"A friend of mine, Jerry Matar-azzo, did it in 1988," said who, like Matarazzo, played high school baseball at Jupiter. "He hit 10 home runs in Legion that year onri itrtiAn hit rrn r-lo rorCnt 1 I hf Allen's homer leads AL to 10-0 Old-Timers victory CHICAGO Old sluggers don't disappear, they just go to Wrigley Field and hit more home runs.

Dick Allen showed he could still reach the seats at age 48, sending a drive into the left-center field bleachers Monday in the Old-Tim-ers Game. Allen, a seven-time All-Star, was the only player to homer in the American's 10-0 victory in two innings. Henderson, Reds' Morris AL, NL players of the week CHICAGO Outfielder Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics was named American League Player of the Week. Henderson went 10-for-29, a .345 average, with four homers, seven RBI and seven runs scored. Hal Morris of the Cincinnati Reds, with a .625 average and three homers, was named National League Player of the Week.

Morris drove in seven runs and scored eight during the week. His slugging average was 1.188 and he had an on-base percentage of .647. Oakland's Stewart gets Clemente Award CHICAGO Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart was selected as the recipient of the 20th Roberto Clemente Award, presented annually to the player who best exemplifies baseball on and off the field. "Roberto was a great man and did many things that nobody even knew about," Stewart said. "I'm honored to get this award because we remember all the good things Roberto did, not because of what Dave Stewart is doing." 8-of-10 highest-paid players missing from All-Star Game CHICAGO Eight of baseball's 10 biggest contracts belong to players who didn't make the 1990 All-Star team, including Don Mattingly and three pitchers who threw no-hitters this season Dave Stewart, Nolan Ryan and Mark Langston (with an assist from Mike Witt).

In fact, the only two Big Ten players who made it to Chicago for tonight's game were Jose Canseco of Oakland ($4.7 million a year) and Will Clark of San Francisco ($3.75 million). Others with big contracts who didn't make the All-Star Game included Mark Davis, Robin Yount, Eric Davis and Joe Carter. Some, like Stewart and Ryan, could have made the team, but didn't. Others like Mattingly, Langston, Mark Davis and Yount didn't deserve it. The Associated Press ST.

LOUIS The St. Louis Cardinals continued their search Monday for a successor to Whitey Herzog, focusing at least in part on two former National League managers. Herzog, who was in his 11th season as Cardinals manager, resigned Friday, saying he no longer was able to motivate his players. The Cards named coach Red Schoendist interim manager and began a search for a permanent replacement. General Manager Dal Maxvill received permission from the Philadelphia Phillies to speak to one of their coaches, former Houston Astros manager Hal Lanier.

Lanier, who managed Houston to an NL West title in 1986, was a St. Louis coach from 1981 through 1985. Meanwhile, Maxvill was in Chicago, possibly to interview former New York Mets and Atlanta Braves manager Joe Torre. Torre, a broadcaster for the California Angels since being fired in 1984 by Atlanta, said during the weekend he would be interested in discussing the Cardinals job but would not apply. Philadelphia's general manager, Lee Thomas, said Maxvill was Two outt when winning run scored.

Wodraska, a 6-foot, 175-pound left-handed first basemanleft fielder for Post 271, is in the last of four years playing Legion ball. In the fall, he will be a sophomore at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, where he hit .340 with three home runs and 37 RBI in 43 games as a right fielder last year. "I've always been up there in stats, but never quite this Wodraska said.

This is my best legion year ever, but it helps when you've got 1 guys like Andy Abad and David Ahr getting on base in front of you." Jupiter beat Boynton 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Sun- day. Wodraska hit a two-run, bases- loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning for the victory. He hopes to eventually transfer to the University of Florida.

Earlier this season, Port St. Lu- cie pitcher Doug Petty suffered a broken jaw when he was hit by a line drive at FAU.

Petty is recover- ing, although his jaw is expected to remain wired shut until December. "He is playing golf now, and his spirits are up," Port St. Lucie coach Les Rarrieck said. District 11 chairman Jim Eden ruled Wednesday in favor of Boyn- ton Beach's protest of a loss to Palm Beach Post 12. Palm Beach manager Scott Benedict had been ejected in a loss to Miramar June 20.

