PHELPS Pes Moines 1 Arlene G. HAROLD T. STRAS8URG Des Moines Harold Strasburg, age 78, died Thursday, May 27, 2010 after a long illness. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 12 from 1 to 3 p.m.. at Cald-well-Raddatz Funeral Home.

S201 Hickman Road, L'rbandale. He was born in Des Moines. IA on October 7, 1931 to Evelyn and Theodore Strasburg and was a lifelong resident. Harold graduated from East High School and served in the Navy during the Korean conflict. Harold retired from the Polk County Sheriffs Office in nHH.

One of his passions was entertaining people with his trombone for 60 years. His passion for music and entertaining others began in the early 1950s playing in ballrooms across Iowa and the midwest. He was part of many orchestras and bands throughout his entire life. He played with Jack Cole, Keith and Carl Killinger, Don Hoy, Ralph Zarnow, Les Elgart. Teddy Phillips.

Bob Smith, John Morgan, Des Moines Municipal Band. Maple Street Jazz Band, productions at KRNT Theater and the Civic Center, community bands. Iowa Military Veterans Band and many others. Everyone who knew him will remember his smile and his jokes. Survivors include part-ner, Esther Blevins: ex-wife.

Ruth Strasburg: daughter. Susan Strasburg both of Denver. CO: son. Steve Donaldson of dimming, IA; grandchildren, Megan and Billy Shatz of Denver; brother, Richard (Gwen) Strasburg of Minneapolis, MX; extended family and friends. He will be cremated and the ashes given to his daughter.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell First Friends Church or to Quaker Heights in Eldora, Iowa Duke was born May 8, 1924. in Grinnell. the son of Fred Hayse and Emma Mae Lincoln McCurry.

He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1941 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. On July 26, 1942. he was united in marriage to Mary' "Lee" Thompson in Kirks-ville. Missouri.

The couple lived in Grinnell where he attended Grinnell College and was employed with several businesses in the area. He began his career with GTE in 195S and was employed in several communities in Iowa. Nebraska, and Missouri specializing in customer senices. At the time of his retirement in 19S7 he was vice-president of the Missouri Telephone Association and then later moved to Grinnell. Survivors include his wife of Grinnell; two children.

Kenneth L. McCurry and Cynthia Lee Rose of Grinnell: two grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Rose of Portland. Oregon and Susan Marie Rose of Marion; one great-grandchild. Nathaniel Rose of Portland; and one brother, Jerrv McCurrv of Knoxville. DARWIN HUFFAKER Mingo Darwin Huffaker, 76, passed from this life on Monday, May 24, 2010 at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada Senices will be June 2, 2010 at 11 a.m.

at Ashton Chapel, rural Mingo. Family will receive friends and relatives from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the church senice. Darwin was bom March 24. 19:34 in LeClaire, L.

son of Ruby and Dale Huffaker. Spent most of his life working as a mechanic for several different businesses and out of his own garage until he retired. He is survived by second wife, Phyllis Hapes Huffaker. Long Term Care, Nevada; two sons, Gary (Donna) Huffaker, Collins and Barry (Kyla) Huffaker. She was born on January 31. 1929 to Veda and Leo John Schaffer. Ther-esia spent her entire life in Des Moines, where she devoted her life to her husband and raising, loving, and tending to her five children and many grandchildren. Theresia ery'oyed playing cards, loved board games, puzzles, bingo, reading novels, but most of all. adored spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and a sister. Theresia will be greatly-missed by the many whose lives she touched and especially by the family in whom her spirit will live on: her loving husband of 62 years, Lloyd Larsen; her three daughters, Lonnie (Bob) Clark, Donna (Dennis) Pittman. and Laurette Forney; her two sons. John Larsen and Michael (Yield) Larsen; ten grandchildren. 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.

A memorial service in her honor will be held on Wednesday. June 2. 2010 at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 2600 E. Euclid.

May 27, 2010 at The Village at Legacy- SAT. Point in Waukee of complications from Alzheimer's. Graveside senices will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 3 at Jordan Cemetery'. West Des Moines. Mary Elizabeth Daly was born April 19, 1934 in Nor-walk, the daughter of Lam-ont and Violet Patten.

She graduated from Norwalk High School and on April 24, 1955 was united in marriage to Robert Daly of West Des Moines, where she had lived most of her life. Mary' worked at Fawn Engineering for many years and retired from the law office of Steve Kaiser in Des Moines. She enjoyed bowling, watching sports, traveling with her sister and her annual reunion with her cousins. Her greatest joy in life were her two granddaughters. Mary is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Stephen) Hatcher; two granddaughters, Stacy (Jamie) Mauk and Kelsey Hatcher all of West Des Moines; sister, Marilyn Per-reira of Richmond, CA; three brothers, Oliver (Esther) Patten and Jack (JoAnn) Patten all of Des Moines and Jerry (Shirley) Patten of Demorest, GA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

She as preceded in death by her husband Robert. Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2010 at Westover Funeral Home. M-He Hay Funeral Home and and may Esther Gersib. 96, of Des Moines, died on May 26, 2010 at Wesley Acres. She was born c55 in Russell, Kansas on January 23, 1914. She was a Cashier at Drake University and then a Bookkeeper for Grandview University before joining her husband as Bookkeeper for The Stamp Corner retiring in 1992. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Viewing and Visitation will be on Monday, May 31. 2010 at Hamilton's Funeral Home on Lyon Street from 4 to 6 p.m. Senices will be on Tuesday, June 1. 2010 at 11:30 at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Family will receive friends from 10 until service time with lunch to follow.

Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines following the luncheon. Esther was preceded in death by her husband. George P. Gersib and is survived by her daughter. Janet Paul) Kramme; her son, John Gersib: her two sisters.

PATRICIA K. SCHULENBURG Des Moines Patricia K. Schulenburg died of pancreatic cancer May 12. 2 0 10 at Kavanagh House Hos pice in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born November 17, 1952 in Cherokee.

Iowa to Clifford and Ruby Weth- erell. She married Richard Schulenburg in 1973 and moved to Des Moines in 1976. She worked in the mental health industry' for all of her adult life. Originally Northwest Hospital, then Charter Hospital, and finally Mercy Franklin Center, Pat had remained a fixture at the same location for over 30 years, through all its ownership iterations. She also spent many years as an avid crafter.

She sold her wares in Des Moines and northwest Iowa with her sister Delores under the name "The Button She is survived by her husband. Richard Schulenburg of Des Moines; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Elizabeth Schulenburg of Des Moines; sis-ter and brother-in-law, Delores and DarreH Swan-son of Spirit Lake: sister. Peg Wetherell of Spencer; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends she considered to be family. She will also be survived by twin grandchildren, who are to be bom in October. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held June 6 at 2 p.m.

Arlene was born Beverly Jean Smith and was taken from the Orphan Train by the Child Rescue Home in August 1921. She was given the birth date of July 4, based on her age when taken from the train. She was chosen by her sister, Zelda as a baby and formally adopted at the age of five by their parents, Berkey and Eva (Jasper) Shaffer who fanned near Elkhart. Her name was changed Arlene Grace Shaffer and sie joined the Church of tie Brethern at an early She graduated from Elkhart consolidated in 1939. Arlene marred James Phelps November 1, 1941.

She worked at the ordi-rance plant during WWII aid in the office at Sears in tie years following the war. She was a bank officer at Irenton Bank and was a at Barton Solents for 15 years. She vorked at Block for years. Arlene served on the loard of Directors at Spur-jseon Manor when they Iroke ground for an Alzheimer's unit. She vorked at the Iowa State lair in the Food Depart-nent for 23 years.

She is most remembered br her ability at the organ md her willingness to play it retirement and nursing lomes, churches, and for en years at the Iowa tlethodist Hospital Chapel. She was a charter member )f the Des Moines Organ Tlub and enjoyed ritchett's organ classes and extravaganzas. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, James Phelps; her parents; her adopted siblings, Juniata "June" Schneider, Zelda Childs, James Shaffer and his wife Julia. Her survivors include sisters-in-law, Erma Allen now living in Florida and Joy Phelps of Washington State and her brother- inlaw, Leonard Phelps of L'rbandale. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Arlene's nephew and niece, Gary and Janice Ash, would like to thank Dr. Michael Blaess and the staff at Mercy East Village for the care and compassion given to Arlene. They would also like to thank Dr. Douglas Casady, Dr. Steven Johnston and the staff at Wolfe Eye Clinic for the eye care given to Arlene that saved her sight.

The family members will receive friends on Wednesday night, June 2, 2010 at Hamilton's near Highland Memory' Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Funeral services will be held Thursday. June 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hamilton's Funeral Home to defray funeral expenses.

FL where they walked the beach collecting shells to make shell wreaths and watching sunsets.

LaVern was a member of West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Cub Masters 242. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 499 and a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is sunived by his wife of 59 years, Helen; sons. Kevin of Pensacola.

INGERSOLL Woodward Lloyd Junior Ingersoll. S3, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 of natural causes at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial with military honors will follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.

Iowa Lloyd was born the son of Albert Lloyd and Belva Mae (Teed) Ingersoll on March 30. 1927 in Mingo. Iowa. He was very honored and proud to sen as a CPL in the United States Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Lloyd shared many stories with his four daughters.

He was a contract painter by trade and due to health issues, retired in 19S3. Lloyd was a member of the Madrid V.F.W Post 5000. During his later years, Lloyd loved visiting with his daughters and grandchildren, playing with his great-grandchildren and spending time with his dog. He also enjoyed woodworking He is sun ived and lovingly remembered by his daughters, Jeannie (Dennis) Johnson of Boone, Carla (Gary) Lee of Tucson, AZ. Jackie (Bill) See-nuui of Woodward and Jodi (Randy) Bertrand of Woodward: six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers.

1952 in Pella. Iowa. He was a retired plumber and member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 33. Wally was a Boy Scout Volunteer and a very-art ive member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church. He enjoyed spending time with family and attending his grandchildren's activities.
