Since joining the West Palm Beach Expos as a free agent seven games ago, the switch-hitting veteran of the Seattle Mariners minor league system has shown he belongs at a higher level than Class A. That makes sense, considering he was in his second season playing for the Mariners' Class AAA affiliate Calgary when he asked for, and received, his release last May. Fulton, 27 and in his sixth minor league season, had two doubles and two RBI Sunday night as the Expos beat Lakeland 4-1, then dropped the second game of a doubleheader 3-2. Fulton is 8-for-20 with five RBI in seven games for the Expos. "It bothers me to see him here where he doesn't belong," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "And it also bothers me that we might lose him." Alou said the length of Fulton's stay in West Palm Beach will depend on the needs of Class AA Jacksonville and Class AAA Indianapolis. Meanwhile, he is more than happy to have Fulton anchor a line-up depleted by promotion. Leading hitters Matt Stairs and Jim Faulk were called up earlier this year. "Fulton is replacing two players at the same time," Alou said. "He replaces Faulk and Stairs. If he's going to go up, we're going to need two players to replace him." Fulton remains confident that he will play someday in the major leagues, and he sees this as an opportunity to prolong his career. "I'm just lucky that I have a second chance to play baseball again," Fulton said. "I just felt like I wasn't getting any playing time with Calgary. There's no way you can get to the big leagues if you're putting nothing on the board." Fulton's best season was 1986 with Salinas of the Class A California League. He hit .272 with 10 home runs and 68 RBI. He's never managed to match those numbers, but moved up the ladder slowly by learning the utili ty role. "It's hard to get in the power groove when you re not playing regularly," Fulton said. "I try to concentrate on contact, and the home runs will come." Fulton played for Expos third base coach Dave Jauss at Atlantic Christian College, and Jauss rec ommended that the Expos sign Ful ton. So far that move has paid off for West Palm Beach. A career in professional base ball is foremost in Fulton's mind now, and impending expansion gives him further hope of someday making it big. "Everybody here thinks he can play in the big leagues," Fulton said. "As long as youve got j uniform on, you've got a chance." In the fourth inning of the first game Sunday, Expos center fielder Todd Mayo walked with the bases loaded to make give West Palm Beach a 2-1 lead. The Expos added two more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Fulton and a wild pitch by Tigers pitcher Hector Berrios that scored second baseman Rob Fletcher. Expos starter John Thoden (2-3) was the winning pitcher and Mike Lumley (2-3) was the loser in the first game. Darryl Martin hit a two-run home run in the seventh and last inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Tigers the doubleheader split. Expos starter Dan Freed (10-5) was the loser and Lakeland reliever Ron Cook (3-0) was the winner. Lakeland 3, WP Beach 2 St. Lad 101 OOO 001 OOO 2 0 i.
