Beach I'm so glad we finally got the two of them together. Burns' letter also explained why it took so long: "Dear Al: I got a note from your brother-in-law, Lou Kaufman, asking me to say hello. So, Al, hello. So you're 95. You're the only one I know who's older than I am.

I'm only 92. When you're 100 and I'm 98, we'll open another dancing school. My very best, and hello again. George. P.S.

The reason it movies such as Superman are shown on TV, they often end up having 15 or 20 minutes of foct-age re-inserted so they can be shown over two nights. I would like to write to Ed McMahon of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Where? Jesse Mahr, West Palm Beach Write co NBC, The Tonight Show, 3000 W. Alameda Burbank, Calif. 91523.

Is that wonderful show Married With Children going to be back on Fox Broadcasting this fall? I think it is the best comedy on TV. Bundy is great. Peg is outrageous. The kids are wild. The neighbors are funny.

So is this show. Barbara Phillips, Wellington. So, Barb, you own stock in this lame-o show or what? Does a blood relative write it? Seriously, Married With Children seems to be one of those shows that polarizes viewers. I obviously number among those who are rubbed the wrong way by its style of humor, but for those of you who aren't it makes its season premiere at 8:30 p.m. this Sunday.

I like boxing, so I set my videocassette recorder to record FNN and when I play it back, something else is on. Why does FNN do this? It's happened about four times, so now I just ignore that station. John O'Donnell, Lake Worth A spokesman for FNN said there are two possible answers to your problem: "The first, and mostly likely, has to do with the fact that we are three services in one business during the day, sports during the evening, and overnight we're a shopping channel. Some of the local cable systems elect not to carry our sports or shopping services. They may be turning us off after FNN concludes its reports for the day.

A second possible answer has to do with the nature of boxing, a sport in which cancellations are common." Have a question about television past or present?
