With! out football, Phillips' life would hava little direction. 1 It isn't clear why Osborne couldn't have assigned Phillips to the scout team. Let him work out against Nel braska's powerful first-string del fense, but keep him off the field Satl urday. He has his structure this way, hi has his football, but not on garni day, which should be reserved fof people who don't show up on thl police blotter. On Saturday, the majority of the Memorial Stadium faithful seemed willing to let bygones be bygones Phillips' approval rating began to rise a few weeks ago when he called an Omaha radio talk show out of the" blue to wax appropriately remorse ful.

He said he'd made a mistake. He was accepting the consequences of his actions. He could have quit school, hired an agent and prepared himself for the NFL draft, but he hadn't. It wasn't as if he was getting off Scot free. 't Not everyone agreed.

One of Phillips' sanctions, besides counseling sessions and community services, was mandatory class attendance. Some people, including the director of the Nebraska women's center, were confused. They'd always figured attending class was a privilege! A coach's problems do not end, ap 1 JEFFREY Z. CARNEYThk Nebraska's Leslie Dennis tips the ball away from Iowa State's Ed Williams. as', "I've taken my share of hits, bu that OK, Osborne said. I ve gon from too nice a guy to some kind of villain, win at all costs." i On Tuesday, a network TV report Continued from Page ID touchdowns of 17, 26 and 64 yards. The game marked the return of Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips, who had been suspended since Sept. 10 for attacking a former girlfriend. Green started, but Phillips carried 12 times for 68 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown dash in the third quarter.

"I wanted to score a touchdown on the first carry, but that didn't hap-; pen," Phillips said. 1 McCamey, whose team fell to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Eight, was quick to say that he didn't believe Nebraska was pouring it on to pro-; tect its No. 1 ranking. "Coach Tom Osborne is a class act," McCarney said. "I've always 1 said that and I believe it "He substituted freely, and at no 2 time in the game did I feel Nebraska was trying to run up the score.

They I were just in another league." McCarney said Osborne told him after the game that he "was sorry I the score got away." McCarney responded by telling Os- bome, "That's not your fault. It's our fault." Iowa State strong safety Matt Straight called the result an embarrassment. "I had a lot of family and friends from Logan, here for the game, and I didn't want it to turn out like this. "I'm afraid to go back to Logan and face the people back there." Iowa State's only touchdowns came on Todd Bandhauer's 15-yard pass to Ed Williams in the second quarter and Graston Norris' 6-yard run in the fourth period. Nebraska had a 14-0 lead before Iowa State's offense got the ball.

Frazier's 4-yard touchdown run ended the Huskers' first possession, then Iowa State couldn't handle the kickoff. Kris Brown popped the kick high into the air, and Iowa State failed to handle it. Nebraska took over on the Cyclones' 41, and Frazier fired a 6-yard scoring pass to Green 1 1 plays later "I don't know if they intentionally kicked the ball that way," McCarney said. "We just misjudged it. "Our five guys just took off running to get into position to block somebody, and we didn't see it.

We didn't communicate." Osborne said the short kick wasn't intentional. "We were trying to kick it deep, and there was more wind up there than down on the field," he explained. "It was just one of those crazy things that happens in football." Nebraska led, 20-0, after one quarter and 38-7 at halftime. Fifteen Nebraska players carried the ball. Clinton Childs ran for 70 yards and scored on a 13-yard run.

Joel Makovicka ran for 31 yards, and scored on an 18-yard run. Nebraska hasn't lost to Iowa State in Lincoln since 1977. "I think Iowa State played hard, and I think they've got a decent team," Osborne said. "We wish them well the rest of the year. I thought the strongest part of their team was their offense." Osborne said he was a bit' apprehensive about his team going into the game.

"When you play Kansas State and Colorado back-to-back, sometimes there's a little tendency to have an emotional letdown, but I didn't think we did," Osborne said. "I don't think it was maybe an inspired game, but I think it was a solid game." JKKKKKY Z. Supi pose the victim had been related Osborne. Would Phillips have been allowed back then? The report aired Friday night. Osborne said he'd heard about it, but hadn't seen it The hit-arid-run' outsiders don't bother him, he said, so much as the negative reaction of friends. "I guess I feel bad about the people in the state who've observed what we've been doing here for 30 yearj and don't agree with what we're do; ing," he said. "It's easy for someone to come in here from the outside fo 48 hours.

They've got to do theijf thing, grab some headlines. It's the people here who don't believe in out intent. Maybe what we're doing isn't right. But to have our intent que tioned. When Phillips entered the game with about 10 minutes to play in the first quarter, the intent was to score a touchdown.

