In writing this picture book the students will practice their skills in punctuation, capital letter usage and keeping to the point. Writing paragraphs and combining sentences will also practiced. Students are focusing on strategies to help them become better readers. Some of those strategies are comprehension, making generalizations, inferring, drawing conclusions and sequencing events.

One hundred days of school equals 100 cans. Monday marked the 100th day and students helped celebrate. Each classroom brought 100 cans of food. Students used the cans to sort, graph, estimate and explore volumes before helping they learned after research and study. Students each picked one famous lowan to research and shared three interesting facts.

With this information, students listed what they already knew about the exhibits at the Iowa Hall of Pride. The students also listed questions they had about famous lowans. On Feb. 5 students visited the Iowa Hall of Pride. The whole school earned the field trip for being respectful, responsible and caring citizens.

After the trip, Voll's students revisited their KWL chart and shared what they had learned about famous lowans. Walnut Street Second- and third-grade students are beginning to learn about famous African Americans to celebrate Black History Month. Students in Jump Rope for Heart to raise money for the American Heart Association. The event will kick off with an assembly and a jump rope performance by the office staff. Faculty and staff today will participate in Wear Red Day to raise the awareness of women's heart disease.

Free blood pressure checks will be offered to the faculty courtesy of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Katie Voll's class worked hard on a unit called Iowa Pride. With the assistance of staff and the use of the computer lab, students researched famous lowans. As a class, they completed a KWL chart on the Iowa Hall of Pride. The KWL method includes making lists of what students already know, what they want to learn, and what to pack them into boxes.

Middle school students delivered the donated cans to the food pantry. Upper elementary students are learning about Shakespeare and reading his plays. Downtown In January and February the 5-, 6- and 7-year-olds studied about restaurants and shoes. Students had a variety of field experiences. They visited restaurants to learn how these businesses operate.

A local pastry chef came in and shared her knowledge and taught the students about the tools used in restaurants. One learning group visited RCC Western Store at Valley West Mall to learn about boots.
