Those Less Fortunate Truly See God's Magic By Father LEO HAIGERTY All Saints Catholic Church After a year I still can't get Haiti off my mind: The little boy picking up the lone grain of rice that slipped from his plate which was too precious to be wasted two little girls gathered under the lone light bulb outside the mission church rectory (the only light for miles around) to study their lessons for the next day the women on all roads carrying these huge loads on their heads of baskets of fruit to market miles away or of containers of water to their homes AND YET the joyful zest with which Haitians celebrate the Eucharist! They are not in any hurry to get it over. It's the high point of their week, and they wear good presentable clothes to Mass even when they have nothing else. People on the bottom live from day to day. They have an acute awareness of their need for God and his providence. When they pray "Give us this day our daily bread," they mean it.

People on the bottom recognize more readily what we on the top keep trying to avoid: Only God can see us through. The only wealth we have is the power to turn control of our lives over to God. Maybe that is what Jesus meant when he said "How blest are the poor in spirit!" How blest are they who know their need for God. We hit bottom in many ways. Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-Step groups learned that most addicted people cannot admit they need help and that they are not in control until they have "hit bottom." It seems strange for Jesus to tell all those who have hit bottom that they are "happy" and "blessed," but it makes a little more sense given the 12-Step discoveries.

He is not praising poverty, disgrace, powerlessness as such. He is rejoicing in anything which brings us from our complacent blindness to realize our radical dependence on God for every heartbeat and every breath we take, to realize that God alone can satisfy our Bible Translation Teams Go To Great Lengths To Ensure Accuracy By MICHELE AMES Knight Ridder Newspapers The Christian Bible derives from centuries-old writings in three different languages, produced over hundreds of years by people from different cultures. So it's no wonder that scholars attempting to translate these texts into English often find it a monumental challenge. They're not only dealing with words that often have no English equivalents, they're working with words that many people believe come directly from God. "Those of us who hold to the verbal inspiration from God of Scripture, know very well that while (God's inspiration) is true in the original text, there is no invariable, infallible translation," says John Stek, professor emeritus at Calvin Theological Seminary and chair of the Committee of Bible Translation for the International Bible Society.

"There is no inspired translation. Translations are more or less faithful COME AND GET IT! Did you know we make all our own hand dipped ice cream? 12 Flavors New Flavors Added Periodically! Small Sundaes Spanish Dogs WEVERY SUNDAY SATURDAYS ONLY "''day March and accurate, but they are not inspired." The central problem in translating the Bible is how to move from three different Greek and Aramaic, a dialect of Hebrew into English, without fundamentally changing the meaning or intent of the message. Complications arise because these ancient languages have unisex pronouns, but English doesn't. Traditionally, most translators have just used masculine English pronouns. "There are those who somehow have the notion that you can speak Hebrew with English words.

But, of course, you cannot, And that is one of the great burdens of a translator's job. It is our knowledge, our judgment and our integrity," Stek says. Translators also have to grapple with problems presented by the passage of time. Because biblical text spans many centuries and cultural changes, translators must understand and explain centuries-old idioms to the modern world. AftBRIGHTER! Sick of Ho-Hum Hair Color? Our School Sisters of Notre Dame shared with me a prayer of Sister Carole Metz, who died in their infirmary three years ago, which expressed more beautifully for me what Jesus meant when he said "How blest are the poor in spirit" than anything I have ever seen: "Carole, Poor in spirit How blest you are How blest you are failing How blest you are tired How blest you are worn-out How blest you are.

Why, Lord, am I blest? Because you have become You need me to take your hand and guide you. You no longer walk alone. You need to rest in My loving arms. You no longer are compulsively doing, You have time to listen to My heart's song. You no longer have all the answers.
