The Match Race Competitors: Pedo Ramsey -1991 Puppy Stakes winner A Dusty Didit -1991 PBKC Track Champ Felder cf Thompson 2b METSfrom 1C The Pirates loaded the bases off of Viola on a single and two walks in the second inning, but center fielder Vince Coleman made a diving catch of Gary Redus' two-out line drive to save the Mets.

"The defense saved me tonight," Viola said. "The vlays we made settled me down. It was one of the best defensive games I've ever had behind me." Smith, 3-1 against the Mets last year with a 0.97 ERA in 37 innings, pitched six innings and gave up eight hits. Bob Kipper replaced Smith (2-1) to start the seventh and the Mets scored a run with the help of Coleman's speed. Coleman singled with one out, stole second on a pitchout and stole third.

After Gregg Jefferies struck out, Dave Magadan singled to make it 2-0. Coleman stole three bases in the game to tie a club record. Coleman increased his lifetime total to 60 steals, moving into 12th place on the career list ahead of Davey Lopes. 4 12 0 3 3 2 2 3 110 2 10 0 3 114 0 0 0 0 ST.
