Teammate Daryl Johnston said players were worried about Lett "and how this will affect him." "It could have very serious repercussions," Johnston said. "He is going to have a difficult time restoring confidence with the public and with the team.

It's a difficult situation." Quarterback Troy Aikman said, "I don't want to be shallow enough to look at it in terms of how it affects us on the football field. I think there's a bigger issue here and one that Leon needs to address. We hope to be able to help him through it." Lett is the second high-profile Cowboy to receive a drug-related suspension this season. All-Pro wide receiver Michael Irvin was suspended for the first five games after pleading no contest to drug charges stemming from an arrest. Five Dallas players Lett, Irvin, Clayton Holmes, Shante Carver and Corey Fleming have been suspended a total of seven times since 1994 for violations of the league's drug policy.

Lett, the Cowboys' leading tackier, will be replaced in the lineup by Tony Casillas. The defending Super Bowl champs (8-5) share first place in the NFC East with Washington and Philadelphia. "The burden will be on the offense like it was on the defense when Irvin was suspended," Johnston said. "We will have to raise our level of play. It's for sure the defense won't be as good without him." Lett, 28, was recently informed that he had violated the policy, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

Lett's appeal of the penalty was denied by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Lett was not available for comment. He canceled a scheduled radid talk-show appearance. Lett has been tested up to 10 times per month since the NFL suspended him last season. According to the NFL's substance policy, a suspended player may not participate with his team in any way during the time he is out.

A player suspended for one year may apply for re-instatement no sooner than 60 days prior to the one-year anniversary date of his suspension. Irving, Texas (AP) Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Leon Lett was suspended a minimum of one year effective immediately by the National Football League on Tuesday for violating the league's drug policy for a second time. Lett was suspended for four games in 1995. At the time, he was informed that any further violation would result in a minimum one-year suspension without pay.

Davis to attend Heisman ceremony By RANDY PETERSON Rkgistkr Stafv Wkitkr For the second year in a row, Iowa State running back Troy Davis will be sitting in the front row at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City at the made-for-television Heisman Trophy ceremony. Only this time, his chance of winning appears to be better than last year, when he finished fifth. Davis, the best football player in Iowa State history, on Tuesday received word he is among five finalists for the award, given annually to the nation's top college player. It isn't known who the other finalists or how many have been invited to the ceremony, which will be carried at 6:30 p.m. Dec.

Also Tuesday, Davis learned he is one of three finalists for the Maxwell Award, another award that goes to the nation's top player. The other finalists were not identified. Davis will join the other Maxwell Award finalists at the ESPN awards ceremony on Dec.

A 6-foot 2-inch walk-on from DuSable High School in Chicago, Moore doesn't even have his name on the back of his Hawkeyes' basketball jersey. But he's no secret to his teammates. "He's the one guy you hate to go against in practice," Ryan Bowen said. Everywhere he goes, Moore needs an introduction.

Tuesday night, he introduced himself to the Drake basketball team. Moore scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Iowa dominated Drake, 79-59, at a sold-out Knapp Center. It was the Hawkeyes' 18th consecutive victory in the series. "This is a walk-on's dream," said Moore, a fourth-year junior who started for the third consecutive game. Moore plays third guard in the Iowa system, a spot usually occupied by all-Big Ten Conference player Jess Settles, who missed his third straight game with a heel injury.

Moore's quickness and athleticism were among the reasons the Bulldogs wilted under Iowa's full-court press. He also contributed greatly to the Hawkeyes' 47-23 advantage on the boards. "Darryl Moore continues to be a real story," Iowa Coach Tom Davis said. Drake Coach Kurt Kanaskie said Monday that Iowa's rebounding strength and his team's lack of the same was one of his big concerns. His other concern was the press.

Both fears came to fruition. "There were times in the first half when we couldn't even get the ball over half court," Drake forward Kevin Bennett said. "It works well, because then our guards can't be double-teamed as easily." Lincoln trailed, 60-54, with 1 minute 37 seconds left, but Valley regained control. "We got into a press a little bit," Lincoln Coach Jerry Schartner said. "They were tired and so were we.

We wanted to find out who was most tired." Lincoln has just three seniors, and one of them, guard Sara Brookhart, sprained an ankle in the second half and didn't return. "I told our players I can't fault our defense," Schartner said. "I thought we played really good defense. I can't fault our offense." Angela Timmons, another senior, scored a game-high 22 points. She had nine in the fourth quarter.

The players combined for 18 points in the first half to help their team improve its record to 3-0. Valley scored the first 12 points of the second quarter, six from Sheriff and Vande Kamp, which helped Valley take a 40-27 halftime lead. "Against a team like Lincoln, you know it's going to be a game of runs, and the team that gets the longest one might win the game, Valley Coach Jay Prescott said.

Valley's strength is its senior guards. Sally Spooner, a Des Moines Sunday Register first-team all-stater last season, scored 19 points. Katie Sandre had 18 and Lindsey Horner eight.