Boynton Beach claimed Benedict didn't sit out the next game against Boynton and instead managed from the stands. Palm Beach won the game, but Eden awarded a 9-0 victory to Boynton. Benedict had to sit out last Friday's game against Mira- mar. 7 Beginning Monday, Boca Raton plays Hollywood in a best two- of-three series to determine the area's representative at the state 'B' tournament Aug. 2-5 at Board- walk and Baseball.

In addition to hitting .316, Vero Beach's Andy Stenger has not been thrown out in 17 base stealing attempts. RODGERSfrom 1C The exodus along with the loss of outfielder Hubie Brooks was enough for most to pick the Expos to finish at the bottom of the National League East. As baseball enters the annual All-Star break, the Expos are once again the NL's classic overachievers. Buoyed by a patchwork pitching staff that is second in the league with a 3.10 ERA, Montreal is 47-37, 3V2 games behind the division-leading Pittsburgh Pirates. "Going into the year we had a lot of question marks," General Manager Dave Dombrowski said.

"We did not know what to expect. If you were to tell us we'd be going into the All-Star Game a couple of games out of first place, we'd have been very surprised." Langston, Smith and Perez are a combined 11-17 with a 4.09 ERA in their new surroundings. Their replacements, Mark Gardner, Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and Zane Smith, are 14-13 with a 3.16 ERA. The three newcomers to the rotation are not the sole unexpected contributors to the staff. Bill Sampen (7-1) and Dave Schmidt (12 saves) have revived a bullpen that lost ace Tim Burke (hairline fracture of the right fibula) six weeks ago.

All of Schmidt's saves have come since Burke's injury. The emergence of these five pitchers, who were a combined 14-31 and considered either damaged goods or no good, may be a stroke of good luck for this franchise, which has had its share of heart Year Team Rec. Maxvill, a former Torre teammate with the Cardinals, coached under Torre when Torre managed the Mets, 1977-81, and Braves, 1982-84. Torre, who played six seasons for St.

Louis beginning in 1969, was the NL's Most Valuable Player in 1971, when he hit .363 with 137 RBI. Maxvill confirmed Torre was on a short list of candidates from which he hoped to name Herzog's successor in 10 days to two weeks. Others speculated to be Cardinals managerial candidates include current coaches Rich Hacker, Jim Riggleman and Mike Roarke. Maxvill said he did not anticipate that Ted Simmons, hired a year ago as director of player development, would be interested in the job. So far, Schoendienst, the win-ningest manager in Cardinals history, has a 2-1 record for St.

Louis this year. The Cardinals (35-48) are last in the NL East, 15 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. Schoendienst, 67, managed St. Louis from 1965 through 1976, the longest term in club history, and led the Cardinals to NL pennants in 1967 and 1968. breaks.

But Dombrowski thinks more than good will has intervened. "Buck Rodgers is one of the best managers in the game," Dombrowski said. "His best asset is his ability to handle pitchers and his knowledge of pitching and catching. The only difference between Buck and a Whitey Herzog or a Tommy Lasorda or Sparky Ander-. son is we haven't won a championship." The most embarrassing defection was that of Langston.

The Expos sacrificed three young pitching prospects Randy Johnson, Brian Holman and Okeechobee's Gene Harris last May to acquire Langston from the Seattle Mariners. While Johnson and Holman have become the staples of the Mariners staff (Johnson was named to the All-Star team and pitched a no-hitter this season and Holman pitched a perfect game for 8 innings), the Expos have nothing to show for them. "I just kept substracting in my mind," said Rodgers, who was voted the top manager in Class AAA in 1984 and in the NL in 1987. "When Pascual went I said, 'We can bring Zane out of the When Langston left we had Gardner, who had a great year in the minors. So maybe we could replace him.

When Bryn Smith left, I said, 'Oh We didn't have anybody else ready." Out of desperation as much as need, the Expos signed Schmidt, who was 51-51 in eight seasons with Texas and Baltimore; Boyd, the enigmatic right-hander from Bos- when he'll be needed or where." DH Bob Olah also had a big night, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. "He (Vero pitcher Bill Bene) just put them over the plate," said Olah. "Something within the bat's reach." Olah credits his improved hitting to a change in attitude. "I'm more relaxed, and just trying to pull up my (batting) average before the season ends," he said. "At the beginning of the year, I was overanxious and swinging at everything.

