Gruber homered for the third straight game, one short of George Bell's team record. The Blue Jays have won three consecutive games and Cleveland lost its third in a row. Glenallen Hill and Pat Borders also homered for the Blue Jays, providing the power on a night when downtown Toronto was plunged into a blackout because of a blown transformer. The only noticeable sign at the SkyDome was a brief flash on the scoreboard. Angels 3, Red Sox 1 BOSTON Kirk McCaskill and two relievers worked out of con-.

stant trouble and California beat Boston for its second victory in seven games. The Red Sox loaded the bases three times without scoring and left 14 runners on base. They got 13 hits and four walks, but their only run came in the fourth inning on Bill Buckner's inside-the-park homer. McDowell NEW YORK Mike Marshall's tiebreaking pinch double highlighted a five-run rally in the eighth inning as the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 8-5 Wednesday night for their fourth straight victory. The loss dropped the Braves to 2-10 for the season and extended their losing streak at Shea Stadium to eight games. Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Mets rallied against reliever Mike Stanton (0-2). Gregg Jeffenes led off with a single and Howard Johnson singled with one out. Second baseman Jeff Treadway then mishandled Darryl Strawberry's grounder, loading the bases before Kevin McReynolds two-run single tied the score.

Strawberry took third on the hit and McReynolds moved to second on the throw home. After pinch- hitter Tim Teufel was intentionally walked, Marshall doubled off reliever Rich Luecken to put the Mets ahead. Kevin Elster hit a sacrifice fly, his third RBI, to make it 8-5. Ron Darling (1-2) made only his second relief appearance in 210 major league games and got the victory. John Franco got the last three outs for his fifth save.

Atlanta starter John Smoltz allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings, with seven strikeouts. Lonnie Smith tied the score 3-3 when he led off the Braves' third against David Cone with a home run, and Jim Presley followed with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Tommy Gregg walked and Dale Murphy, who had three hits, had an infield single to load the bases with none out. Cone struck out Ernie Whitt, but with Jeff Blauser batting, Presley scored on a wild pitch. The Braves made it 5-3 in the fourth when Smith walked with two outs and scored on Presley's second double.

The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the second inning on Elster's two-run triple and an RBI single by Cone, who led all NL pitchers with 18 hits in 1989. Atlanta scored two runs in the first on RBI singles by Smith and Murphy. Cone allowed eight hits and five runs in 3 innings, striking out nine. Expos 1, Astros 0 HOUSTON Tim Raines scored on a ninth-inning wild pitch by reliever Dave Smith, giving Montreal a victory over Houston. Raines singled with one out in the ninth and moved to third on a two-out single by Andres Galarraga.

Galarraga moved to second on the first of Smith's two consecutive wild pitches, but Raines was unable to advance on the play. But the second wild pitch hit in front of the plate and bounced by catcher Craig Biggio, allowing Raines to score. Steve Frey (1-0) was the winner, pitching a perfect eighth inning, and Tim Burke recorded his fifth save, pitching the ninth. He allowed a leadoff single to Biggio, but Bill Doran hit a one-hopper to Delino DeShields, who tagged Biggio and threw to first for the double play. Smith (0-1) was the loser despite striking out three batters in his only inning.

off Bret Saberhagen (1-2) in the second when Parker's slicing liner got past Wilson in center field and went to the wall. It was Parker's first triple since 1988, and he scored on Greg Brock's sacrifice fly. "Usually my line drives have backspin and they stay in the air for a long time," Parker said. "This one sunk in the nick of time. Willie made a good effort at it, but it fell short and it got past him and right away I started thinking three." Saberhagen finished the game for the Royals, allowing just four hits.

The Royals played without starting outfielders Bo Jackson and Jim Eisenreich, who returned home because of illness in their families. "I'm not making any excuses. Sure you want your best guys out there," said Kansas City manager John Wathan. "We hit some balls hard and once again, nothing to show for it. George (Brett) had a great at-bat, then popped up.

That's the situation you want to be in right there with those guys up Willie swinging the bat and George, who has done it for so many years." BREWERSfrom 1C relieved Crim and ended the threat by getting George Brett to pop up and Willie Wilson to hit into a double play. "You don't get out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation very often. Any time you do, you have to get pretty lucky, especially falling behind 2-0 to Brett," Plesac said. "He popped it up in the infield and that happens one out of 10 times. I really thought the squeeze play would be on with Wilson.

I was trying to come inside and jammed him and got a double-play ball." Milwaukee manager Tom Tre-belhorn said realistically he expected the Royals to get at least one run out of the situation. "You always hope for a popup and double play and that's what happened," he said. "I didn't think we had much of a chance to get a double play up the middle. Willie Wilson is swinging the bat right now as well as I've seen him. He's tough to double up.

But he hit the ball hard right at Dale (Sveum)." Plesac got the last three outs in the ninth for his first save. Hesketh released by Montreal MONTREAL Joe Hesketh, a member of the Montreal organization since 1980, was placed on waivers by the Expos Wednesday for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Hesketh had appeared in two games this season, pitching three scoreless innings in mop-up roles. The 31-year-old left-hander had fallen into disfavor last season with a 5.77 ERA in 43 outings from the Expos bullpen. The arrival of John Costello, a right-hander obtained from St. Louis earlier in the week, led to Hesketh's release.

tered the game with a league-leading .444 average, then walked and stole second. But Joel Smith flew out to left to end the inning. The Expos again came close in the ninth. Joel Smith followed Stairs' strikeout with a base hit and then stole second. Fred Williams walked and Frank Paul Santangelo singled to load the bases.

A 556. 3:40. REDSfrom 1C season high en route to their 10th victory in 12 games. The Phillies tied the score in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ricky Jordan and a two-run double by Darren Daulton. Cincinnati scored four runs in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Benzinger, a two-run single by Paul O'Neill, and an RBI single by Joe Oliver.

The Reds scored another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Benzinger, and the Phillies added their final run in the bottom of the inning when reliever Norm Charlton walked hayes with the bases loaded. The Reds added four more runs in the eighth on RBI doubles by Billy Hatcher and Benzinger, a sacrifice fly by Herm Winningham, and Oliver's RBI single. Florida State League come around now for about 20 games," said Alou, whose team broke a 21 -inning scoreless inning streak. "He started hitting the ball hard last about this time. He's one guy who can really challenge the wind.

I thought it was just a matter of time." The Expos almost yielded a run in the 12th, but center fielder Todd Mayo threw out Lakeland's Mike Tresh at home. Tresh had reached first on a single and stolen second before Jody Hurst's base hit into center was grabbed by Mayo. Tresh slammed into catcher Rob Mason but Mason held on for the third out. The Expos nearly scored in the sixth inning. After leadoff batter Rob Fletcher was caught stealing, Terris singled.

Terris was thrown out on a fielder's choice hit by Faulk. Faulk then stole second and became the game's first baserun-ner to reach third when he advanced on a wild pitch by starter Todd Krum. With the wind blowing in and the starting pitchers throwing well, the conditions were ideal for an Expos victory. Alou almost overdosed on his good fortune however, until Jim Faulk's 12th-inning triple scored Adam Terris and led the Expos (11-8) to 4 1-0 victory over the Lakeland Tigers (11-9) Wednesday night before 556 in a Florida State League game at Municipal Stadium. "It was almost too good," Alou said of the game.

"But I was not surprised that we won because of the game's conditions." Rob Kerrigan (1-0) got the win after allowing one hit and one walk in two innings.
