Howard (6-3, 3-2) was leading 17-7 when FAMU (6-2-1, 4-1) scored two touchdowns with 1:06 left in the second quarter to give the Rattlers a 21-17 halftime lead. Gainer also scored a touchdown in FAMU's opening drive, and Ezell scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

FAMU won its fifth straight game, including a forfeit loss to Delaware State. touchdowns in less than four minutes on a 65-yard run from scrimmage by Charles McCray and a 61-yard punt return by Richard Shelton as the Flames (6-3) defeated the Knights (6-4) in a Division I-AA game of independents. The Associated Press LOUISVILLE, Ky. Deon Booker's 1-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter broke a 3-3 deadlock Saturday, and Louisville went on to beat error-prone Virginia Tech 13-3 for its fifth straight victory. Louisville (7-3) began its game-winning drive on the Virginia Tech 31-yard line following a short punt and seven-yard return by Joey Hamilton. Booker did most of the damage, running the ball on six of the eight plays for 22 yards, including the scoring run at the 10:25 mark. He finished the game with 83 yards on 23 carries.

Ron Bell's 25-yard field goal with 1:16 left in the game provided the final margin. The Hokies (2-7) crossed mid-field three times in the second half but turnovers ended two drives and a pair of sacks forced a punt on the third. A fumbled punt also set up Bell's kick. The teams traded field goals in the first half. Virginia Tech's Chris Kinzer made a 21-yarder witt 12:23 left in the half, while Bell connected from 52 yards at the 3:53 mark, tying a school record set by Wilbur Summers in 1975.
