Arka- oeipnia. I see in Thb Gazette of the 29th Inst, a statement from the pen of your captain, Thomas in reference to the match game played at Hot Springs on' the 19th and 20th of this month. There are also some criticisms on yonr kindness to me and the nnceremonious manner in "which I left Arkadelphia. In reply-to which, I'll just say that, from the time. I arrived, there, up to the day we played in Hot Springs, was tne grateful recipient or every kindness and attention that the most exacting could ask, and While I confess mat reel deeply tne injustice aone me.

concerning the Hot Springs contest, yet can never cease to appreciate the kindness shown me previous to that Yet I could not maintain my self-respect and remain with a club who bad accused me of accepting a Dribe, which is as foreign to my nature as the ice-clad regions of the north pole are to our own. sunny clime. I can say with truth that I never tried, as hard to win a game in my life as I did the. one in Hot Springs. 1 was offered various sums, amounting in all 40" several dollars if I would gain a yictory for our own club, but not one cent was pnered by any one to play off for the benefit of our honorable opponents.

They are gentlemen, and would not insult me (and through me our club and their guests) by any such proposi tion, i am astonianea tnat the Clippers, could so far forget the courtesies shown us as to accuse them of anything so unworthy true gentle men. My ancestors have left me the graud heritage of au untarniahed name. I've never known one of the name to be ruilty of anything dishonorable, and ar rather would I live and die in pennry and waut than do aught that wonld cast a blemish on the untarnished es cutcheon of the Rlngo family. The first lesson taught me, at my mother's knee were those of truth, honor and integrity, and let me die, yea die a thousand times rather than prove disloyal to the teach ingsormy mother or recreant to a trust reposed la me. I presume there is not a man living who can't do cer tain things better than at others, I care not whether his business be ball-playing, lecturing, farminx, sell ing goods, practicing law or physic.

They can an perform their repect ive duties better sometimes than at others. Hence, it may nave, oeen tnat didn't play as well aa 1 played on former oo caslons, but in alL the annals of baseball hiatory a greater injustice never has been done toan you have done me. I did my very best and we were fairly and honestly beaten, and that is all there is in it Many ol the best clubs In the world have had to wear the som bre weeds of defeat before we did, We gained aeveu games out of nine, and because we didn't win those two you must accuse me of an act that would bring the blush of shame to the cheeks ot the untutored aona of the South Sea Islands, much less one reared amid all the influences of culture and education. If I'd been bribed to play off on our boys, do yon suppose that other clubs all over the state, Including Hot Springs, would want me to play with them, and act as umpire? Far from It. They would know that if I'd betray the Arkadelphia club I'd betray them, and they would not want me, and yet I receive letters almost every day from these places urgisg me to pliy for them.

While I am proud to acknowledge all your kindness to me, I also feel that I did my best for you. Your captain says it will never be known whether I played off for the benefit of the Hot Springs club or not. Now I don't be lieve that one of your club thinks for one moment that I hold my honor so lightly. Haif a million dollars would have been no inducement for me to sacrifice my honor and forfeit the trust and respect with-which they had favored me. I beg leavd to inform you, gentlemen, that I hold my honor, too high to be bartered for dollars ana eents.

it we had not won a tingle game yon had no right to bring any sucb charge against me or attribute one aeiect to tne ais-honeety of any one of your members. Such a thing la a mere excuse and un worthy the young men comprising the Dale GliDDeri ol Arkaaeipnia, In rea-artLto my unceremonlus de parture from your town, I think I had sufficient cause for leaving as I did when I'd be addressed at every corner with the salutation, i heard yon play Jt Ann Ksttoai 7 enrwl At Aral I Vlft VIA VII VUI aft; a eatae wwaasaw sat feel like eaylng good bys to the boys under these circumstances? Your Hot Sprlnes correspondent seems to be the most nnphilisophical liar to be found un article in Tint Gazette of the 28th, charging tha Standard with having published an article to the effect that Bingo, catcher for the Dale Clippers "threw on tne game for a sum of money," ana mat ne "had been discharged from the club on that account." ia positively without fnnndation. as the columns of the standard ahow.

Cel. Byrd Smith of thia county, Is announced aa a candidate for repre sentative in congress of the United states from this (the Fifth) congres elonal district.

CoL Smith is a politi cal crank. He haa been running for office ever since your correspondent can remember, first on one ticket and then on another greenbacker, democratic, and neutral, and he de-mauds this time as "subject to the will ol the people at the baliot-box," wnue the other gentlemen are running sub join to the ectlou of a democratic con gresstonal convention. The democratic congressional conven tion for the Fifth congressional district will meet at Harmon, lioone county, on FridayOctober 1, 1886. Peel will likely get tne nomination. The canvass for county officers in this county will open on Tuesday, August 3.

This will be the most interesting canvass made in Izard since the Shaw aud Blaok canvass. The candidates for representative spoke at Newburg last Saturday. The Izard county democratic cen tral committee will meet here on Sat urday, August 7, to see about the pro priety ot putting out a full county ticket The Wheelers do not Intond to put out a ticket until just before the September election, consequently the best thing the democracy of Izard can do will be to call a convention and put out a straight, thoroughbred, lull fledged democratic ticket and fill it with meu who are true to the cause, aud freeze out all half-breeds and weak kneed ones. BRINKLEY. Local Politics "Mixed" The Growing Crops. Special to the Arkansas Gazette, Brinklky, July '80. The political situation in our county ia considerably confused and unsettled. The Wheelers claim the right to dictate who the candidates for county offices shall be, and the unmixed democracy will support a clean straight democratic ticket.

The fight between the two factions will be red hot Meanwhile the republicans are under the Impression that they are less dupe. It is an easy matter to get noid -or a copy or any issue of the Standard at Hot Springs.
