B4 THE TAGS NEWS Thursday, Oct. 2,1997 San Cristobal ranch denies catering to Communists Beginning last The Tbos News starting reprinting various old articles, exactly as they appeared in the newspaper 10 to 50 years ago, in an effort to remember our past, laugh at our foibles and learn from our history. It will give us a chance to see how far we've come and at the same time to see how little things have changed. Whenever possible, well update the situation or explain the relevance to life in Taos today. We hope you'll enjoy reading about your predecessors as much as we enjoy digging up the memories.

San Cristobal Ranch Owners Deny Charges (El Crepusculo, 'Feb. 21, 1952) Charges made in Washington last Thursday that the San Cristobal ranch allegedly "catered primarily to Communists" have been denied by Craig and Jenny Vincent in a signed statement released to El Creptisculo and the Associated Press. The Vincents, who operate the dude ranch, we're on vacation in California and Mexico at the Harvey M. Matusow testified before the House un-American Activities Committee in Washington on February 7th. The statement was prepared by the ranch operators after their return to Taos last weekend and included the following: "The San Cristobal Valley Ranch welcomes guests from all countries, and of all races and creeds.

Our friends, neighbors, concerns with whom we do business, know this. We advertise it. We believe this is democracy. We believe it is what America stands for. "Matusow's unfounded statement that we cater primarily to communists comes from the fact that he knows we believe in social equality of all races.

He saw this belief in action at the ranch during his week's stay in the summer of 1950. He observed guests and members of the staff, both of which included Negroes, participating with full equality in social activities, Such equality to the FBI and the House 5 Committee is communistic. To us, it is a full expression of democracy. "Matusow termed as 'odd' the fact that we take guests to Frijoles Canyon to see the historic remains of Indian Cliff Dwellings, just as we take them to other places of interest, so that they may learn about the area, its people and their culture, past and present. By failing to state that these ruins are a part of the Bandolier National Monument, and by stating that they are located near the Los Alamos Atomic Energy project, (he) made the ugly insinuation that we have some devilish interest in the atomic installation.

"The truth is we are interested in Atomic Energy. We want the atomic bomb outlawed by all nations. We want atomic energy used in every peacetime way that scientists can devise to lighten the work, and improve the health and welfare of all people. "This attempt to assassinate our character and ruin our business because of our democratic beliefs is not unimportant. But what is more important is the fact that only through a reign of fear can monopoly corporations, their military and political representatives continue to get vast expenditures for war, fabulous profits and the graft that goes with them.

The FBI and House Committee are engaged in a monstrous unconstitutional effort to silence the voice of any American who, like ourselves, speaks out for Peace, and for the economic, social and political equality of all people, regardless of their color, their religious or political beliefs, their race, or the land of their birth. "It no secret that we believe and say these things. Transitions "We think that the preservation of our Country and its Constitution is at stake, its democratic institutions and we intend to speak up to help stop these un-American activities and to help put our country back on the road to full freedom and democracy." Signed Craig and Jenny Vincent Note: The Vincents, well-known for their hospitality, also made contributions to preservation of local history. The couple brought school children from other parts of the country to learn how to make adobe bricks, and they helped start a school in San Cristobal in the 1940s. Jenny Vincent taught Spanish to elementary school children in a day and time when the language was not encouraged in public schools.

An accomplished classical musician, she learned the traditional music of northern New Mexico, taught the music to school children and played with local bands, most notably Los Alegres de Taos (with the late Pablo Trujillo and Julia Jaramillo) for a quarter century.
