wwvm a 'j tray "gyp" a tM'rynyrcnyj-mp. y'fv'yvyW jyy11 Friday, October 12,1990 THE DES MOINES REGISTER 7M Keegan not out of Iraq Former Des Moines resident Charles Keegan was not on board a plane carrying hostages out of Iraq on Thursday, but family members said they remain hopeful he will be released soon. Keegan, 57, who has an inactive thyroid gland and is in need of medication three times a day to treat the condition, was employed by a Kuwaiti investment company when he was arrested last month in Kuwait City and taken hostage by the Iraqi government. Thomas Van Baale, Keegan's son-in-law, said Thursday, "The State Department called about 11:20 a.m. and confirmed that Chuck was not on the flight that arrived in London." He said the family, including Keegan's daughters, Peg Keegan and Cathi Van Baale, and his son, Steve Keegan, are disappointed but have not given up hope that he will be released.

"The Iraqi government said previously that no more hostages would be released and then there was this plane," said Van Baale. "So maybe there will be more. I still have a gut feeling he is going to get out. The Iraqi ambassador said that if he was really sick he would be released. And we gave him documentation proving that." Cathi and Thomas Van Baale met with Iraqi Ambassador Mohamed Al-Mashet and Iowa Senators Tom Harkin and Charles Grassley earlier this month in Washington, D.C., in an attempt to gain Keegan's release.
