LUCIE Two guys who had mediocre years in the California League last season aren't letting the Florida State League's reputation as a pitchers' league get the best of them. Chris Morrow went 3-for-4 with a triple, drove in a run and scored twice, and John Deutsch drove in two runs and hit a tie-breaking, game-winning home run in the eighth inning Tuesday night, leading the Vero Beach Dodgers (8-4) to a 5-4 victory over the St. Lucie Mets (7-6) in front of 473 at Thomas J. White Stadium.

"He's hot right now," Vero Beach manager Jerry Royster said of Morrow, who batted .240 at Ba-kersfield last season but raised his average to .500 and his slugging percentage to .750 with hits in his first three at-bats Tuesday night. "He struggled last year but he made some adjustments and everything seemed to happen for him. It's a treat to see him do that." Deutsch, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound first baseman, batted .255 at Ba-kersfield. Tuesday's home run was his third in 12 games. "He can do that," said Royster, who lives in West Palm Beach.

"When you're that big and you're aggressive, you can do that." The Dodgers scored two unearned runs off Pete Walker (1-2) in the top of the first on a walk to Matt Howard, Morrow's single, two St. Lucie errors and Deutsch's infield out. They stretched their lead to 4-1 in the third on Howard's single, Morrow's triple and Adam Brown's groundout. "Walker pitched an outstanding ballgame," Mets manager John Ta-margo said. "He had good command, good location and it seemed like he picked up velocity late in the game.

He made some great pitches. "He made the pitch he wanted to (to Deutsch), kept it away from him, but the guy got his arms extended and hit it out." Vero Beach left-hander Michael Mimbs held the Mets (7-6) to two hits and one run in six innings. He struck out seven but was a victim of his own wildness, walking Brian Davis, James Harris and Derek Henderson in succession after giving up a leadoff single to Mark Thomas in the second. "He threw a lot of pitches," Royster said. "He was in trouble from the beginning." Reliever Dave Baumann couldn't get anybody out, giving up singles to Davis and Harris and an RBI double to Henderson before being replaced by Mike Brady in the seventh.

With one out, Tim Howard singled, scoring Harris, and Brook Fordyce grounded out, tying the score. Winner Ray Calhoun (2-0) pitched 2 scoreless innings for the Dodgers. "That was Baumann's first time out," Royster said. "He's been on the disabled list with a sore elbow. We just wanted him to work things out; that's what this league is all about.

I thought he did fine." Notes The Mets play the Dodgers at 7 tonight at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach. Joe Vitko (1-0, 0.75 ERA) will pitch for St. Lucie Vero Beacti 5, St. Lucie 4 Bolk BouctrOf Umpires Home, Cousins; First. Roe; Second, Reed; Third, Bnnkman.
