By LUKE MEREDITH Associated Press The fans lined up three hours before kickoff, awaiting their chance to see America's version of football played for the first time in Africa. The locals in Arusha, Tanzania, weren't quite sure what, when or who to cheer for during the game between the Drake Bulldogs and an all-star team from Mexico.

"It truly was a magical day," Drake coach Chris Creighton said by phone from Tanzania. "I think everybody had the sense that we were part of something way bigger than ourselves, just bigger than a football game. It was emotional, kind of the realization of something very special to all of us." The trip grew out of a vision by Creighton and took more than a year of planning by Global Football, a company that's been taking U.S.

The exhibition is part of a two-week trip organized by Drake that includes include youth clinics, a safari, an orphanage project and a five-day climb to the sum- Creighton Ens mit of the Kilimanjaro. Officials had hoped to fill the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium, which normally hosts soccer. But Creighton said tight security measures held up lines of fans and kept the stadium rather empty at kickoff. However, the seats were quickly filled and the game turned out to be entertaining even for those who didn't know what they were watching.

It also proved that turnovers will kill drives from Tijuana to Tanzania. Jose Reyes gave CONADEIP its first and only lead in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run that put the Mexican team ahead 7-3. Drake quarterback Nick Ens making his college debut in Africa answered with a crucial first-down toss to Joey Orlando and found Orlando with an 11 -yard touchdown that gave the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead. CONADEIP quickly drove to Drake's 2. But the Bulldogs defense raised its arms to pump up the crowd just like they'd do back at Drake Stadium.

Bulldogs linebacker Tyler Moorehead said that got the fans as fired up as they'd been all day. CONADEIP followed with its second botched field goal snap of the day to help Drake stay ahead. The Mexican all-stars fumbled once more, and. Patrick Cashmore's touchdown run late in the fourth quarter sealed a Drake win. Reyes was the star of the day, rushing for 124 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

"Everybody has a dream. Everybody has a vision. But very few or seldom are reached," Creighton said. "I felt as though we were part of history." "I think what happened last year, it's behind (us)," Gagne said.

"Things are different now. I'm playing with a different team. Boston is a different team. Right now it's just going out there and trying to be the difference in the game." Teddy Purcell scored twice in the second period when the Lightning tied it at 3-3. Tampa Bay also got a goal from Sean Bergen-heim, who leads the NHL with nine playoff goals after scoring 14 times during the regular season.

Martin St. Louis sealed the win in the final minute with an empty-net goal. Gagne gave the Lightning a 4-3 lead when he beat Tim Thomas from the right circle 6:54 into the third period after Tampa Bay left wing Ryan Malone stole the puck near the blue line. The Lightning outshot the Bruins 9-1 through the first seven minutes of the period after scoring three unanswered goals in the second. "We got outworked," Thomas said.

By RANDY PETERSON randypetersondmreg.com Drama broke out in the ninth inning at Principal Park Friday night. The bottom line says the Iowa Cubs rallied to defeat Tucson 11-10 before an announced crowd of 6,047, but how it was accomplished that was something else. "You never give up in this game," said Iowa catcher Steve Clevenger, whose single off the glove of shortstop Logan Forsythe allowed pinch-runner Matt Camp to score to cap a three-run final Cubs at-bat. Tyler Colvin, recently sent to Iowa from the Chicago Cubs, started the eventful inning with a double, and two outs later he scored on a single by Bobby Scales. Did we say drama? Scott Moore hit a ball so high against the fence in left-center field that he and manager Bill Dancy thought it was a home run.

The ball bounced off the top of the fence and onto the field as Moore legged out a triple. He argued that the ball hit a video-replay camera mounted above and beyond the fence, but the umpires, after conferring, ruled differently and ejected Moore. "When I see him in the clubhouse, I'm going to tell him thank for the opportunity," Clevenger said after the Cubs won a game in which they trailed 10-4 in the fifth inning. The walk-off hit clinched a banner four-hit, three-RBI night for Clevenger that included a home run, a double and another single. "It's about waiting on the right pitch to hit," said Clevenger, recently promoted from double-A Tennessee.

"I'm seeing the ball pretty good right now." Mike Smith has joined Simon Gagne in hurting the Boston Bruins during the postseason. Smith was perfect in relief of goalie Dwayne Roloson, and Gagne snapped a tie in the third period for the Tampa Bay Lightning, who erased an early three-goal deficit and evened the Eastern Conference finals with a 5-3 win in Game 4 over the Bruins on Saturday.

Roloson was pulled in the first period after he allowed three goals on nine shots. Smith came on and made 21 saves as the Lightning avoided dropping into, a big hole against the surging Bruins. Boston will host Game 5 on Monday. "There's no time to think," Smith said. "It's just one of those things where we got behind the 8-ball there in the first.

That's why I'm on the bench, to come in and kind of settle the team down and give them a little bit of a momentum. It ended up working out." Dwyane Wade's right arm had a nasty gash that left him unwilling to shoot the ball for Miami down the stretch. Omer Asik needed stitches around his chin, not to mention a Chicago jersey that wasn't covered in his own blood. That was Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

In Game 3, both sides expect more of the same. "We haven't been able to ease into anything this year," Heat forward LeBron James said. Don't look for that to change, either. With a 2-1 series lead at stake, the Bulls and Heat meet today in Miami, ending a 94-hour hiatus in the physical matchup. "This is going to be a crazy game, where I think they're going to have a lot of confidence," said Rose, the NBA's most valuable player. "Some way, somehow, we've just got to come up with this win no matter how we get it." tor Mike Dick said he doesn't expect any of the affected state meets and tournaments to require additional days of competition because of schedule changes.

Criticisms of the proposal included lesser talent in each class at state tournaments, increased school transportation costs for the postseason and the difficulty of scheduling more teams at state, Dick said. "It's workable, but we'll have some long days," Dick said.
