"The defense saved me tonight," Viola said. "The vlays we made settled me down. It was one of the best defensive games I've ever had behind me." Smith, 3-1 against the Mets last year with a 0.97 ERA in 37 innings, pitched six innings and gave up eight hits. Bob Kipper replaced Smith (2-1) to start the seventh and the Mets scored a run with the help of Coleman's speed. Coleman singled with one out, stole second on a pitchout and stole third. After Gregg Jefferies struck out, Dave Magadan singled to make it 2-0. Coleman stole three bases in the game to tie a club record. Coleman increased his lifetime total to 60 steals, moving into 12th place on the career list ahead of Davey Lopes. 4 12 0 3 3 2 2 3 110 2 10 0 3 114 0 0 0 0 ST.
