ambassador to the United Nations. Music Star: Leslie Scarpino of Clive spent June and July performing with the American Russian Young Artists Orchestra. Scarpino, a trumpet player, spent a week touring Russia and performed in concerts in the United States. Scarpino also is participating this summer in the Norfolk Chamber Music FestivalYale Summer School of Music in Connecticut. She will take part in a two-week contemporary music workshop and a six-week chamber music session that will feature the Tokyo String Quartet.

Scarpino, daughter of Mary Scarpino, is a Dowling High School graduate and plans to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, 111. Neighborhood flowers: The South Park Neighborhood Association dedicated a flower garden Tuesday night at Southeast 14th Street and McKinley Avenue. The flowers came from the Des Moines Botanical Center. Home Depot, 4900 S.E. 14th helped design the flower garden and donated bricks and other materials for the project.

Camp money: The Mid-Iowa Council of Boy Scouts received a $3,100 donation from the Home Loan Bank and its matching gift program. The money will be used at Camp Basketball camp in Boone. The Boy Scouts received the donation in conjunction with the bank's Ruth Griggs Wallace Award. Each year, a bank em ployee demonstrating volunteer service excellence is chosen for the award. Ruth Griggs Wallace worked at the Home Loan Bank for more than 30 years and provided tremendous leadership for the bank's community involvement.

This year's recipient, Steve Davis, embodies her spirit of vol- unteensm. The bank made a do nation to the nonprofit agency Davis chose to honor him. "The bank has made Ruth Griggs Wallace a role model for employee volunteerism just as the Boy Scouts have role models, like Steve, for our youth," said Eh Brewer, Scout executive, Mid-Iowa Council. "As a Boy Scout leader for the last 16 years, Steve has set an example for a large and diverse group of kids. It is touching and rewarding that he has chosen Mid-Iowa Council as the recipient of the bank's donation."
