Page 12 Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana Friday, June 1, 1984 Box Office Hits "Raiders' sequel sets records at theatres around the country Staff "Indiana Jones" conquered "Return of the Jedi" for the single highest grossing day in the country and promises to be one of the most popular movies to hit Logansport as well. The movie set records with a $9.3 million box office last Sunday, bringing the film's six-day total to $42.2 million. State Theatre owner William Ritchie says its too early to tell how popular the shows will be, but audiences for the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" sequel "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" have been heavy during its first week in town. Ritchie, who has operated movie theaters in Logansport for 15 years, says both "Indiana Jones" and the "Star Trek" sequel opening today have the potential to be among the most popular shows during the time he's been in Logansport. He says the popularity of "Indiana Jones" will make more money for the show locally than "Patton" did, even though the movie will probably not draw as many people because the State is now a double cinema.

The theater owner says other popular shows during the past 15 years have been "Billy Jack," "The Godfather," "Poseidon Adventure," "Towering Inferno," "Jaws," "The Sting," and "Smokey and the Bandit." Kristi Waymire, manager of the UA Movies at Cass Plaza for the past six years, says other popular shows that have been the major box office hits at her theater have included "E.T.," "Return of the Jedi," "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back," "Every Which Way But Loose," "Nine to Five," "Porky's," and the predecessor of "Indiana Jones," "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Ritchie says the word "Indiana" in the title of the movie has not proved to be a particular boost for the show's viewing in the state, but may make it an added plus as the show plays more theaters during the summer. "Indiana the latest in a successful line of Stephen Spielberg movie hits which includes "E.T.", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Close Encounters of the Third made $42 million last weekend, breaking the previous Memorial Day weekend record of $41 million set last year by tne third episode of "Star Wars" entitled "The Return of the Jedi." Today's opening of "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" will reveal whether the title's pointy-eared Vulcan who died on film two summers ago comes back to life. The film, third installment in the "Star Trek" movie series, opens today in 1,966 theaters, the most screens in motion picture history. Before his death in the preceding film, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," Spock played by Leonard Nimoy, who also directed the third segment underwent a "mindmeld" with his cantankerous rival, ship's surgeon "Bones" McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley. BOX Opens 7:30 P.M.
