(AP) -Two horsemen complained to the Nebraska Racing Commission on Thursday that Ak-Sar-Ben race track in Omaha is not scheduling enough races for what one of them called "cheap horses." jr Trainer Larry Staroscik, representing the Horsemen's Benevolent ui Association, said his nization "would like to know why, or blo see if there are a few more races to lrib written for the cheap horses that probably will be on the grounds." Staroscik said only three races been scheduled for 12,500 claim-" ing horses during the first two weeks 1 "''of the season. Don Drew, the executive director of the track, said the condition book jj'that spells out eligibility require- merits reflects the types of races that the track would like to run. He acknowledged that Ak-Sar-Ben is seeking better horses and the condition book is a recruiting tool. "We are committed to the best horses on that race track," Drew said. "After that, you write races for the horses that are on the grounds." Owner-breeder Paul Kemling said rr Ak-Sar-Ben should concentrate on Kmaking sure it presents full fields of 3 eight or more horses to bettors.

"The general public has been criticizing racing down there for years because of the short fields," Kemling said. "rj Drew said the public has criticized 1 'the quality of racing, not short fields. we.re tryjng t0 is 0ffer quality and quantity," Drew said. He said full fields in a program full of races for lower claiming-priced horses "will put Ak-Sar-Ben and Ne- braska racing in general out of busl-'Jness faster than anything else I know." im THURSDAY'S RESULTS to 1 (B 1991 New; America Publications Inc.