Subdued applause rippled through the stadium. "That's good to hear," said one o) the Nebraska radio announcers, Not if you knew the young women who was assaulted. The Cornhuskers won, 73-14. wasn't a standing ovation. It wasnj a rousing reception. Not everyon was willing to welcome Phillips back with open arms. But if there, were' conscieritiou? objectors, their views went mostli unexpressed.

After the game, Phillips walkef into the interview room, sat down a table full of microphones and peated his regrets. He thanked 0 borne and everyone else who'd hun with him, everyone who gave hirt the chance to stay in school. "I'm working on anger problem and going to counseling," he said "I'm sorry the incident had to taki place and, hopefully, something lik that will never happen again." He said Green deserved the joc and that his teammate would "defj-nitely be up for the Heisman nexj year." Next year? Did that mean Phillip only a junior, won't be back for hi senior season? Sure sounded like it Poor, poor Huskers. 1 Cyclones 'not playing with a lot of Straight says Iowa State can bounce back in Saturday's home finale against Kansas State. "We came back pretty well after we were embarrassed by Kansas, 34-7, earlier this he said.

"Coach McCarney will bring us back." Cyclones linebacker Tim Sanders also called Saturday's loss an embarrassment. "You could put paper dummies out there and it would be just about the same thing," Sanders said. ARNOLD INJURED McCarney said Iowa State tailback, kickoff returner and pass receiver Jahi Arnold didn't travel to Lincoln because of an injury. "He got hurt on the one pass he caught against Oklahoma State," McCarney said. "He didn't practice all week.

He tried to go in three practices, but just couldn't do it." Arnold's injury sent Troy Davis back to the kickoff return unit. McCarney said there weren't any serious injuries in Saturday's game. Cornerback Kevin Wilson hurt a foot and nose guard Greg Schoon sprained an ankle. Quarterback Todd Doxzon couldn't play be Iowa State strong safety Matt Straight said his team came up short on character in day's 73-14 loss to No. 1-ranked Nebraska.

"I don't know if anybody gave up. but anytime you get embarrassed the way we did, you know you're not playing with a lot of heart," Straight said. "When you give up 73 points, not everyone is playing his hardest and executing his assignments." Straight said Nebraska was "physically stronger than any team we had played before. They totally dominated us." Like his coach, Dan McCarney, Straight declined to say that Nebraska was piling up the score to protect its No. 1 ranking.

"They were playing football," Straight said. "They weren't going to kneel down in the third quarter." The Cornhuskers led, 66-7, after three quarters. Straight said the outcome was much worse than he anticipated. "We wouldn't have come to the game if we didn't think we could go toe-to-toe against-them." he said. "But our team has come a long way this season." Straight said, however, that he's confident BUBBLE UP Charlie McBnde, Nebraska's defensive coordinator, wants the Huskers to hold their opponents to 285 yards or fewer.

Saturday they did, limiting the Cyclones to 264 yards, 34 yards below the Huskers' average. They used what McBride called the "bubble" defense. Arizona used the bubble, McBride said, the year the Wildcats led the nation in defense. It's a variation of the 4-3, with a linebacker up close to the line, usually over one of the guards. "It's a real hard defense to run against," McBride said.

"You take away all the cut-back stuff. But it's not a good defense against option football, When you get a team that doesn't run a lot of option, you can do it." Without the more nimble Todd Doxzon at quarterback he's out with an ankle injury the Cyclones don't depend on the option as much. "Doxzon's the guy who can run that thing," McBride said. "Of course, he's got that ankle problem, and I think that's hurt them." Ron Maly and Marc Hansen cause of an ankle injury. "He practiced all week, but still was limited," McCarney said.

"We felt Todd Bandhauer was ready to lead the offense." Bandhauer completed 11 of 23 passes for 143 yards with two interceptions. GREEN vs. DAVIS McCarney said Iowa State's Troy Davis, who ran for 121 yards, and Nebraska freshman Ahman Green, who ran for 176, are "two different types of backs." ''Both are very effective and can play for any team in college football," McCarney said. "Green has a very good future in college and the National Football League." Davis, who went into the game as the leading NCAA Division l-A leader in rushing and all-purpose yardage, carried the ball just four times in the first quarter while Iowa State was falling behind, 20-0. Davis needs 262 rushing yards to break the NCAA sophomore single-season record of 1,908 by Michigan State's Lorenzo White in 1985.

He needs 76 to break the Big Eight Conference sophomore record of 1,722 set by Nebraska's Lawrence Phillips last season. Date Opponent Tim Aug. 31 Ohio yy, 3g.2j Sept 9 at Texas Christian 10-27 Sept. 16 Iowa 10-27 Sept. 23 Nevda-UVegat 57lp Oct.