Now I just sit and be patient (at the plate)." St. Lucie (10-8) got to Bene early, taking a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Mets scored three runs on five hits in the second inning. D.J. "It's a good feeling having something to fall back on," he said.

Lucie Mets got back on a winning track Monday night, beating the Vero Beach Dodgers 6-2 at the St. Lucie County Sports Complex. After winning five consecutive games, the Mets lost to Sarasota 9-5 Saturday night, then lost to Miami by the same score Sunday. Mets pitcher Dave Telgheder (5-0) reemained undefeated, holding the Dodgers scoreless for six innings. He gave up two runs on just seven hits while walking one and striking out five in 7 innings.

Steve LaRose finished the game for St. Lucie. "This was a big game for me," Telgheder said. "We had lost two in a row, and that makes me more Until Gross broke the middle finger of his right hand last month, the regular rotation started 71 of the Expos' first 74 games. The Expos have played with more confidence and less pressure than a year ago.

When Langston was acquired, Montreal sent out a "win-now-or-else" message to the team. The day Langston arrived, Montreal was three games out of first place. Two months later, Langston shut out Philadelphia to give the Expos a 3 Vis -game lead. Montreal was 22-39 from that point and finished 81-81, 12 games behind the Cubs. In the final month, Montreal went from two games behind to 12.

"When Langston came in it was almost like a feeling that we shouldn't lose," Rodgers said. "We were trying too hard, almost to the point where people were afraid to make mistakes. "Now we're a lot looser. There is not that sense of urgency that was there last year." The biggest test will come in the next month, when Montreal either stays with the Mets and Pirates and makes a run for its second divison title, or fades as it has so many times in its 22-year history. "We've got a lot of young players on our ballclub.

We have a foundation of our everyday lineup for years to come," Dombrowski said. "It will be a real plus to be in a pennant race. The real pressure doesn't start until August and I hope we're there when it comes." sixth when Nikco Riesgo walked, stole second and third, and scored on an error. Vero Beach (9-11) scored two runs in the seventh. With one out, Mike Piazza singled and came home on Eric Young's triple.

Jose Munoz's sacrifice fly scored Young. Bene (1-7) took the loss, yielding six runs on 10 hits. He walked seven and struck out three. Ray Calhoun relieved him in the sixth inning and finished the game for the Dodgers. ton who also had a history of shoulder trouble; and 37-year-old Joaquin Andujar.

Things were so bad that Zane Smith, who was a woeful 1-13 last season, was considered a lock to start. Amazingly, this vagabond group which includes two other former castoffs, Kevin Gross and Dennis Martinez has been one of the most consistent in baseball. LaRose pitch Mets to 6-2 victory over Dodgers Dozier and James Morrisette both singled and advanced on Doug Saunders' sacrifice. Olah's single scored both baserunners. Olah went to second on an error, took third on a passed ball and scored on Derek Henderson's single.

With one out in the third, Alan Zinter doubled and Dozier- and Morrisette walked, loading the bases. With two out, Olah singled, scoring Dozier. St. Lucie added a run in the Law school a reality for dreaming Boddie Florida State League motivated. Every time I go out there I expect to win." Pitching coach Joel Horlen was pleased with Telgheder's performance.

"He looked real good," said Horlen. "He mixed his pitches real well." Telgheder began the season with the Columbia (S.C.) Mets and had a 9-3 record before being called up. When asked how long he expected Telgheder to remain with the St. Lucie squad, Horlen replied, "Until they call him up. There's no telling will continue trying to build his baseball dreams at least one more season.

After that, Boddie's view of the future becomes a little, well, fuzzy. "Baseball has priority now, law is secondary," Boddie said. "If I'm moving up in the organization and playing well, I'll keep playing. I love it here in West Palm Beach. I'd be satisfied finishing up the season here.

But if I'm here next season, it will probably be my last. At age 25 in single-A ball, that's kind of old. I think I'd be stagnating if that happens." But don't forget those two suns sharing that same horizon. Setting and rising in unison. Just in opposite directions.

And don't forget Rod Boddie, the son of an Army colonel, born in LaChappell, France, who spent his childhood dreaming of becoming a college basketball player or a Major League baseball player, an adult clinging to two dreams, an adolescent one and a grown-up one. "It's something I've been interested in for awhile. I've always been interested in our constitution and the structure of our government. "Law is something that affects 3ur lives everyday, whether we're aware of it or not.
