Green Bay held a 24-20 'halftime lead thanks to Dickey to Paul Coffman touchdown passes of 36 and 9 yards. "I wouldn'l be if somelhing happens in warm- ups one day." Mixup Will Force Mountaineer Band To Stay Home UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UPI) Wesl Virginia Universily's marching band wanls lo allend the Mountaineers' game Saturday against Penn Stale, bul it appears a communications mixup will force them to stay alhome. There is simply no room at Penn Stale's Beaver Stadium to accommodate the 350- member band, Penn State Athletic Director Jim Tarman said Monday. WVU band director Don Wilcox said band members especially want to go to Saturday's game, because it may mark a Mountaineer victory over the Nittany Lions, which would be its first in 25 years. "Sure they're disappointed," Wilcox said.

"None of our band members were even born the last time we beat Penn State. They are not going to be able to witness this historic occasion." WVU is 6-0 and ranked fourth in the country, while Penn State has struggled to a 4-3 mark. The trouble began last spring when West Virginia failed to note on a questionnaire from Penn State that the marching band wanted to accompany the team to the game, Tarman said. "West Virginia never responded (to the- question about the band)," he said Monday. "To the best of all of our information, we didn't hear from West Virginia about their band until Oct.

3. By that time, it was too late." Tarman said there is room for 75 band members, but West Virginia has said it will either bring the whole band or stay at home. The spaces that could have been available for the WVU band have been alloted to the Penn State alumni marching band, which will perform as part of homecoming activities, Tarman said. "We certainly would welcome the West Virginia band if we could work it out," he said. Wilcox agreed, a communication gap caused the problem.

"In all honesty, I don't think they tried to be subversive about this. There was a mixup in communications somewhere along the line." Redskins countered with a lyard Riggins run and a 28- yard Moseley field goal. The Packers extended their lead on a 24-yard run around right end by Gerry Ellis. Moseley connected on a 31- yard field goal and Theismann hit Washington with a 6-yard touchdown pass to make It 31-30. Moseley then hit a 28- yarder with ten seconds left in the period to give the Redskins their first lead at 33-31.

Riggins' 1-yard run gave Washington a 40-38 advantage but Dickey hit Mike Meade with a 31-yard scoring pass to give the Packers a 45-40 lead. Five minutes later it was the Redskins back on top as Theismann connected with Washington on a 5-yard touchdown pass to make it 47-45. On their next drive, the Packers faced a 3rd-and-10 on their own 36 when Dickey hit Ellis on a 56-yard pass. Four plays later Stenerud, who has connected on 51 of 61 attempts since joining the Packers in 1980, booted the winning points. The Redskins, however, were not dead.

Without a timeout they drove to the Green Bay 22, giving Moseley a chance to win the game. But his kick was wide to the right and the Packers had finally clinched a contest that will long be remembered. "I guess Mark Moseley answered everyone's prayer at the end," Coffman said. Earl Campbell Says He'll Retire After 1984 Season SAN ANTONIO, Texas (UPI) Next season probably will be the last for Houston Oiler running back Earl Campbell. Campbell told reporters at the Quarterback Club Monday that something drastic would have to happen before he changed his plans, which call for retirement after next year. Campbell said he orginally planned to. play only seven seasons in the NFL, and he will reach that milestone at the end of the 1984 season. He said he was unaffected by the resignation last week of Coach Ed Biles, and that coaching changes did not affect his performance.

Campbell and the Oilers are struggling through one of the team's worst starts with an 0-7 record, and have not won a game since before the football players' strike last year.
