The show was taped Friday, and it will be shown today. She said the experience was rewarding. "Oprah is amazing," Swanson said. She said Winfrey was friendly, making conversation during commercial breaks and walking with Swanson to the dressing room.

She added that she knew her son had sleepwalked as a boy and many relatives also sleepwalked. She said that if she had known then what she knows now, her son's death could have been prevented.

Since then, Swanson has been learning everything she can about sleep disorders, and she's been teaching others, particularly about sleep disorder warning signs and the dangers of driving while drowsy. By MARTY HELLE Reoixtkh Staft Wkitkk A Burlington woman will appear on today's "Oprah" television show in her quest to educate the public about the dangers of sleeping disorders. Becky Swanson and her husband, Steve, will discuss sleep disorders, which led to the February 1993 death of Becky Swanson's 21 -year-old son, Jarod Allgood, who was killed by a truck while sleepwalking, she said. Originally, the cause of his death was undetermined, then the Linn County medical examiner ruled it a suicide. Finally, a review by the state medical examiner determined that Allgood had been sleepwalking, and the death was ruled accidental. Allgood had told a roommate about a recurring dream of running in a footrace, Swanson said. Allgood had been under a lot of stress and had not been sleeping enough, which experts say can be a acter for them.

"It's clear these guys are having a lot of fun. They feel like they are pulling one over on law enforcement, and the FBI in particular," he said. For example: In at least three of the robberies, the bandits purchased get-away cars, using the names of retired law enforcement officers. They have robbed banks wearing "FBI" imprinted on bandanas. They speak in gibberish to each other during holdups, but seem to understand each other.

They take no more than five minutes to get in and out of the buildings. They prohibit bank tellers from touching the cash. In addition to dressing up like Santa Claus in December, they left an Easter basket containing a pipe bomb behind following a March robbery in West Des Moines. In Missouri last August, they set off a smoke bomb. On another occasion, they dressed as hard-hat wearing construction workers.

Holmquist said he wasn't surprised to learn his name was used in the letter. "My name is out in the public," he said. "But I don't know what to make of it. They have done some things in the robberies that are unusual." Holmquist was quoted in a Register article in July, which mentioned a May 24 armed robbery of the Great avoids life and a discussion with the family and investigators, we decided to have an agreement," she said. Holtkamp said a 1990 study of the child abuse registry kept by the state found that 167 children died of abuse that year.

One in four of the deaths happened because the children were poorly supervised and had, for instance, drowned in a bath tub or were struck by a vehicle. Only one in three of the deaths resulted in criminal charges, he said. And one in five of all suspects actually served jail time. "There seems to be a different standard in prosecuting child murderers," Holtkamp said. "We say, THIS WEEK! The thieves left a black lunch box containing a live bomb to aid their escape. Return Address Frasier said she had no idea why the letter sent to The Register was addressed to her. The men on the envelope's return address were Julio Cano of the Milwaukee Journal and Scott Wiegert, a sergeant with the West Des Moines Police Department. Wiegert was quoted in The Register in connection with the robbery in prison 'Who would want to intentionally kill a So there's a quick deal and we move on." Tough Cases Warren County Attorney Kevin Parker said there are no different standards in prosecuting child murder cases, but prosecutors are usually faced with formidable problems. Often, he said, there are no witnesses and the evidence is circum-.

stantial and difficult to find. Most troubling is that family members frequently don't want to cooperate and withhold evidence because the suspect is a relative or close friend. "Plea bargains are worked out because there's at least an assured jail time," he said. "If it goes to trial there's a chance everything could be lost." Shafer is to be sentenced by Morrison on Jan. 16.

Probe of boy locked on bus continuing By MARK SIEBERT Rkgistkk Stakf Wkitkh Burlington, la. Des Moines County sheriffs deputies Tuesday continued to investigate whether a 6-year-old boy was locked overnight on a school bus. Southeast Iowa authorities frantically searched for the boy Friday night.

He was reported missing when he apparently did not show up at his mother's home in Middletown, just outside Burlington. Before the search was called off because of darkness, an Iowa State Patrol airplane equipped with heat-sensing infared equipment had scanned the area without success. More than 150 people were ready to scour the area at first light Saturday. Then about 6:45 a.m., an unidentified motorist found the boy, Todd Mills, and brought him to the Burlington police station. The boy told authorities he had fallen asleep on the bus ride home and awoke to find the bus locked and parked in the bus lot.

But Des Moines County Sheriff Joel Bonne said there were accusations that the child had been seen at home Friday evening and may not have spent the night aboard the bus. Behne said investigation of those accusations was continuing. "I'm determined we're going to get to the bottom of this mess," he said. The boy's mother, Dorothy Cas-key, has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
